Figured that I'd start a thread about lucid dreaming consciousness. I first heard of the concept in Carlos Casteneda's novels. Share your experiences....

Dance Troupe

Last night I had a very lucid dream in which I "realized" that I was in fact dreaming. I played around with the idea, I walked around - amazed at the fact that I could control what I was doing. I found myself at what seemed like a house party. We were celebrating Halloween - or at least everyone was dressed in Halloween costumes - skeletons, witches, monsters. Then the party quieted for a performance. A dance troupe came into the center of the room. Music began and the dancers began what I can only describe as a mix of "Thriller" and ballet. As the performance went on dancers would "disappear", no one else seemed to notice. Then I saw one of the dancers start to "melt" into a couch. She saw me see this and before see completely morphed, she put her finger to her lips - as to say not to expose their secret. I got the impression that this was all apart of the show. Soon all the dancers were gone. Everyone in the party just walked away. The dancers would reappear later in the night, although I wasn't there to see it, my alarm went off and I woke up.

Dreaming

To be able to sustain the awareness of knowing you are awake in your dream is what is interesting. I find that when this occurs to me, I have to try very hard not to get too excited because this will cause me to "wake up from the dream". I try to stay calm, but what other tricks are there to stay awake in dreaming?

me too

I have yet to have a very prolonged lucid experience. But personally I try to maintain focus on one thing and that tends to keep me lucid for a while before I eventually wake. For example when i become lucid I may just stare forward so as not to disrupt my state and then figure what I want to do as fast as possible then go do it.

Lucid dreams

I have had a lot of lucid dreams. As soon as I "realize" I am dreaming I get very excited and start to fly or float right away. I started interacting with the other dream characters after I read of other people talking and getting information from them. I have a couple of experiences with that:

In one dream I was in this huge underground place, looked like a cave with so many many people there all walking around, like they were at a shopping mall or something. As soon as I became lucid I grabbed the first person I was the closest to who was an older man, and said to him " Where am I?"

He responded " Hy-paaaaaaaaaaaaa space"

The way he said it made me laugh so hard I woke up laughing...

Another time I was dreaming I was in this city I have never been in before and I was magnetically attracted to this guy who was in a lot of pain. He was hurting emotionally and wasn't "adjusting" to this place we were in. I was hugging him and trying to tell him it was all ok and then all of a sudden I became lucid and said " Oh great! Everything IS really ok because this isn't real!!" He looked at me like I was totally out of my mind. There were two girls close by who were listening to us and they also started laughing and saying "what are you talking about?"? I said "This is just a dream, none of this is real! There is no need for suffering!! " When I said this I realized that I had a small group of people all around me and I said "OK then I will show you! " And I started to float above their heads. They looked puzzled and after that they wouldn't respond to me when I tried talking to them. I floated above all of them trying to get their attention once again to no avail....so I went to this very public kind of park in this huge city which really really reminded me of New York and there was this small little park with this really really tall tree. I was frustrated that I was now being ignored like I wasn't really there . So I climbed to the very tip of the big tree and yelled "Watch this!!" They all looked up as I used the tree as a slingshot and flung myself into space from there...I watched the city turn into a ball of Earth I went so fast and so far into space then through this tunnel of light...all the way into yet another "reality" . I landed in a room all by myself and just wondered why they wouldn't realize we were all dreaming....

dream yoga

here is an excellent resource that covers lucid dreaming and more:

http://www.amazon.com/Dream-Practice-Natural-Light-Revised/dp/1559391618...

dream yoga by Chogyal Namkhai Norbu. Very intense and excellent book, he recounts some of his own amazing experiences. He is sharing a method that is part of the Tibetan Dzogchen tradition, which overlaps between Buddhism and the earlier Tibetan shamanic thing called Bon.

Basically, in this method, you are not actually trying to produce lucid dreams, you are trying to maintain awareness. Lucid dreaming is a definite side effect.

it works.

Cool!

Looks like a great read!! I'm definately putting it on my must read list!

New Favorite Lucid Dream

Lately, when I have had lucid dreams I have started jumping from really really high places into the ocean. In the dream it seems so real at times. I can feel the breeze against my skin..I can smell the air...it seems so real that I am not sure that I am dreaming. Usually I am on some very very high cliff with the ocean below. I wonder to myself " Am I really dreaming?? "

Then I decide well, I am going to jump off this cliff because I think I am dreaming and If I am not then I guess that's that! So I jump and while I am falling it feels so real!! I am really falling and can feel it in my tummy like when you actually do jump from a high place or like when you are on an amusement park ride like the free fall or something...I have enough time to think..."Wow, this feels really real. What if i'm not dreaming???I am so dead!"

Then i feel the water as i splash into the ocean and know that i am dreaming and lucid and then what I started doing is going underwater and staying there for long periods of time marvelling at the fact that I can still breath and not have to worry about coming up for air or anything like that...and just explore the underwater world without any fears I would have in Real life.

