I don't consider myself a fan very often but in the case of the Thievery Cooperation: definitily YES (... there is also Bonono, Mohorizons.. too, so if you don't know them give them a try..)
Grateful Dead of our time??????
Ummmm.... Yeah, Thievery is GREAT but maybe you should think harder about your word choice when you say they are the Grateful Dead of our time on a website like this... You have probably not spent much time with the Dead tapes if that's how you feel. We're all entitled to our opinions, but it is absurd to make the comparison when GD literally CREATED the scene which Thievery now thrives in. I mean, String Cheese did MUCH more for the music scene in "our time" than Thievery will ever do and Umphreys McGee is a much tighter and more talented group of musicians as far as bands on tour today.
Listen to some 74 or 77 GD tapes and go see Dark Star Orchestra and THEN decide if your statement even makes sense.
oh yeah!
and besides.... who would want there to be a Grateful Dead of our time?! the BEST THING ABOUT THE MUSIC SCENE TODAY is that there are hundreds of thousands of artists out there touring every day and making AMAZING MUSIC!!!! i am so glad bands like pink floyd, the beatles, and grateful dead helped to make the scene what it is today, but the fact that we don't ever just FOLLOW ONE BAND anymore is why the scene today is so vibrant and ALIVE!

haha
i know how it is.... every time i go to an epic as hell live show i am like "this is what it was like to see the dead" hehehe....
and um.... sound tribe still manages to pull of some AMAZING shows, but they were way better back in 2004 or so... they're from my part of the country and have a HUGE following here and have for a long time, but lately they just seem so OUT OF IT and NOT INTO THE MUSIC they are trying to share... and the peaceblaster album was SUCH a letdown :( maybe new album will rock our socks off, i hope so, because i want to hear brand new and old stuff, not peaceblaster when i pay lots of money to go to their shows....
you know, i LOVE the electronic music scene of today, which tribe and disco biscuits are really pioneering along with dj's like bassnectar and many others, but when i REALLY THINK ABOUT IT, i realize that i just can't have those RELIGIOUS MOMENTS when seeing live electronic music like i do when i see dso or thievery or derek trucks or allman brothers or gov't mule or umphrey's or any other number of actual BANDS... i can have EPIC moments, MAGIC moments and all that at electronic shows, but RELIGIOUS?, nope! and afterall.... it is those religious moments that i seek that keeps me going to shows every weekend in the first place....
just some thoughts :)
