Top 3 Worst and Most Self-Defeating Mistakes New Agers and World Savers Make.

First things first, let's get an idea for who these so called new agers and world savers I'm referring to are. I'm sure you know a few...

Typically, they:

*Are perennially perky, positive people who see nothing but love and light, and encourage you to do the same even in your darkest hour.

*Are obsessively concerned with their carbon footprint (and yours) and bandy buzz words around like "sustainable," "organic," and "green."

*Follow Indian gurus, silently hold that theirs is better than yours, and tell you that "we're all one."

*Sometimes can't be around your "negative vibe."

*Preach that vegetarian, vegan, and raw diets are far superior to any other.

*Tell you as you face foreclosure or other such crisis that you created the situation with a choice and a choice will get you out of it.

*Market pseudo-scientific healing techniques, and for $100/hr., will perform a "remote healing" for you.

*For hefty sums will "coach" you to realize your dreams through the power of your thought alone.

*Seem to have every answer to every existential question, yet their answers sound strikingly familiar to every stanza in The Power of Now.

You get the idea.

Actually, many of these people are really well intentioned but often commit atrocious mistakes that render their effort to help others and make the world a better place ineffectual (and sometimes perilously harmful http://nymag.com/news/features/63259/). Here's the top 3 worst and most self-defeating mistakes they make:

#3 — Confuse Charity for Vanity.

"Those who know, do not speak. Those who speak, do not know." — The Tao

You could also call this politics disguised as compassion. The classic example is the marketer seeing opportunities in the $11B self-help industry who pretends to be a healer to turn a profit. It's the humanitarian who travels to foreign lands to "help," but really is there to push a personal agenda or for a photo opportunity to further a career.

#2 — Project Personal Issues On the World.

"Let him that would move the world, first move himself." — Socrates

The vast majority of new agers and world savers have not done their own inner work and carry deep pain from unresolved childhood issues. So now it becomes their job to heal others and the world, which is really just a coping strategy for avoiding their own shadow ... their own pain. This is why they all seem to live in a one season world of faux happiness, where everything is "all good" and "love and light."

#1 — Fail to Act.

"The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." — Edmund Burke

Most new agers and world savers though knowing every answer to every existential question can't seem to cross the bridge from knowing to action. It's one thing to say "we're all one" and entirely another to act on this understanding. Indeed many decry Big Brother and the evil of the establishment, yet continue on in their smiley one season world without ever doing a thing about it.

Niiiice

I think this blog might have hit home for a few people, but I really enjoyed reading it and I loved the quotes you picked out for each point. =D

very enjoyable

Any advice for moving past/integrating with the shadow oh wise one? I definitely fall into category 2.

All bridges can be rebuilt.

Right on!

I just posted something very similar on my blog called Shamanic Consciousness:
http://thetoltecpath.wordpress.com/2010/01/25/shamanic-consciousness/
and someone even commented with the quote from the Tao that you cited: "Those who know, do not speak. Those who speak, do not know."
So many talking heads...

Totally Cool

Caviat Emptor! Let the buyer beware.... In a society surounded by messages of constant purchases which will solve every problem, is it any wonder we have the guru of the moment, the newest fad change, and predatory sage out to make a buck! You have nailed it on the head here... Step one... Look into the dark, Step two... Clean your own mirror. Step three... silence is the best action... action is the best silence. Thanks!

Thanks for your comments.

Hope that people who read this article know it was all in good fun. Lord knows I've committed some of those mistakes at one time or another (and still do sometimes).

The subject is of concern to me though because there are so many false prophets out there now chanting on their megaphones that they are the solution, they have the answer, etc. Since they grab public and media attention, they end up casting a cloud over those of true heart and pure action, who in integrity go about their work quietly.

I think it's time for us to get louder.

@doctordewey: the first step is always acknowledging and bringing awareness to the pattern. From there solutions arise, such as engaging in some form of process work. Historically, for me, what would pain me in the outside world (usually stuff in my relationships and family) would always be a prompt that some inner nugget of toxicity was ready to be cleansed.

Alchemy

I like your blog. Anyone interested in identifying new age pitfalls should check out Catherine MacCoun's On Becoming An Alchemist.

.... and that's why the tag

.... and that's why the tag line to all my comments is:

The Revolution is Within

Would-be revolutionaries who neglect inner work can accomplish nothing of any lasting significance. They will only clothe the Emperor in new clothes.

More here realize this than you might think, however. This (r)evolution is one of the mind, of the soul. Not fighting in the streets, holding up signs and shouting slogans at riot cops.

Which is not to say that action is not important. It is. But those who act from wisdom, can accomplish much with the smallest action ... with an act so subtle that it appears to be no movement at all to those accustomed to sturm und drang. To lift another concept from the Tao Te Ching, wu wei - 'not-doing' - is the most powerful way of doing things.

Anyhow, well said. Thank you!

The revolution...

Well said @psychegram.

Let's also remember Pluto is in Capricorn--the last time it was was during the time of American Independence from tyrannical British rule.

