The Maria Santisima mission.

Is the creation of the conditions for a rebirth of the once flourishing local hand craft industry by generating new timely designs and commercial prototypes that are mass producible in the village workshops.

Welcome to Tecalpulco.

in the northern of Guerrero Mexico, shining on a round hilltop is Tecalpulco, a town of a thousand souls. legends say they came, generations ago, by underground passage from Malinalco, ancient temple site of the jaguar god, carved out of rock in the mountains.
Tecalpulcos own temple has perfect acoustics and is laid out in sacred architecture measure, the village patron, "papa Jesus" is known far and wide among rustic people and is the destination of pilgrimages with banners and smoking pipe gum and thanksgiving for the received blessings.

Tecalpulco and the tiny surroundings communities of Dolores,Cerro Gordo and el Ejido are rural satellites of the colonial silver city of Taxco. the traditional economy of these villages is agricultural, rainy season cultivation of beans,squash and corn.

Contemporary campesinos need cash for clothes, for electricity, for medicine, for school commercial handcraft has traditionally been the source of cash income, for the majority of families, cottage craft reduction is the means by which one might meet the daily demands of irreducible necessity.

tinsmiths

in the 1960's tecalpulcans were tinsmiths, they fabricated elaborate masks and mirror frames with wire and metal shears. The craftspeople used household charcoal braziers to red-heat iron nails for soldering. Another common commercial handcraft at that time was the flexible fish ornament, constructed of soldered metal. then over laid with pacific blue abalone shell scales and eyes of mother pearl.

This is part of the story of the resilient intelligence and the inexhaustible patience of the campesino artisan, engendered an elaborate and time-consuming handcraft, Endless oceans of hours have flowed into the artistic products of these villages, this is true handcraft, rooted tradition that of independent artisans.
