The Transition Town model if you havn't already heard was initiated in Totnes,UK and has now gone global.
It all starts off when a small collection of motivated individuals within a community come together with a shared concern: How can our community respond to the challenges, and opprtunites of peak oil and climate change? www.transitiontowns.org
This morning I attended the first 'Transition Town' meeting of my home burrough of Havant, Hampshire. About 30 people turned up which doesn't sound alot but it gets the ball rolling and those that were their were enthusiastic and several projects are now underway, someone kindly donated money to send two of us on a permaculture course in Brighton, there is going to be a carboot sale to generate not only funding but publicity and public awareness. I am going be organising a 'Trash Carnival' to raise awareness of peak oil by using oil based products to create works of art/sculpture and include a 'Trash Band', procession, Trash Circus and any other Trash based ideas we can come up with.
I'd like to use this space to discuss ideas with any of you who may be involved in your local Transition group or related community project. Happy Transitioning.

In my community advances
In my community advances mainly seem to have been made in local food groups. I'm interested in radical educational initiatives and complementary health and spirituality, which hasn't got off the ground yet. I'm moving in the summer and I'm hoping my next destination will be different. My friend in Totnes has found many useful initiatives happening there, and feels encouraged that they are building a strong local infrastructure. There is also this initiative http://www.parallelcommunity.com/home.html but I don't know much about them.
Wicked, Thanks for the info.
Wicked, Thanks for the info. 'The Trash Carnival' is well underway, the synchronicities have been sweet and I'm amazed at how quickly things are moving along. Its Well worth speaking to people in your area who are on the same level about 'Transition Towns', as it was only a few weeks back I was thinking.. this town is shit! No one has a clue, am I the only fucker round here who gives a damn, How wrong I was.
Haha I see what you mean
Haha I see what you mean about it being worth talking about transition towns with people around you. Didn't even realise until just now that I was until recently living in an officially designated one, initiated by the friendly forest-dwelling folk who live just across the road from my parents' house - and Lampeter, the last uni I went to is also one. Actually looks like I've been surrounded by them for a while without knowing - aside from Totnes, which is obviously a hotbed of hippy mobilisation
I should do some more research into Transition towns, I have to admit relative ignorance, although unfortunately (in many ways) I now live in a pretty unprogressive part of London

That is cool that people can receive the business loans and it opens completely new opportunities.