See any similarities between then and now. It's pretty overwhelming.

The big difference is, and you hit on it beautifully, is that the current revolution is an inner one and not so much about kicking ass in the external world (though that might happen???).

Glad you all liked the post! :)

The tao quote

I think the rapid change in our world, as evident by this website, is now pushing for those who have understood, to speak out, as opposed to be silent like we would if it were a millennia or two or three ago... in my fear of assuming the meaning of your blog to be negative I misunderstood somethings, but in recognizing my fear I re-read it and totally saw my misunderstandings... good observations

Interesting article....

I agree with some of the stuff.. other stuff.....

Have you read BRIGHTSIDED by Barbara Erenreich?... Do.. it is very good.

I am pretty harsh.. about my actisvism..

I do have a few friends who have that "eternal white light" glow about them.. and I wonder if they ever have a bad day.. it is IRRITATING.

That being said... practically.. I do believe in the idea that the "world is one".. but I delve down into the quantum physics implications... and while I may believe that.. I know that doesn't solve the pain and suffering.. just merely provides an opportunity for a paradigm shift.

I think that practical matters regarding our diet and lifestyle IS important and isn't just some "new age" thing. It is practically and something more folks should be aware of. How we choose to live on this planet IS important. It IS our "awareness" and you are right.. not everyone who following this "new age" path has a shred of "awareness".. they just are floating around.

While I believe there is a shift DEFINATELY occuring right now... (not just in 2012)... I don't necessarily believe that it is going to be some "magical" shift... but.. it could be profound.. but it requires US to do a lot of individual work.
There still is a lot of dark energy around......

It is important that we embrace a new paradigm shift... let go of old ideas that no longer serve us. (what is the old adage.. You cannot solve todays problems with the thinking that created them?)... I believe that is true.
This has nothing to do with dropping your brains out on the floor... but just being aware.. and moving through ...

It is a balance... always a balance......

There is potential out there..

"Those who know, do not

"Those who know, do not speak. Those who speak, do not know." — The Tao

-- naturally. deep reality can't be easily expressed (if at all) with words

Good post - I've been feeling a little impotent because I'm not taking to the streets trying to start a riot in accordance with the anger i often feel towards london, but this isn't what is needed, not initially anyway - as you say, it is much more important to work on ourselves, and also to expand otherwise peaceful networks of like-minded friends. Thanks alot - you've actually made me feel a hell of a lot more optimistic than i did when i woke up this morning!!

I think that the mistake

I think that the mistake that a lot of people make is misinterpreting a lifestyle choice as a form of "change" or activism.

I'm all for a healthful and compassionate diet, and try to restrict my meat and dairy intake. I love cooking vegan and vegetarian meals and have turned on many of my friends to compassionate diets.

But I've seen many people who use their vegan diet in the same way that people with eating disorders use their diet. The food, and the discipline over what goes into our body, serve as a way for us to feel some measure of control. By not eating meat, or carefully inspecting the labels on all our foods for obscure animal products, we can feel that we are somehow having this huge moral impact on a world that is out of our control.

I'm certainly not trying to say that changing our diet isn't important, but it's also important not to take things to extremes. Let's not fool ourselves by taking on the trappings of lifestyles which promise only to relieve our guilt and give us an inflated sense of power and purity.

A few thoughts

Most of the characteristics in your list described someone who is:
1. Not in touch with themself
2. Unaware of how what they say and do impacts others
3. Over zealous (which includes #1 and 2)
4. Afraid (coming from a sense of lack, which can include #1-3)

These four qualities apply to many people, not only those who are "new age" or "world savers." It just expressed differently depending on the belief system. A very religious person can be not in touch, unaware of how they impact others, overzealous, and fearful/lack oriented. So can someone who is very scientifically focused. It's all the same qualities dressed in different "clothing."
Addressing it in the form of new age and world changers is only part of the resolution. For real change to take place, I believe we all need to look deeper.

We must heal ourselves

We must heal ourselves before we can heal our planet Earth.
Yes, we are all connected by the Zero Point Field we and all living things are constantly exchanging energy and when we heal our own individual energy fields we help all that we are connected to, all that exists.

We all must face a dark night of the soul and rise to the challenge to overcome and heal from it. The year 2010 will be and has been a year of challenges. We will all have opportunities to shine our inner light when we come out of a dark night.

Yes, your thoughts and intentions effect everything around us and all that we share a connection with.

May all be well our world.

postmodern narcissism is even more self-defeating

"Preach that vegetarian, vegan, and raw diets are far superior to any other"

A vegan diet is superior to any other, the facts are undeniable, to those that actually look into it rather than ignorantly and arrogantly dismiss it:
http://sites.google.com/a/veganmail.com/veganicrevolution/

I think your post could be renamed:
"Perspective of a postmodern narcissist trying to justify their own apathy."

