I've been wondering about
I've been wondering about shamanism lately and have a few questions. First off, since the spore is apparently embracing shamanism, why are they doing that? I don't have a problem with it, I just wonder how does it help us better achieve our goals. Are we all supposed to become shamen or something? Is the spore embracing it simply because Pinchbeck had a few interesting experiences while tripping on hallucinagenic plants given to him by a shaman or is there some other reason?
Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to go to a spore meeting, but my understanding of this group is that we're supposed to help make the world a better place. What is the role of shamanism in that if none of us are shamen?
My I add something.
I suggest you read Paul Levy's "We are all shamans-in-training"
You can simply google: shamans in training.
It is a rather long read but below is an exerpt that I remembered reading a few years ago.
"The dissolution and breakdown of the old structures of the psyche can become a breakthrough, however, depending on how it is contained and related to by the surrounding community and unfolded. The dis-integration can be the beginning of a coming together at a more coherent, and unified level of consciousness."
The breakdown of the old structures should be seen as a breaking down of the ego which then affects your physical world as well as the subconscious world. The shaman was (is) the mediator of the physical world and the spirit world. Do you feel as if you are a filter for energies or do you feel as if you are in a state of constant or partial awareness of your surrounding world? Because, if you are, then you are in fact the most perfect example of a Shaman in training.
Now don't start running around saying The End is Near, The End is Near! Or start thinking that you are some how enlightened by some new piece of knowledge that has been given to you. This while Spore thing will allow you to realize that yes, we are all shamans( to a degree; we may not all be able to guide individuals through the spirit realm or through another dimension of time and consciousness ). We all need to continue to grow together as a group and as individuals and as l see it we are on a course for a head on collision with each other and with that great growth and infinite possibilities of reality are truly possible.
Remember, you are a filter.
-Chris.
Nice response, but one can
Nice response, but one can still come to such realizations without the help of shamanism. What I'm looking for is how are we to incorporate the ideas of shamanism into actions to effect change? Also is it necessary to go the shamanism route? Which brings me back to the idea of are we just embracing this because of Pinchbeck's experiences. I guess I'm looking for more of an action plan than a fuzzy feel good sentiment. No offense to anyone, by the way.
thanks for posting this, Maya...
3~' Thanks for posting these links, Maya, I hope they help.
Adalis, you might want to check out some of the Terence Mckenna stuff. In answer to your question about shamanism, I would say that other disciplines like yoga and meditation, while not specifically shamanistic, can provide at least some of the same insights and produce many of the same results. There are many paths up the mountain, as they say, and shamanism is one, and it's a tried and true path. Even if we don't all become shamans, per se, having an open dialogue about these things will at least make us more aware of what's happening in the world around us. Personally, I am a yoga teacher myself and have been looking at shamanism from a yoga perspective. I just published an essay on my blog that you might want to read, you can find it here:
http://www.evolver.net/user/allowah/blog/prolegomena_guide_emerging_yoga...
It will explain a lot more about both yoga and shamanism. Hope you find it useful.

Shamanism event
Hi Adalis,
Thanks for your comments. I feel the rising interest in shamanism is a worldwide phenomenon, certainly not just something popular among readers of Reality Sandwich or Evolver. The premise behind the upcoming Spore event is to explore exactly the questions you are asking -- what is shamanism, why is it important for modern civilizations, and how can it benefit our collective transformation?
These ancient healing practices have existed for many thousands of years, and they can open one up to hidden dimensions and spirit realms that aren't accessible in normal consciousness. While yoga and meditation are believed to access these realms in their own respects, many feel that the experiences of shamanic rituals – especially those accessed through plant medicines – are unto themselves a uniquely powerful and profound path to healing and discovery. This is certainly not to say that we all should "become shamans" -- that is a path for a very few, while all of us that chose to can participate in rituals led by a shaman and move toward healing and spiritual growth.
With our civilization facing multiple crises of environmental epidemics, spiritual enervation, and physical and psychological dis-ease, the resurgence in shamanic practices promises to help heal our bodies and minds, and in turn may inspire a collective shift toward cosmic consciousness that could save our species from self-destruction.
I hope that you will come to Wednesday night's Spore, with your questions and curiosity. We will have some very special guests who are shamanic practitioners in various disciplines, and they'll surely be able to address your concerns and provide deep insight into their work.
Cheers,
ST
Hi,
It's really a good idea to probe a little deeper into the subject of 70-564 exam. What you learn may give you the confidence you need to venture into new areas. you might want to check out some of the Terence Mckenna stuff. In answer to your question about shamanism, 70-178 exam I would say that other disciplines like yoga and meditation, while not specifically shamanistic, can provide at least some of the same insights and produce many of the same results. 70-513 exam There are many paths up the mountain, as they say, and shamanism is one, and it's a tried and true path. Even if we don't all become shamans, 70-433 exam having an open dialogue about these things will at least make us more aware of what's happening in the world around us.
