What steps are you taking to address peek oil & your need for food?

I thought it would be useful and interesting to share our ideas, concerns and stories regarding what we each are doing to address our need for food in light of the ominous peek oil crisis.

I have begun studying Permaculture Design and have laid down a preliminary plan for a forest garden on my very small plot of land and within my home space. I've also joined a local CSA farm and plan on volunteering there from time to time throughout the growing season so that I will have local access to food and also in order to learn a few things about growing food as well.

I am exploring the idea of yard share and will soon be looking for interested neighbors to participate in the project. Right now my neighbors thrill in green pesticide ridden lawns and automatic sprinkler systems. I have a feeling it's going to be a long, hard transformation for my community, if we can transform at all.

I've often wondered about where to begin and have decided that I should begin with myself, my family and my own little space. As I begin to build my own intelligent and regenerative design solution, I am hoping it will be much easier to bring others on board and really begin to design and build a collaborative community action plan.

This is all a bit daunting for me since I've not been an avid gardener ever.

Hi Salma!

Hi Salma -
I registered with Evolver a long while ago - but am just not starting to get a sense of what this site is. I see you post from April and admire that you're taking steps and sharing your experiences through the site here also. ( I noticed there's not a lot of other activity on the NYC Regional.) I'm curious how things are going with your family and your own space.

I'm wanting to do more Permaculture design for my own life - and right now it takes the form of a Life Design Group that I'm in, but not necessarily too much hands-on in the form of food growing. I've also been working with a non-profit for a few years doing Permaculture education stuff and we're doing courses.

If you're interested in one that happens to be integrated with yoga at a yoga ashram, I just posted an event about it here: http://www.evolver.net/event/2009/10/16/ecological_design_spiritual_prac...

Have you had any luck finding people interested in a yard-share type initiative where you live? Are you in one of the outer boroughs? I'm in Queens near Rego Park/Forest Hills and am dreaming up some yard-share type things for out there. Maybe the NYC permaculture meetup could be helpful in finding people to join you in your efforts. It's specific and concrete ideas like yours that give any 'networking' platform something to work with...

Thanks,
Alice
