His Holiness Dalai Lama said some years ago, "All Buddhists should be planting trees". His meaning was layered, from the most practical interpretation to a deeper understanding conveyed through this simple statement.

As Buddhists, or as mindful individuals, we have a responsibility. For how can we be aware of what is taking place, and do nothing? As soon as we take responsibility for the reality that is, now... the solution will reveal itself and action can be taken.

This new approach may be contrary to some old school monastic types, especially in the Kagyu lineage which is very much focused on preserving the reality as it is. However, Karmapa himself has acknowledged the fact that Buddhism is evolving, and that these matters of environment and climate are of utmost importance and urgency.

Karmapa's website focusing on environment is here: http://www.khoryug.com/vision/
