In the last fifty years, the meteoric rise of agribusiness has wreaked havoc
upon our global food supply. Corporate entities like Monsanto and Cargill
are wiping out agricultural diversity with monoculture crops, bankrupting
small farmers with unsustainable practices, toxifying our waterways with
pesticides and fertilizers, treating animals cruelly, and endangering the
web of life with genetically modified foods.
But a growing movement is striking back and taking action to maintain our
food security in the 21st Century. These “greenhorns” are creating CSAs,
tending rooftop gardens, building aquaponic systems, learning permaculture
principles, starting Transition Towns and eco-villages, urban homesteading,
saving seed varieties, and practicing slow food ethics to ensure
agricultural sustainability. In this Spore, we will, explore and discuss the
alternative food networks cropping up in our local communities, as well the
importance of nutrition in our lives. Spores may want to look at current FDA
dietary recommendations and contrast them with the rising interest in
organic/live foods, ayurvedic diets, superfoods, healing herbs, and more

No Farms~~~No Food
For anyone who may be interested, goto: www.Farmland.org to find out about the latest scoop on the subject. You can sign up for the newsletter which will inform you about legislation, both state and federal, regarding agriculture.
The new president. who just began his tenure, is a farmer from Illinois.
See you on the 20th...
Regards,
Dana
P.S. If you could go here too: http://www.helpgrowyoursoup.com/barn_gregory.aspx
Please vote for this farm to win a barn renovation. They are at the bottom of the competition, the top two being "school" farms that probably have a lot of kids voting on a daily basis. You can vote once a day, every day. This is a national competition and the Gregory Farm, which was founded in 1821 (!) is in Whitehall, IL. So let's give the Esareys (the owners) support from Illinois residents, especially from here in the city...remember it's our great Chicago tradition to vote early and vote often ;D and in this case it's actually legal...heh, heh.
P.S.
I forgot to mention a great Dan Rather reports on HDnet TV. Goto:
http://www.hd.net/danrather.html
On the page right next to the screen is a list, click on 8-11-09 to catch a preview of an episode on Urban Farming. I saw the show and it was extremely informative and gives one hope for the future of food production!
Unfortunately, the HDnet website is mercenary and doesn't have a free archive. But if you are seriously interested, you can buy the episode on iTunes for $1.99. If you don't have cable or satellite or even an HDTV, then I'd say it's worth it.
Though tiresome to find, it's under HD TV networks (under see all) as HDnet. When you click on that, Dan Rather Reports comes up first, then this particular show is #60: Up On The Farm...whew! The iTunes store search engine really sux, so you have to do cartwheels to get to where this episode can be found! But if I can find it, anyone who really wants to can. I hope my directions make sense and help a little.
None of the speakers I have
None of the speakers I have invited have followed up with me. I'm pretty bummed. Helge would you like to to be the speaker, you seem very invested in this topic? Please bring as many folks from the farming community as you can to the Spore.
