The debate on global warming is going in the wrong direction. It does not take a scientist to look up the pictures of the ice caps to see the recession over the last 30 years. Since we can not debate that they are shrinking and weather monitoring has definitively shown and increase in global temperature we have to prepare rather then argue about the cause.
The labels we are taught to look for can be most deceiving. 'whole grain', 'organic', 'wheat', and the diet words, that change with the fads but somehow are seen on the same products: low-fat, low-carb, wheat-free...
Something broad and deep about human nature is deleted now. The evolution of fight or flight has been reversed, apparently. The most obvious crime, call it the Willful Ending of Life, is world-wide in its scale. Yet someone has persuaded us that reports of the earth’s death are greatly exaggerated. So I'm an undergraduate college student in Portland, Oregon. I go to a private institution called Lewis & Clark. This institution is polarized like everything else: it has its purities and illusions, its demons and angels, its devils and gods, its materiality and its spirituality.
The credit crunch and global warming is prompting many to suggest that democratic capitalism has failed as a system. People are looking towards alternative financial systems and governmental systems as potential solutions to these problems. I think that it is not the systems that are at fault but our tendency to frame our decisions in terms of the system. Let me explain.
