In tribal societies, shamans are healers and visionary leaders who go
through dangerous initiations to gain knowledge from the spirit world.
Modern culture repressed and dismissed shamanism as archaic and irrational.
Today, our society seems increasingly irrational, unable to change its
course in the face of looming environmental and economic catastrophe.
Meanwhile, shamanic practices such as soul retrieval, journeys with sacred
plants, and ecstatic dance are gaining popularity. What meaning and value do
these techniques have for us today? During an evening of 'Shamanic Panic',
we will discuss, experience, and explore.

It's a 3 part documentary, and the last is the best. It is a personal
interview with McKenna right before he died. It was the best of him
I've ever seen/heard. If anyone gets a chance to watch this, I highly
recommend it. Here's a snip of it on youtube:

The Cosmic Serpant
The Cosmic Serpant is on my short list of books to read. I'm in the middle of the Portable Jung. It's very interesting, but a bit text bookish.(700 pages). I also received a gift from my uncle, Joseph Campbells "the Power of Myth". Thought the Narby book is calling me.
Thanks for the insight.
We will our reality,

I hear you. Funny - 700
I hear you. Funny - 700 pages is not very portable. Narby's book is short and an easy read - yet full of mind-blowing insight - the footnotes alone are worth reading and if you do read it - definitely read all the footnotes as you go along. Jung is great, but anything Jung takes some energy to read - I've got Man and His Symbols sitting on my nighttable and Campbell's, The Hero with a Thousand Faces - haven't gotten to either yet. You might rent the DVD's of the taped interviews between Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell shown PBS in the 90's - I believe the book you've got (The Power of Myth) is based on these interviews. Might make your pile feel a bit smaller.
I've got a list of books and a pile of books and thoughts of other books of which I forgot to take down the titles. Baby steps right?
Good luck! Hope to make it to one of the Chicago spore meetings soon.

This should be great. I
This should be great. I will be out-of-town on the 19th, but would recommend Jeremy Narby's books as a nice compliment to this topic. Have fun!
