What will you do when the Internet is gone, or changed forever?

So many of us have come to rely on the "system's" forms of communication and methods of storing / accessing knowledge that we have let ourselves have a major weakness by dependence on those systems.

What will happen if suddenly this site gets taken down.

What will happen if one day you find yourself with no Internet, email or cell phone service ever again?

What happens with those things are still around but you can no longer use them because they are monitored / censored?

My recommendation is that as each local group begins to grow that it take a hard look at the "systems" that it is relying on the "system" to continue to provide to it so the group may exist and function.

Also, setting up private / localized networks is not that difficult and we have the abilities / resources to do it right here among us.

Here is a good example for you to visualize what I am talking about.

If you are on a Windows XP computer with Administrator authentication, do the following. Trust me, it is not in any way dangering your computer. This will simply show you how you can connect to "other" networks rather than your traditional http Internet documents.

Click Start and then Run. Type in "cmd" without the quotes and hit enter. (This process is slightly different on a Vista computer.)

You should now have an open Command Prompt.

Type in, without the quotes, "telnet bbs.hak5.org"

When you hit enter you should connect to the hak5 old school bbs system. It isn't a very well used bbs system, but it is a great example for opening your imagination on what other things could be done for your local communities, or the entire network.

the net

I think the internet has been a very valuable tool as well as a dangerous weapon. It has definatly made the world a smaller place more so than television or radio. I think it is a great place for broacasting alternative ideas and media stories that are otherwise overlooked or outright purposfully distorted or shunned. Just look at this group, would such a mass grouping of like minded people have been possible without the internet? I think we can adapt if needed if the net does become unavialable or censored and monitored, which in a way it already is to a small degree. I hope we continue to have access to it truthfully. I think it's uses outweigh it's dangers.

The day of no Internet.

That's why I collect books like mad. So I will have the world's knowledge at my finertips, without the dependecy of the grid.

Local Preparedness

I think of this often, but have not come up with concrete solutions. I will have to check out your example.

A large part of why I took on coordinating spore events in my area is precisely this reason. It is my goal to have something in place for when this does happen. I feel the need to use all this technology to help us be ready for when it's gone.

Thank you so much for bringing this up, I will repeatedly address this to my local group.

Peace,
Dionysios
