The Fairy Fort was founded in the Summer of July, 2007 by a few bored Maharishi University students. While originally just a low wall surrounding a fire pit and covered by a tarp, it has expanded in recent seasons to include several stick walls providing a clear sense of two "rooms," the camouflage tarp has been replaced by a full-sized roof made of branches and grass, and metal floors ensure a pleasantly mud-free walking and sitting experience. It is currently home an uncounted (but thriving) population of adorable field mice.
The guiding philosophy of the Fort's caretakers has always been to provide a boon to the surrounding ecology, to harm no life in its construction, and a preference for natural or discarded materials over store-bought elements. Nails have always been forbidden. It is made of branches found lying about, never chopped from trees. Tornado debris from the surrounding field has been incorporated into the structure. Attempts have been made to raise garden plants (such as peas, corn, and sunflowers) but have thus far been stymied by the lush grasses of the surrounding field and lack of labor-hours necessary to properly cultivate the land for gardening.
Currently underway is the effort to plan a thriving garden into next year's structure, as well as creating some cleared outdoor space (sort of a "lawn") for sunbathing and picnics - even in summertime when the grasses and weeds are shoulder-high.
