Dear Yogis and Yoginis,
Time for a poll and I'd love for you all to participate! I'd like to get a sense of who is out there in this Evolver Yoga Group, and begin to connect to one another.
Please leave a comment answering any or all of the following questions:
1. What style of yoga do you practice?
2. How often do you practice?
3. How has yoga assisted in your personal transformation?
Namaste,

Hallo Marisa, nice to see
Hallo Marisa,
nice to see you're trying to get this group moving!!!
my answers:
1. depends.... at the moment am studying the astanga series so that's become my personal practice focus.
2. around 1.5 hrs daily... sometimes more... sometimes not!
3. physically - increased flexibility, suppleness and strength. greater awareness of my own body and of its problems
mentally & emotionally - through the hatha, pranayama and meditation I find my ability to concentrate on my tasks at hand has greatly improved. I am able to recognize more quickly when my emotions get out of hand, I am generally calmer, greater tolerance, even with simple things like driving in traffic becoming more tolerant of all the chaos around me....

Wonderful!
Mickey,
Thank you for your response. I often enjoy Ashtanga as well for my personal practice, as its easy to get into the flow with since its a set series. I was fortunate to participate in a five-day work shop several years ago when Pattabhi Jois was on his last world tour, and every now and then when I can see my students are up to it, I put them through the Primary Series.
All that you mentioned for benefits are elements that I see in my own life. Ahhhh, the simple healing power of yoga...
Namaste!

As for me...
1. I call the class I teach "Dynamic Yoga" since I know no other official name for it. I was trained at the Nosara Yoga Institute in 2002, in their Interdisciplinary style of Hatha yoga - leaving what I teach to evolve out of my own personal experience and what I love. Right now that's a blend of pranayama, meditation, a fun, fluid vinyasa flow, capped off with a yoga nidra. I also practice Ashtanga and Power Yoga on my own, and sometime Bikram.
2. For the past month I've been getting out of bed early in the morning, right after my partner gets out of the shower, and I lead him through a short vinyasa for about 15 minutes. Then I teach an hour and a half class one a week at Muse Studio here in Boise. Besides that...I've haven't been giving myself much time for a personal practice, though I do practice a few pranayamas throughout the week.
3. Yoga is my path of personal transformation! So much I could say on that subject...but will hold off for now...
Would love to hear more from the rest of you!
Deep peace,
m
My "Practice"
1. I took ashtanga several years ago. Enjoyed it immensely. With two children and many appointments and my wife attending school online and working... I occaisionally run through a few sun salutations mentally. Although more an armchair yogi of late, I still consider myself very into and interested in ashtanga.
2. Covered in answer 1. Although when substitue teaching, some poses from series II grab students' attention pretty quickly?
3. Yoga has transformed my life in many ways... but mostly subtle yet profound ways that I have no words to explain. Greater flexibility physically (when physically practicing), greater patience and repose under stress, and better understanding of mind-body relationships.
Namaste!
It's funny I don't even know
It's funny I don't even know the name of the style I practice twice a week at my local bike shop. I think they call it flow, vinyasa perhaps? I've actually found a yoga studio closer to my house in the countryside that offers kundalini, which is becoming of increasing interest to me. So far, in my few months of practice, yoga has helped me become more gentle and forgiving with myself, in terms of my own addictions and negativity. Now I don't further escalate my negativity by being upset about being negative, as often. I've quit smoking, I rarely ever drink alcohol any more, and I've given up meat, but not because I feel they were bad for me per se, but because I've become more in touch with my body and my spirit and all those habits just sort of faded away. I can not wait to see what the coming years bring with my continued yoga practice...
Namaste,

kundalini
I've been enjoying kundalini yoga for about a year now. Rhythmic movement, breathing and chanting has helped me be aware of the emotional and physical stress that I hold in my body. I have been able to relax the reoccurring stress deposits in my shoulders, thighs and jaw. Particularly for my jaw, the chanting has helped. I like to chant deeply. The vibrations through my skull are so relieving.
Before yoga, I was not able to relax almost every muscle in my body systematically and it has helped with my regulation of mood when dealing with stressful situations through breathing. Breathing is so important.
I injured my back last winter on a snowboarding trip and did the Kriya for Morning Sadhana ritual every morning to be able to function. It worked very well! I have been slacking lately, only doing the union about once a week. But for the benefits to my mind, body and soul, I will do more.
