Evolver.net and Burners without Borders present:
Evolver Spores: Give It Up
Thurs., January 21
Debt-based currencies controlled by closed syndicates of private banks are not the only way that humans can make an economy. Many tribal cultures have organized themselves around an entirely different way of exchanging value: The gift. Where our financial system expertly moves resources from the many to the few, gift-based cultures like to share what they have – as writer Lewis Hyde noted, “The gift moves toward the empty place.” At a time when billions are enslaved by passionless work while inequity reaches new historic heights, we are seeing a postmodern revival of sharing and gifting, with examples ranging from the open source movement to the annual Burning Man festival.
In this Spore, we explore the abstract theory and practical dynamics of gifting, the challenges of implementing this innovative, yet archaic, way of getting what you want and wanting what you get. We invite fellow Evolvers to bring their precious gifts – whether it be witticisms or wood-carved totems to the Spore and spread them around. Local Spores can screen “Burn on the Bayou,” a mini-documentary chronicling Burners without Borders gifting efforts during seven months of relief work in the Katrina-battered Gulf Coast towns of Biloxi and Pearlington, MS. Since that time, BWB has grown into an international, grassroots organization whose projects are based on the principle of gifting.

Napalm Dragons answer to Ryans question
[9:09:33 PM] Napalm Dragon: .............................
[9:12:45 PM] Napalm Dragon: There's an idea called Agalmics
It's the idea of the gift culture from a pragmatic view
It sees needs Surplus to work.
On it's own it destabalizes as "things" become scarce.
Economics needs Scarcity to create value for things that are abuntant.
Ecomonmics will sometimes create false scarcity through hording and even resource waist.
But put the two together and Agalmics draws the excess resources from ecomonmics and they work well together.
[9:14:40 PM] Napalm Dragon: ....
Agalmics becomes a kinf of metaphoric bubble bleeding off the eccess resources from Economics.
[9:14:55 PM] Napalm Dragon: (Spelling)
[9:17:28 PM] Napalm Dragon: HI ANGEL!!!
[9:18:15 PM] Napalm Dragon: I love you TOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
[9:25:39 PM] Napalm Dragon: Props to Gove.
"Be the change you wish to see"
[9:30:31 PM] Napalm Dragon: Very Cool
Thanks for hosting this.
I would love to participate again!
I'm in for next month... LOVE!!!

Video Recording of the Spore
Ubuntu Vancouver LoCo
I ended up speaking about Ubuntu and FreeGeek at this event however I had hoped that Randall Ross from Ubuntu Vancouver LoCo would be present to talk about the Ubuntu project. Afterwards he e-mailed this to Sobey and myself which is a very good summary of what Ubuntu is about and how you can get involved:
" I had the chance to view the video of the evolver event held last week. Good stuff and very encouraging. I have been watching projects like Zeitgeist for a while, having been initially energized by the teachings of Jacques Fresco. The synergy with Ubuntu is now self-evident.
Whenever I talk to people that are involved in projects of positive societal change I immediately think of Ubuntu, and of how few of the people who share its ethos actually use it (yet). This thinking isn't only because I'm the Ubuntu Vancouver Buzz Generator (though I will admit that it helps in some regards, especially immersion). From my experience, societal change is at least an order of magnitude or two more difficult to achieve when our information tools are locked away in the vaults of monopolies (at worst) or (at best) tightly-controlled, foreign, for-profit entities deeply tied to "cool". I always like to ask the group this question: "When you power on your computer and launch your browser, where does it take you and why? Whose logos and ads do you see? If it suddenly decided to take you somewhere else, could you resist?"
Ubuntu is the way to get instantly off-grid in a computing sense. A way to not need the oil that is "artificially scarce proprietary code." By that, I also indirectly mean a way of diverting/stopping the trainloads of cash that leave Vancouver for Redmond WA and Cupertino CA daily. Cash that can be better used creatively in our own city to solve problems locally. Having lived in both of those areas above, I can safely say that the money "we" are shipping is not being used in a sustainable, responsible, or ethical way.
I encourage you and all your members to consider joining Ubuntu Vancouver LoCo as a part of your advance toward a new way to live. We're the largest and most active group of its kind anywhere in the world. Our meetings are designed to make it easy to get useful information about how to transition all of one's everyday computing, networking, and information needs to a free (as in freedom) system. We are working towards building a sustainable computing ecosystem in Vancouver.
Registration is free, and without any obligation to ever attend a meeting, though you might want to. Registration does get you access to a low-volume mailing list and gets you in-the-loop for all our events, free CD's, information, and lots of karma.
This is the place to register: http://meetup.com/ubuntuvancouver
Thanks and I hope to meet you soon. If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask."
Cheers and thanks,
Scott
