The Long Dance is a form of ceremonial dance that incorporates elements of creativity from each individual in the form of movement, sound, dramatic enactment, costuming, writing or visual art-making. The overall context opens the way for co-creation with other individuals as well as with other dimensions of being. The combined energies of the group creates an experience that empowers intentions, both individual and collective.
The dance was developed by Elizabeth Cogburn in the 1970’s and 80’s. Deborah Koff-Chapin was an active participant in the evolution of the form from 1976 through 1984, and co-founded a Long Dance Circle in her home community in 1983 that continues to be active until this day. This form has rarely been presented to the general public.
