Alright. I really, really want to go to Burning Man this year. I am putting in the days off at work (if i still work come that time) and gathering supplies for the trip, but I have one small problem that I hope yall can help me with. I don't want to go alone! My friends either don't want to go or think that going is impossible for them. Maybe we can plan an Evolver Atlanta trip out there, share resources for the week and do some type of Evolver Atlanta project on the playa.
From the site:
What Is Burning Man?
Once a year, tens of thousands of participants gather to create Black Rock City in Nevada's Black Rock Desert, dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. They depart one week later, having left no trace whatsoever. Learn more about this incredible experience, and read our mission statement and the Ten Principles.
2009 Art Theme: "Evolution"
Nature never made a plan, nor does it seem to copy very well. No living thing is ever quite the same as others of its kind. Charles Darwin called this Natural Variation. There is a kind of subtle chaos, a supple element of chance and change, residing at the core of living things. Our theme this year prompts three related questions: What are we as human beings, where have we come from, and how may we adapt to meet an ever-changing world?
Here is a good video to see some of burning man from last year. I can't embed on discussion post.

BM this year...?
Hi Stiffsock,
I went the last 2 years, and had a blast! Not sure that I am going to make it this go round, but I can certainly help you figure out the logistics of a first-time trip out to Black Rock City. Hit me up and I'll give you some tips if you like.
As for an Atlanta Evolver-faction out there... seems like a great idea! Maybe bring it up among the folks at the Spore event on Wednesday and see if you can rally some interest!
Cheers,
ST
Burning Man..good party but...
I've been involved in the Burn scene here in the Southeast Region, and here's what I'd like to say...
If you want to go to Burning Man because it's a good party, by all means go and have a great time.
If you believe any of the stuff about how it's non-commercial or believe that what's happening at Burning Man is in any way representative of some sort of cultural evolution or paradigm shift, PLEASE do your homework, okay?
I recommend you start with the article about Burning Man that can be found online, done by Business 2.0 in 2007...
http://money.cnn.com/magazines/business2/business2_archive/2007/07/01/10...
..where they explain what an awesome trade show Burning Man for tech folks, is and how it's this amazing business model, since they can get all these folks to believe that they have some sort of involvement in the festival and will give things and work for free.
Additionally their arts grant nonprofit, Black Rock Arts Foundation, has a horrible track record and only spends (roughly) 20-something percent of their donations on actual arts, as compared to an average of sixty-something percent for most other arts foundations.
Burning Man is trying to create nothing, is representative of nothing, and takes responsibility for nothing other than their profits.
It's a good party if you want to party with a bunch of folks in a very hostile environment, all trying to outdo each other in a conspicuously consumptive way. Gifting at Burning Man, brought to you by WalMart, sigh...
I've just known so many people who get sucked in with the hype...and the Burning Man Faithful attendees will not tolerate any conversation about the reality, so you won't hear it from them...
..and again it's not that I have a problem with it, it's just that I don't want you to think that just because they're advertising something that you think you want, that it's any more really satisfying than the fast food at McDonald's is, or any less a commercial endeavor.
Please don't take my word for it, do a bit of research on the matter, they don't deny what they're about, they just advertise it differently.
XXXOOO,
Me

Also there are great yahoo discussion groups for Transformus and Alchemy that you might want to join...
and lastly there is a Burner Atlanta Meet and Greet happening this very weekend, I believe the info on that will be available on the DSB site. It's a Luau theme this weekend...

Actually..
..seems the address for that Meet and Greet isn't publicly posted, but if anyone wants to know hit me up in a private message or at my email, merritt137@yahoo.com I'll send it to you. It's not a private gathering, Meet and Greets are for, uh, meeting and greeting.
It's not really starting until Saturday, it's on private land so camping is available, a great chance to meet Burners in your area and hang out. Sure to be some fire spinning and drinkin' out the bottle LOL...
XXXOOO,
Me
