Stop Using Microsoft Windows and Start Using Linux

Good day, all. I figure I'll add my pennies of Open Source knowledge to the discussion board...
In case any of you out there are fed up with Microsoft Windows and the constant software upgrades that necessitate unnecessary hardware upgrades... give Linux a try. More specific, give Ubuntu Linux a try.
It's time to get out of the damn strangle-hold that Microsoft has over our pocket books and the computer industry as a whole. It's kind of silly to look back on it now; after using and understanding the Open Source system, it would be retroactive to switch back to Windows.
Here are some quick reasons why Linux is better than Windows and even Macintosh:
-Each year Microsoft upgrades Windows to include more features that maybe 10% of users need. These new "features" create more demands on the computers, so everyone is forced to upgrade their computer--- and spend $$$. Otherwise, your computer just gets slower and slower...and slower. . . a n d s l o w e e e r r r. . . .
-Linux is installed with the bare-bones necessities of computing. Because of this, you get a slick-looking interface (better or as-good-as Macintosh), and a MUCH faster computer. You add the programs when you realize you need them, rather than starting off with 30 programs of which you will use only 4.
-Just about every piece of software for Linux is free/Open Source. A lot of collaboration goes into the making of popular programs, and the point is to keep it community oriented-- to serve the needs of the users-- and keep it free.
-There are many professional level 3D programs, image editing, office productivity suites, website editing, video, and studio recording programs to be used... for Free.
-One of my favorite reasons to use Ubuntu [Linux]: it will add YEARS to your computer's life span. I am currently using a 4+ year old laptop that just SUCKED with Windows XP. I mean, it "worked" but it wasn't very smooth. Anyhow, since I've used Linux, this thing runs as fast as if it were brand new! No joke. I also installed it for my mom's 8+ year old computer at home, and that thing is also like new.
-If you are worried about losing some of your favorite Windows programs, you can run MOST of those with Linux too. So, basically, there is NO reason for you not to upgrade.

And if you need help with the transition, message me! But no worries, it is as easy, or easier, than installing Windows. Thanks for reading.

my linux experience
I'm a recent convert to linux Ubuntu, mostly because I've only recently been able to set up a computer for myself. So far so good. I'm into digital art so the biggest plus for me is using Gimp (which I actually like better than photoshop) and a free fractal program I picked up.
Although I've got to say my experience in the gaming world is a little less happy, I tried to install a Civ4 under Wine and it wasn't a good experience for me... after about a half an hour of moving around dll files I finally got it to work, but it was mad slow and crashed as soon as I actually loaded a scenario :) So I would suggest if you want to play games and are a noob to linux... to load it on a windows partition and not to bother with Wine and Cedega bullshit. Although for some things it might work easy, I don't know. And it may actually be a blessing in disguise because now I spend more time playing around in linux and creating art than playing games.
Speaking of which I did load a windows partition on this pc like a breeze (after my family begged me), but at the moment my copy of Windows XP seems to be having trouble finding the internet! Which is just totally retarded. And I only have 30 days left to 'authenticate' it, it says... but I need the internet to do that.
I wonder, on a website like this that is so steeped in the open source ethics, how many people still use windows to post here?
Gaming on Linux
Yeah, I definitely agree that Linux has a ways to go until (if ever) accepted as a Gaming platform. If there is one facet of my computing experience that I felt was missing from my move to Ubuntu, it would be that. Although, with less distraction available, my productivity has increased =]
Linux
I've started using linux ubuntu two months ago. works like a charm; it is fast and efficient for the work i do.
I like the regular udates and the more i am using it the more i discover the limitations of microsoft/ windows XP / 7 .
I want to give linux a shot
I've never used a linux build before, but have always admired the philosophy and dedication of those who do. The only thing holding me back is the massive amount of different versions. I have absolutely no idea where to begin.
I'm looking for a pretty stripped down system; I don't really game, other than the occasional online flash games and such. Primarily, what I'm looking for is a compact OS that I can use for home recording, writing and internet. I'd also like to learn a bit about programing, but here again, I don't know where to start. I know basic Basic and very rudimentary HTML, but when I've tried to learn C++ and PHP I could never get the compiler to work.
Anyway, sorry for the ramble. Any suggestions on what version of linux I should try? Or what programing language would be useful to dabble in?
Thanks,
-Ben

more to linux
Hi all,
Please dont forget that there are many different types of linux, OpenSuse, ferdora etc and some work better than other on different types of machines. I personally run Opensuse 11.1 to 11.4 on my various machines. My kids use live disks of fedoras games disk, also opensuse's version for education, this is made for students in mind.
Also The hassle free side of it when you get to keep home directory(where you keep personal files) and change the operating system is just fantastic, all you do is update the few extra programs you might like vlc player, extras in firefox so you can download off places like youtube etc.
You update when needed to make sure any weaknesses are fixed and dont have to buy virus scanning software. bonus
build software,All work you do for the community is acknowledged and you know you have help out other people. You build what you want to build,
what i cant understand is, why would people want to pay for Windows, anti-virus software plus other programs, most of all this is free in linux, just because the media say Linux is shit it doesnt mean it is, they get paid to try and sell you something, and there is not market in selling Linux but there is in microsoft windows.
Im am currently buying a new laptop, do you think i can buy a PC with out windows? Nope not unless i want to pay more for the privilege, When buying you a computer, ask the sales person why you cant have linux loaded or why you have to pay for a Windows licence even if you dont want it. talk about a monopoly.
so what i will do is burn off windows so i can re install if i want to sell the PC, I might even dual boot it so if a mate gets some fan-dangled program that wont run in wine, so i can play for a couple of days/weeks.
So i all urge you to swap to the Linux side, after a short time you will wonder why you wanted windows in the first place. you know it makes $cents$ (sense)!
only thing please look up on youtube how to say Linux, its not 'LINEx' but 'Lyn nux' <- yes and when dealing with Australians, Aussie is said Ozzie like Ozzy Osbourne, there is my spat lol
here is the history of Linux

I have been using Linux for over 10 years and i keep discovering more about what i can use this software for every week, so jump in as quick as you want, remember you can use live usb stick/disk so you can see how it goes.
hope this helps, may the force be with you
