What is the origin and purpose of crop circles? Art by some very talented people? Messages from extraterrestrials? Physical manifestations from our collective unconscious?

It almost seems to me that someone is playing tricks on us. Problem is, so many people watch are unaffected in their daily lives to take notice. From what I've read, yes, there are crop circles created by men. However, there exists a clear distinction between such crop circles and others who's characteristics can hardly be seen as creations of the same group of men. From what I've gathered, these superior circles are just that and those who study crop circles understand the significance of these differences in quality. It fascinates me and I think an explanation will always fall short coming from another one of us.

Certainly, a few individuals have and continue to make crop formations for whatever reason. This is very unfortunate since it creates an easy, comfortable excuse for people to hop on the skeptical bandwagon without looking into the matter themselves. (Those who are unqualified to judge should refrain from comment). Anyone who puts in a simple effort to dig deeper quickly realizes that there is much more to the story than a simple human hoax. (An analogy is this: Just because certain individuals occasionaly create counterfeit money should not result in everyone believing that all money is counterfeit). Circle reasearchers can distinguish genuine formations by studying the actual crop in the formation, seed germination characteristics, and analyzing soil chemistry. Genuine crop formations typically display bent / elongated plant nodes both inside and outside the formations, exit holes where super-heated water vapour has exploded through the plant issue, significant seed germination / growth anomalies, microscopic molten lead spheres in the soil, and intensely geometric designs that would require computer generated fractal equations and field-guidelines in order to construct on the ground. As well, genuine formations occur in very short time intervals and in adverse weather conditions, often near public areas such as busy highways or farms.
I strongly recommend for anyone interested in crop circles to pick up one of many books in their local library or rent a documentary on the subject to delve into the matter further. (The truth is out there).

Q. What is the origin and purpose of crop circles?
A. This is a question I that has at least two answers, based on the next questions and answers.
Q. Art by some very talented people?
A. Manmade circles can be pretty flamboyant as well as quite enchanting. I feel some of it is created for simple foolery, and some is designed and placed on the field in the spirit of art.
Q. Messages from extraterrestrials?
A. Indeed. I get the sense that an off-planet intelligence is contacting some of us mind-to-mind. Many of us are actually engaging in a mutual correspondence with something that remains elusive, yet which I feel enables contact and to which we respond in kind. This is, to me, a most revolutionary concept - and concept it shall remain, for many of our planet's population. I still can't answer part two of question one though (i.e., what is the purpose of crop circles?).
Q. Physical manifestations from our collective unconscious?
A. I feel that much crop art is tapping into the collective consciousness - maybe not so much the unconscious. The 2009 season brought a lot of dramatic, yet somehow expected designs. The crop circles from other intelligence reflect a more enigmatic - yet deeply purposeful - language.
