Saving Evolver

The Last couple days I’ve been on the Gaia social network outreaching to people about Evolver. It’s an interesting thing to witness, especially knowing the financial situation with Evolver. Basically what has happened with Gaia is the creator can no longer continue the site because she can’t afford to. There are a lot of things in threads on Gaia that remind me of Evolver. To think that this could happen to Evolver bothers me, I love this place and I don’t want this to happen to it. Here is a quote from the woman that ran Gaia.
"Also, we did try a number of business models over the years–from the Pro tools to a wholly ad-supported site to a paid subscription version to affiliate blasts and partnerships–and only rarely came close to covering the cost of hosting alone, not to mention developer and support salaries. Anyone interested in taking over should know that the amount of additional money necessary to keep the site up each month is not insignificant. (Thanks to the business support we've had here, it's far, far smaller than it was in the Zaadz days, when we were running of investor capital, but it's still substantial and doing something like 'donating' the site to a nonprofit would result in it being more of a burden or cost on that entity than a benefit.)"
That comment from her touches base on a number of things the Evoler community has talked about, almost eerily so. In another comment she responded to the prospect of charging a fee for the use of the website.
"As a background, we launched a monthly subscription option when the site first became Gaia–an ad-free version that came with an @gaia.com email address, but only a few hundred signed up; it barely made a dent in the hosting fees and ended up costing as much to run the program as it did brought in."
Luckily Evolver is a slightly different situation, we have a team of people working 50 or 60 hour weeks on the tech support and creating the site. I don’t know this for sure, but I think a lot of tech support for Gaia was out-sourced. However the Evolver Social Movement membership does need to produce enough revenue for the staff to pay their bills. Our Evolver staff is not asking to be wealthy they are asking to pay their bills.
There is however some hope to be found in the Gaia community. In response to a comment that I posted about the Evolver community I received this-
"There are other websites out there, and i'm glad to hear about www.evolver.net. It is funny though. I never seem to learn this lesson enough: you trulky never know what you have until you're faced with losing it. This site has done so much for me, and I've done little for it. Have you all seen these postings about how if we all gave $1 a month we could save this site? I don't really think thats all we'd need to do…but wouldn't that be nice? I'd love to think that desire + energy equal strength and then that becomes power…and we can keep this 'place' going, all joined together. I'm out here, with my hope…+ more + more+ more. I'd like to think, anythings possible."
It’s very interesting to be witnessing this happening to a community that so many people so dearly care about, when I am face with the possibility of the same thing happening to a community that I so dearly care about. I can’t help but to picture the blogs and threads that would be on Evolver if it were to shut down, I imagine it would be very similar. I don’t want this to happen, I know that no one else that is a part of this amazing Evolver community wants this to happen as well. So what do we do? We can learn from Gaia user’s mistakes. We can get past our personal biased about having such a problem with membership and the supposed “elitism” that comes with it. I have faith in Evolvers, I don’t think we will feel like we are better than the non-paying users. I think we can realize that this membership is a method of survival. It’s also a way that we can help what we love stay in existence.
It isn’t going to just take a handful of people to save Evolver, it’s going to take all of us. Please don’t let Evolver fail, I’m going to do everything I can to make sure it doesn’t from my stand point. And I’m sure that the whole Evolver HQ is going to do everything it can do to make sure that this doesn’t happen to us. Is it too much to ask that us Evolver’s do everything we can to make sure this doesn’t happen to us? I don’t think it is, and I have faith in Evolver’s. If every single one of us paid a dollar a month it would save us, but it has to be everyone, not just a few hundred.

Long-term sustainability
It seems that, regardless of how much one might reject the notion of business, we need its most basic principles in order to sustain those creations that serve us; reciprocity, set fee schedules, a statement of expectation for what we need to receive in return in order to create more of our output. Donate buttons are great, but, having personal experience with this myself, they do very little for sustainability. Sure, a surge of cash is nice when it comes, but most bills are consistent, revolving, ongoing, and surges, let's face it, are not.
Donations are a temporary answer.
Fundamentally, we need to ask ourselves what we are saying here; that begging is more noble than taking charge of one's physical needs? That what we love most should struggle to survive? That consciousness and evolution are somehow above the human experience that requires resources to sustain itself? Perhaps the natural rebuttal to this is that we want Evolver to be some sort of model for what consciousness could look like if we were to evolve beyond money. But, here's the thing: WE, you and me, ARE EVOLVER! Are we living without money? Are we making strides to live on donations? The site merely reflects that which we are doing in our daily lives as Evolvers. It is hypocrisy in its most plain form to expect the hub of our community to do something radically different than the members of it.
No one is asking us to endure sleazy marketing ploys, sales pitches, or psychologically manipulative advertisements. Our power rests in how we each choose to respond to this. Do we wish to support the straight forward approach or shall we resign to only giving our funds to those who utilize such trickery to sustain themselves? Do we wish to support the 'parasites' or the 'probiotics' in the digestive system of the community we inhabit?
food for thought. xo

Thanks Lightning,
With your help, and others in the community, we can really make Evolver.net and its 30-plus regional communities thrive and help create the world we want to see!
All the best,

Probably, a lot of communities go through this. When the first settlers arrived at Jamestown they had a big problem with 'sustainability' too... a community (or a colony) is created through a gift (originally through nature, but in this case it was the creators and those of us who put more time or money into it) in terms of energy, and if that energy just flows out, it is wasted- like in a desert. Most of us (perhaps including myself) have expectations of changing the world and big ideas... we're like the Jamestown settlers; we all brought our shovels and expect to go out in the woods to dig up gold. I think this community has the critical mass to go on but I hope it's creators and members have the foresight to conserve energy, build the equivalent of digital homesteads that are self-sufficient. And recognize that everything takes time to form. There's this vibe I get that everything needs to be done in the next year before power goes out and 2012 hits. I think it would be an achievement if it just went on in it's current form for a year or two (except with enough members or ways of generating revenue to stay up). Are not enough people connecting? Is it not growing? Just some thoughts. Anyway I'm going to sign up for the movement but that's what I hope my money goes to. For myself, my policy is to have a dayjob at all times (preferably a dirty, physically demanding one)... which is why I can join... and on the side I do art and things which give to people for free... to have my foot in the door of that other world so to speak.
And I like the new button too... it encourages donation but sends a message about commitment. That's the way to go... do everything possible.
Cheers,
Rob

For Evolver to be sustainable, it has to decide what it is that it's sustaining.
Is it a Web 2.0 business, or is it a non-profit enterprise?
If it's a business, focus on selling advertising or sell out to a bigger media conglomerate a la the sale of reddit.com to Conde Nast.
If it's a non-profit, file the non-profit paperwork, let people know their donations are tax deductible and write grants etc.
People are happy to contribute to charitable causes, but they're not always thrilled about shelling out to a for profit endeavor when there's so much free stuff available elsewhere on the web.
Pick a model, follow the traditional means of raising funds for that business model, win.

I am grateful for the posts on this topic here. It is not so simple as Web 2.0 vs. Non Profit based on our content. This "project" really is a new paradigm for "business" and for media. We are trying to sustain being the hub that connects all the limbs of the Sustainable movement. From the shamanic to the Burners. The design science through to the alternative banking activists. It is an umbrella that covers so many topics that need a space for dialogue and action. We are trying to save Freedom of exchange when it comes to these ideas mostly. That in turn will save things locally and globally. MJR

Maybe so, but there's a fine line between "new paradigm" and "astroturf", and things can get blurry very quickly.
