What will you do when the Internet is gone, or changed forever?

This is a repost of a discussion post by stiffsock that was originally posted in Evolver Worldwide http://www.evolver.net/group/evolver_worldwide/discussion/what_will_you_...

A large part of why I took on coordinating spore events is precisely for this reason. It is my goal to have something in place for when this does happen. I feel the need to use all this technology to help us be ready for when it's gone. I hope we can discuss ways to thrive beyond the grasp of our would be rulers.

So many of us have come to rely on the "system's" forms of communication and methods of storing / accessing knowledge that we have let ourselves have a major weakness by dependence on those systems.

What will happen if suddenly this site gets taken down.

What will happen if one day you find yourself with no Internet, email or cell phone service ever again?

What happens with those things are still around but you can no longer use them because they are monitored / censored?

My recommendation is that as each local group begins to grow that it take a hard look at the "systems" that it is relying on the "system" to continue to provide to it so the group may exist and function.

Also, setting up private / localized networks is not that difficult and we have the abilities / resources to do it right here among us.

Here is a good example for you to visualize what I am talking about.

If you are on a Windows XP computer with Administrator authentication, do the following. Trust me, it is not in any way dangering your computer. This will simply show you how you can connect to "other" networks rather than your traditional http Internet documents.

Click Start and then Run. Type in "cmd" without the quotes and hit enter. (This process is slightly different on a Vista computer.)

You should now have an open Command Prompt.

Type in, without the quotes, "telnet bbs.hak5.org"

When you hit enter you should connect to the hak5 old school bbs system. It isn't a very well used bbs system, but it is a great example for opening your imagination on what other things could be done for your local communities, or the entire network.
