El crudamente se jacta de las otras chicas;
entonces, le dice que es “sólo una broma”.
He crudely brags about other girls;
then tells her he is “only kidding”.
Cuando él se enoja, se burla de ella;
cortejandola con sus gestos practicado.
When she gets mad, he teases her;
wooing with his practiced gestures.
Seguro de si mismo, es guapo y seguro;
y ella es el buque de su fuerza varil.
He is handsome and so certain cocksure;
she is the vessel of his manly strength.
Arturo golpea a la profundidad insondable de su psique india;
friamente cargando y descartando varios pedazos de ella misma.
Arturo bashes at the fathomless depth of her indían psyche;
cooly charging and discarding shard-like sections of herself.
Pareciera que Arturo quiere correrle a ella sólo para atraerla;
como queria amarla sólo para odíarla, destruirla para recrearla.
It is as if Arturo wants to drive her away, only to lure her;
to love her only to hate her, to destroy her to recreate her.
Vivieron juntos durante un tiempo y fueron muy felices;
el la cortejó, diciéndole que no podría vivir sin ella.
They lived together again for a time, and were happy together;
he courted her, telling her that he could not live without her.

En el patio de adobe, las mujeres estan conversando; la luna
es visible durante el día mientras ellas comparten un momento.
In the adobe patio, the women are having a conversation; the moon
is visible in the daytime, as the two of them are sharing a moment.
“La vida tiene fin; un día te vas a quedar con tus recuerdos.”
“esta vida es una telaraña del destino, no puedes cambiarlo.”
"Life has an end; one day you are left with your memories only."
"this life is woven of destiny, one can't do anything about it."
Le cuenta cosas que uno tendría que ser vieja para comprender;
así que Azucena, muy respetuosamente esta sentada escuchándola.
She tells her things one had to be to be *old* to understand;
so Azucena, very respectfully is sitting and listening to her.
“Los muchachos malos te dicen mentiras”, mirando adentro, ella menea
su cabeza como una fiera “los muchachos buenos se mienten a si mismos"
"The bad boys tell you lies", she said, shaking her head fiercely;
then she looks inside and she says "the good boys lie to themselves"
Azucena salio en sueños mientras Alegunda seguía con su historia;
sus ojos se hicieron redondos mientras los de la vieja, almendras.
Azucena flew off into dazes as Alegunda rambled on her history;
her black eyes grew round and the old woman’s eyes were almonds.
“’Estoy enamorado de ti” “Nunca jamás he conocido a alguien como tú!’”
los muchachos las han dicho esto a las chachas desde la antigüedad”
"'I am in love with you' 'I have never ever known anyone like you'";
the boys have been saying this to the girls since very ancient times"
“Han estado usando las mismas palabras desde que vinieron los españoles”
esto es lo que Alegunda le dice, sentadas allí en el corredor de adobe.
"They've been using the same exact words since the Spanish men came"
this is what Alegunda tells her, sitting there in the adobe hallway.
Azucena podía haber recordado que Arturo le dijo a ella esas mismas
palabras pero parecía no recordar o a lo mejor ella no... escuchaba.
Azucena may have remembered that Arturo had said these words to her;
but she does not seem to remember, perhaps she doesn´t... she listens.

la luna redonda se cierne sobre cielos oscuros;
ella se sienta como si estuviera en un sueño
round white moon hovering over dark skies;
she sits there as if she were in a dream
la niña con pelo de cuervo esta sentada frente a ella
con su voz curveada con extraño acento costero sureño.
the girl with the raven hair sits across from her
with her strange curved coastal lowlander’s voice
el viento de la noche aulla, ella esta tomando el té;
la luna reduce, se desliza sobre el cielo estrellado
the night wind is howling, she is drinking tea;
the moon shrinks, it slides down the starry sky
las trenzas largas, gordas y negras de su amiga
reflejan el resplandor lunar en brillantes líneas
the long fat black pig tails of her fríend;
reflect the lunar radiance in shining lines
andando como perdida atráz de la casa al bosque en un calmil;
ella excava en la tierra durmiente con sus dos manos morenos
wandering out back into a weedy patch in the dirtyard;
digging at the dreaming earth with her two brown hands
algo algo envuelto lleva en la mano, tiembla
ante un sonido! es la niña con pelo de cuervo
something something wrapped in her hand; she
startles at a sound! it’s the raven-hair girl
la muchacha le hace un gesto como diciendole “lo ves, esta bien”
ella es una silueta en contra de la luna que se raya descendiendo
the girl makes a gesture like "you see, it is all right"
she is silhouetted against the streaking moon descending
pero no se siente bien, está debilitada y afiebrada;
la luna hace ruidos raspantes cayendo en el horizonte
but she does not feel well she is feverish and quaking;
the moon makes scratching sounds, falls into the horizon