Pointing out a bad example of "charity" does not mean that most people that give to charity are like that. It's the same with those that dismiss the massive evidence that the official 9/11 story is a lie (the continued foundation of mass-killings of hundreds of thousands of civilians and domestic tyranny) and focus on unsubstantiated and much less important theories instead, again to "justify" the fact they are actually doing nothing of real importance themselves (your own behavior, which you project out on others, in this case "new agers", a classic ego defense/denial). Also those that "decry Big Brother" are doing more than you, which is basically just being a defender of the status-quo, though you'll deny this I'm sure, because you're really radical, but just in a "rational" way, right? When postmodern narcissists talk about what's "rational", they are really talking about irrational rationalization, always avoiding the crucial facts and focusing on exaggerations and irrelevant information.

I recommend you find better things to criticize (like say the occupations, fascism/tyranny/oppression/violence/injustice/exploitation) than those trying to make the world a better place (promoting those "bandy buzz words" of "sustainable" and "organic" and "present moment awareness"), it doesn't make you look cool to those that are aware, if that's your egoic belief, it just makes you look lame.

Peace

I am glad that someone sees the divisiveness in this article

I don't see how it makes the world a better place to try and poke little holes in the lives of those who are trying, at least trying to live their life in a way that will improve the world.

On veganism - at one time I have tried eating vegan for a year and all i can say is I never felt full and I was always cold, no matter how much protein combining I did. I don't think its for everyone. You can idealize the situation but I am not going to eat a diet that my body cannot handle. I eat local, organically, and on occasion, grassfed beef and the eggs from the free range, organically fed chickens and ducks that we keep in my backyard and who are always in good spirits.

I believe that making conscious decisions based on inner knowing, evidence, experience, and the heart is a more direct way to live in harmony with the world than any kind of dogmatic belief structure, including 'taking sides' in a cultural issue, like 'new ager yes' or 'new ager no'.

amen and hallelujah.

Well, being new here I have

Well, being new here I have to say that the original post does seem somehow familiar. Unfortunately there are many in the new age "hippie" movement that are more image than substance. By that I mean they talk a good talk but they don't walk a good walk. Another issue that hasn't been mentioned that I think perhaps should be brought up is the fact that drug abuse is a problem with many people who associate themselves with the new age movement as well. Although I think that in certain instances natural drugs can be obviously used for good often times it is just a substance used to escape responsibilities and to escape a myriad of things including life in general. I have first hand witnessed the ups and downs of a person addicted to pot. Although it may sound funny to some, the person in question was a little out of touch and tended to lose memory and motivation as apathy eventually took over.

As far as diet is concerned I have to agree with the notion that a vegan diet is one of the smartest moves a person can make. It does so much good at the personal level but also, it does a lot for the environment and the planet. If done properly, (Don't forget about Dre or B12! : ) it is an extremely healthy diet and is so much more sustainable than a meat eaters diet it's ridiculous.

Also, just one more thing. I do believe that a big part of being able to truly help others is to tackle your own personal demons and then by freeing yourself you begin to grow to a state of maturity and happiness which allows you to truly and unselfishly help and heal others.

Until next time, Peace and Dove! Thanks for reading my first post on here, hopefully there will be many more to come.

I am quiet

Until approached, I speak when spoken to. People that go around and try to change people are no better than the oppressive government of the new world order trying to enslave people. The wake up call will come from nature, not a bunch a hypocritical new agers. it will come from scientific discovery, not late blooming pseudo hippies. Just let these people be happy and when they try to push something on you, simply overwhelm then with intellect. Intelligence quiets even the loudest of talkers.

"in order for there to be order... there must first be disorder"

How the hell did I miss

How the hell did I miss this? Dang!

You just got like a thousand points in my book. Kudos, man.

Two points

I like this article, it really gets straight to the thick of it.

I just had two notes that it inspired in me:

First, "Do I heal myself, or the world?" The question of projection. Peggy Holman said something that really struck me; She said: "If you have an issue that might be personal, -- raise it, because you might not be as alone as you feel you are." I think it's really important that, while, "yes," the person may be projecting, they should still voice what it is that's going on with them, and then other people who may know more, or further, can come and participate and/or respond. It is hard to know in chaotic situations where the correct view is, and I just choose to trust the flow of events, in general. I would rather people participate, than bottle up.

Second: If you want to see a really good example of a New Age community where people have responded to these 3 problems, -- check out the Federation of Damanhur.

The way I've thought of it,

The way I've thought of it, is that dealing with your personal issues is what actually helps the rest of the world. I mean even if you think your intentions are good, if you have some deeper problem with yourself, then that's always going to play a part in how you see and interact with the world. Then without even realising it you wont be helping as much as you want to or think you are.

Wanting to help is always the first step for everyone, but realising that the best way to do that is by sorting yourself out is a step that's common to skip over for a while for a lot of reasons. Sometimes people think it's selfish and that it's wrong to be selfish in any form. Truth is we need to look after ourselves as much as anyone else.

Hah, sorry, I was meant to just reply to you at first then the second paragraph kind wrote of itself.