Great Dreams

I have had a few but this one always makes me laugh.
I was driving to my friends house for a cook out. When I got to the city where she lived, suddenly, I was on a 3 speed bike with a basket on the front. As I peddled out of town, up a steady incline, I thought to myself, " this is really too hard." The next thing I know I am flying on my bike and a friend was with me on a bike in front. " I thought." oh good, we are dreaming." The journey became effortless. I then noticed that there was something wraped in a blanket in my basket. It was a scene right out of ET, as I think about it now, but ET wasn't even heard of at that time. We arrived and I woke up.

I am not afraid of tomorrow for I have seen yesterday and I love today.

a ghetto dream and a mall dream

this is one lucid dream that I had recently that was really funny... I lived a pretty rough life when I was younger, not quite a street person, because I always kept a job, but nearly one at the age of 16. I had a lot of intense conflict with a lot of people through my life before I realized that it was my choice to be that way, and it didn't have to be that way at all, thanks mostly to the Tibetan Bodhisattvas... but anyway, I still sometimes process a lot of that in my dreams.

I'm in this house that's completely torn up, just a nasty slum place, and there is a large black guy hurling throwing stars at me, which I'm dodging, then I confront him and threaten to call 911. It stops and changes, and I'm in a fist fight with my brother in the kitchen of the same place. I slam him up against the fridge, and then there is another transition. I wake up in the street, literally laying in the gutter with my head and shoulders on the curb, in an inner city place. There are all these kids around me, dressed in yellows and oranges, and they ask me to buy them some drug I have never heard of before. I say, sure, but wait, do me a favor... throw me up in the air. They say ok, and they pick me up, all together, and start swinging me, one, two, three, and they toss me straight up... I immediately start soaring into the sky, and there is this groovy house-type music coming up all around, and the the lyric is, "I'm dreaming, I'm dreaming," (at which point I know that I am) as I soar up in the sky, through plump little clouds that are all spirits watching me go.

The mall dream was great, the best... I have been training a kind of Tibetan practice called Dream Yoga for a while, and part of the idea is to maintain lucidity and awareness even in dreams, so that you can continue practicing at night, even in sleep. It's not enough to just know you are dreaming, once you realize it, you are then supposed to practice, which is very powerful if done in a dream state, since you can visualize just about anything. (the other part of dream yoga is maintaining awareness while 'awake,' that this is also just a dream).

So I'm in this mall, a very crowded, busy, multilevel, fancy mall. The detail is amazing, every person in this crowd is an individual, clearly defined, and it all looks real. I'm pushing through the crowd, feeling confused and frustrated. Suddenly, I realize it to be a dream... I start chanting a mantra... and every single person in this huge, overcrowded mall, turns towards me and starts cheering. Every person is laughing and high-fiving and clapping each other on the back.

Nice to have friends :)

Intense, wide awake dreaming!

I do understand what some of you are saying. I realize that some of these dreams seem so real to us. But what I would like to know is if there is one of you who is experiencing the same sensation I know is called "bringing the first attention into the dream state". I have read Carlos Castaneda's books many times because of the similiarities I have experienced with some of the areas of his writings. I am learning to calm down so I can interact with the dream people I come into contact with while in this special dream state. My main purpose is to be able to go into a dream state at "the drop of a hat", at any time or place with all of my first attention.

what kind of experience?

One night after smoking some of the good herb I felt really relaxed and lay in my bed to sleep. Somehow I started to drift off and when I opened my eyes/regained consciousness I was levitating above my bed with a warm feeling and humming sensation all around me. I felt very comfortable but somewhat confused as to why I was levitating. I was still pretty sure I was in my room.
I post this because Im not quite sure if this counts as an OBE, lucid dream, or some other form of craziness, like astral projection/etc.

I experienced something

I experienced something similar to this -- and I don't know what to call it either =)

I had smoked too, and this particular time it seemed less like my usual dreams, more like reality... in my room, and levitating, except I was able to see myself asleep and there was a circle of people standing around my bed, watching me sleep. Their faces were blurry and I couldn't identify them, but the vibe was very pleasant and comfortable. I spoke with one but I don't remember what we talked about.

I like to think that I was standing alongside whatever entities protect me outside of my physicality. I was able to be in their spot, see me from where they do, as an Observer and Protector. That dream, or whatever it was, really changed my outlook on myself to be all-around more pleasant and comfortable. Safe, really.

Regardless of what it's called, it was amazing =) I hope your experience was the same for you, and thank you for reminding me of mine!

Yeah, my experience was

Yeah, my experience was similarly fabulous.

Many people familiar with projecting energy bodies and astral projection and stuff like that describe "soul groups" and stuff like that that sound very similar to what you describe. Generally they argue that after death our soul leaves our body and joins a group of similarly-minded souls who discuss their growth and continue their mission as souls. they also discuss meeting them through certain medium/new agey/faith healer types and asking how they are doing in life, and the figures give encouragement. Whether or not you believe in that kind of stuff, its clear people do have experiences where they seem to meet other figures. I want to try to be able to do this consciously...so if anyone has any knowledge about this or techniques, I'd love some pointers. Haha, be my soul guide, as it were ;P

Journey of Souls

I recommend Journey of Souls by Michael Newton -- he discovered that by putting people into superdeep hypnosis he could regress them to a space supposedly "between lives", in which they recalled their soul families. he claimed to have consistent results with people who were unaware of each other independently confirming the structure of this higher life and the soul groups we occupy there.
