Evolver Detroit Spore
Please join us on Wednesday June 17th, in Shed 5 of Detroit's historic Eastern Market for our first Evolver Spore as we screen the critically acclaimed documentary The Greening of Southie followed by an Open Space discussion.
Set on the storied streets of South Boston, The Greening of Southie is a feature documentary about Boston’s first residential green building, and the men and women who set out to construct it. From wheatboard cabinetry to recycled steel, bamboo flooring to dual-flush toilets, The Macallen Building is something different––a leader in the emerging field of environmentally friendly design. But green building has its challenges, and the jobsite has its skeptics. And when things start to go wrong, a young developer has to keep the project from unraveling.
The film raises important questions surrounding the "Green Collar" meme. How will the American working class fair in such an economy? What is the true meaning of sustainability? How can we engage in conversations about green futures across cultural and class lines? What exactly is green building and is this the best way to move forward? How does gentrification, "green" or otherwise, affect our community? What are this film's implications for the city of Detroit?
Detroit's Evolver Spores will work in collaboration with Detroit Evolution Laboratory, Eastern Market Corporation, and Great Lakes Bioneers Detroit as part of the Detroit Abides monthly film/discussion series.
