Evolver Los Angeles Spore 1.0 " Give it Up"

Evolver Los Angeles in association with
Evolver.net and Burners without Borders present:

Evolver Spores: Give It Up
Friday, January 29 7:30 - 10:00pm

To start off the year, Evolver LA asks that you bring donations for the homeless women and children, as well as the veterans, on the streets this winter in Los Angeles.•
• Clothes, tents, raincoats, umbrellas, tarps, sleeping bags, blankets, canned foods, and other provisions you can depart with, that may help a fellow Angeleno rest a little more comfortably during the difficult nights of winter.• Thank you.

In this spore, we explore the abstract theory and practical dynamics of gifting, the challenges of implementing this innovative, yet archaic, way of getting what you want and wanting what you get.

To participate fully in this community driven event, we request and encourage each attendee to bring with them a small treasure to gift to another member at the event in the spirit of binding our community through exchange. No need to go out and buy anything - we welcome homemade, upcycled and second hand pieces from your heart to another's hand.

The Gift Ritual will be lead by Emma Hawley, who co-led Seeding Gift Culture workshops in New York and LA with Charles Eisenstein, Reality Sandwich contributor and author of the forthcoming book, Sacred Economics."

In addition we will be screening “Burn on the Bayou,” a mini-documentary chronicling Burners without Borders gifting efforts during seven months of relief work in the Katrina-battered Gulf Coast towns of Biloxi and Pearlington, MS.
( A 30 minute Doc. starting promptly at 7:35)

Since that time, BWB has grown into an international, grassroots organization whose projects are based on the principle of gifting.

To discuss with us the past, present and future of Burners Without Borders, our special guest speakers, Brent Heyning will guide us into the practical applications of preparedness and how we can best gift those in need, amongst other amazing insights freeing us from the market with the gift of self-reliance. Followed by Nick H, from Burners w/out Borders, who will discuss his experience with the inception of Bw/oB's during the Katrina aftermath, as well as his and Bw/oB's efforts in Peru and his ongoing mission with the Riverside based organization Growcology.

Brent Heyning is a technical Energy Specialist & Builder. He is the technical Director of Toyshoppe Productions, Los Angeles, CA '04-Present; designing and building power/stages at LightninginaBottle.org, sound/power at Black Rock City, OYA Energy installation (with Ryan Wartena, Elizabeth Marley, Evonne Heyning), technical robots and craft for film/tv, custom LED design for clients such as Disneyland and the CW network, television appareances include Monster House (2005) & voice over talent for shorts & commercials.

Value of Nothing by Raj Patel

Check out this important new book that relates to this subject of gifting:

The Value of Nothing
How to reshape market society and redefine democracy

“This is a deeply thought-provoking book about the dramatic changes we must make to save the planet from financial madness” — Naomi Klein. Opening with Oscar Wilde’s observation that “nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing,” Patel shows how our faith in prices as a way of valuing the world is misplaced. He reveals the hidden ecological and social costs of a hamburger (as much as $200), and asks how we came to have markets in the first place. Both the corporate capture of government and our current financial crisis, Patel argues, are a result of our democratically bankrupt political system.

If part one asks how we can rebalance society and limit markets, part two answers by showing how social organizations, in America and around the globe, are finding new ways to describe the world’s worth. If we don’t want the market to price every aspect of our lives, we need to learn how such organizations have discovered democratic ways in which people, and not simply governments, can play a crucial role in deciding how we might share our world and its resources in common.

This short, timely and inspiring book reveals that our current crisis is not simply the result of too much of the wrong kind of economics. While we need to rethink our economic model, Patel argues that the larger failure beneath the food, climate and economic crises is a political one. If economics is about choices, Patel writes, it isn’t often said who gets to make them. The Value of Nothing offers a fresh and accessible way to think about economics and the choices we will all need to make in order to create a sustainable economy and society.

Absolutely!

We ask those that can to donate what they can. As we are a community supported organization, and we would like to branch out and have larger events. So any and every kind of donation can, and will benefit us, and help us to continue to walk the edge of this paradigm every month with the global Evolver movement.

If you would like to post this or any other event on any site or community board, you have our permission, as we are a small staff we cannot follow all these amazing leads ourselves, but that's were the community can donate time and energy into something they are apart of and believe in.
