Season Updates

Over the weekend the Upper Midwest was generously soaked with some much needed rain. If the temperatures rise above 70 soon, and there are some warm nights, morels will be popping up very quickly.
I am curious if anyone has found any morels yet, or has heard reports of anyone finding any. This information can be crucial to a successful hunt, because as soon as they start to pop in your area you want to begin your hunt. The season is short and fickle for morels so the more information the better.
Since I live in the Twin Cities area, I can provide updates for the surrounding area, and since I hunt morels in southwest Wisconsin (Genoa to be precise) I can provide updates for that area as well. I welcome others to do the same for your area.
I hope to hear good news soon and best of luck!

First Hunt
It has been a beautiful week here in Minneapolis and I have heard that the morels have begun to pop. I will be making my journey to southwest Wisconsin this weekend for my first hunt of the season.
If you are a novice hunter or just a curious hiker, some places to look for morels in the forest include:
-south facing hillsides
-near dead elm trees (which can be identified by the white wood beneath their bark)
-near dead oak trees (go to http://www.oplin.lib.oh.us/tree/ to find information for identifying trees)
-areas that have some moisture in the soil
If your area has had some warm nights and decent rainfall recently morels are probably beginning to pop up. When you go out to hunt make sure you have a few bags (preferably mesh, but really anything works) just in case you hit a big patch, be sure not to trespass, and be aware of poison ivy and ticks.
I hope to hear some stories on here soon, I'll be sure to post my results after the weekend.
