This is a call to all musicians around NYC, preferably ones able to read music.
I am willing to have some sessions where we learn to read music!
I am trying to set up a performance of "In C" by Terry Riley.
Anyone interested in playing please reply and we can try to make this dream happen.
I am friends with a bar in the Lower East Side that is pretty open to different types of stuff.
I will be talking to them about providing the space. The door charge is ours if we want one.
So come join in on the minimalist madness!

wowo

i came across terry riley a while ago, probably while looking for people who will impress me as much as john zorn.

unfortunately for me i cant read music.. i could learn! i have the basics!..

i bought my girlfriend 'the last camel in paris' and since we broke up terry riley makes me sad

cool

Hmm... not able to read? Hmm... this may be an ongoing problem.
I could easily teach you
but what I worry about is the amount of time it takes to build that kind of brain circuitry.
It might be fun though!
Thanks for the grok.
I have no problem teaching music but what I wonder is how much time you'd be willing to give to this kind of work.
Although this music sounds groovy it takes considerable concentration and skill.
It would just take a little work/play/practice/evolution.

also

sorry about your girlfriend. I am sure Terry has no intentions of reminding you about that.

Okay!

Now that I think about it a little. It would be fun to teach people to read!
Maybe we can make a party out of it!
This is a great piece to do that! Though the end of it gets pretty tricky!
We can take our time.
Chris, know any more pitched (i.e. not drums, sadly) musicians that would be willing to learn how to read?

haha :-)

well i am primarily a guitar player, but i love to get my hands on any instrument

i usually play with my friend max who plays bass

i only listened to 'in c' once, i will again. its basically an improv piece isn't it? that's why i wonder about reading it

but yeah, trust me, i know sight reading takes a lot of practice, it's something i always wished i had put more work into and developed the knack for it earlier

faux improv

there are 53 cells of music that the musicians can repeat as many times as they want before moving on
so in some ways it is improvised but it is also set very firmly in certain rythms and tones
I was looking at it last night and some of the rythms are pretty complicated
I would also suggest some kind of entheogen while listening. maybe just a mild one
that's the way Terry would like you to listen to it.
I watched a performance of one of his piece and he had written a request for the audience
he wanted everyone to be "psychedelicized" for the listening

Coincidence?

In C is scheduled to be performed next month at Galapagos-!
I met Terry on his 70th birthday tour of Japan, which was sponsored by the American Consulate...
we hung out after the show in Fukuoka, and I had him sign a copy of 'Descending Moonlight Dervishes" who's label turned out to be in my hometown in CT...

Awesome stuff !
