The Rainmaker: Bridging Heaven and Earth for Inner and Outer Change
Once when there was a drought in a rural village in China, the villagers called for the Rainmaker. When he arrived, the villagers were curious about how the Rainmaker was going to bring the rain. In response, the Rainmaker asked for a hut to be alone for 3 days. Three days later, as the Rainmaker emerged from his hut, a great waterfall poured from the skies. The villagers were amazed and asked how he did it. The Rainmaker replied, "I have done nothing". Astounded at this explanation, the villagers said, "How can that be? Three days after you came, the rain started."
The Rainmaker explained, "When I arrived, the first thing I saw was that everything in your village was out of harmony with heaven. So I spent three days putting myself into harmony with the Divine. Now that I am in the Tao, because the rain was missing, now it rains.”
When we open the heart and allow the Tao to pour through us, we can find harmony with heaven. We can relieve our suffering and have great effect on our inner and outer lives. In this course, the rain is a symbol for Creation – what bridges heaven and earth, heart and mind, inner and outer worlds.
