Evolver Spore Meeting: Take Back the Power

  • Will the end of the oil age mark the end of civilization as we know
    it?
  • Will we descend into Mad Max mayhem as pumps run dry?
  • Or can the threat of a post-Peak Oil dystopia inspire communities to
institute new sustainable models of energy production, conservation,
    and sharing?

Evolver Spores all over the world will be asking themselves these
questions on Wednesday 16 December.

Here in Sydney we've finally got our shit together and will also join
the worldwide chorus at our very first Spore meeting.

For this Spore, regional Evolvers have been invited to discuss the
future of energy, from radical innovations and renewable technologies
to conservation through upgraded environmental design. When we know
the situation we face and the options available to us, we can work
together to prepare a soft landing for the fossil fuel power-down.

It's been a big week in local climate news with neoliberal climate
deniers led by Tony Abbott seizing control of the Liberal Party from
Malcolm Turnbull and voting down the bipartisan compromise he came to
with the Rudd Government on emissions trading. With no deal to take
to the COP15 Climate Conference in Copenhagen, Australian
conservatives continue Howard's legacy of failing to lead in the
world's response to climate catastrophe. With our politicians
seemingly intent on making climate interventions far too late, we're
forced to ask: what we might do to ensure that we exist (and thrive)
in what could become a permanently altered reality?

I've taken the liberty of organising the meet at my place, The
Workshop, 16 Sloane Street, Enmore from 7pm. Half my housemates are
away with the UN Youth Delegation to Conference in Copenhagen, but
they've left plenty of their climate karma for us to bathe in as we
educate ourselves on the bio, psycho, socio and cultural possibilities
post-peak oil realities might offer.

Because this is our first Spore meeting, we'll try to spend half the
time getting to know eachother a little more and doing some general
planning for next year.

'til Then,

Luke.

P.S. - If you didn't think things were already bad enough in the
political arena, check out this video of the new leader of the
Opposition admitting (in 2008) that he has no idea of the peak oil
concept or its significance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCiHFyLIfu8
