Evolver Spore: Beyond Money, July 15

June 30, 2009

Evolver Vancouver hosts its first "spore" event in concert with Evolver spore events across North America. Last month we did a "field trip" to catch a Spiral Dynamics seminar. This month we join in a dialogue happening on Wednesday July 15 on the topic "Beyond Money". How can we move beyond the limits and the ill effects of the current global monetary system and explore alternative economic ways of living.

In Vancouver a large number of groups have been addressing this theme in various ways. We welcome you to come listen in on what some of these have been working on and thinking about to generate discussion open to all. Also to stimulate the dialogue we will feature some video clips from a few films including:

Burn in the Bayou

At the end of August 2005, Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Lousiana and Mississippi coasts devastating over 90 000 square miles and costing $120 billion in damage. 2000 miles away a group of volunteers emerged from an event in the Nevada desert. Well suited for helping in a harsh environment where the normal infrastructure had washed away, the group that converged in Biloxi and Pealington, Mississippi had one thing in common: Burning Man.

Zeitgeist: Addendum

Part III is a documentary-style interview with futurist Jacque Fresco. The film looks at Fresco's proposal of a "resource-based economy", which he claims would create abundance, is environmentally friendly and sustainable. He goes on to discuss technology which he sees as the primary driver of human advancement and he blames politics as being unable to solve any problems, because of what he claims is lack of "technical capabilities". Fresco claims that his approach is not perfect, but that "it's just much better than what we have. We can never achieve perfection".

Anticipated guests and group representation for this salon discussion thus far include Zeitgeist Vancouver, GVIAS, EmoTaz, Paracon Vancouver, Free Geek,Conscious Living Radio & Tribal Harmonix.

This event will happen by donation at the Dharma Lab located at 1814 Pandora in East Vancouver. Start time will be 8pm.

Apologies

I was really looking forward to this evening as planned however due to a tradedy in my community I had to opt to post pone this event. I am told more discussions related to this theme are coming in the future. I also feel like when this network is functioning more strongly it will be more possible to pull together more events in more ways but right now we're just arriving on the scene.
