One of the longest debated puzzles of life has always been that of destiny and free will; is our future predefined, or can we effect its outcome. Through a paradigm of only cause and effect, these are the two logical possibilities.
I found this to be an incredibly engaging video covering some amazing material. Cosmic radiation and its effect on evolution and the Biosphere. The position of our solar system in relation to the Virgo Cluster and the ecliptic plane of our Galaxy and its effect on mass extinctions and the creation and evolution of species.
It's been speculated that humans may have lost some aspect of mental functioning or perceptive capabilities when we developed spoken (and later written) language. Could we have severed our Gaian awareness?

In complexity theory, it is observed that when a simplified and idealised population reaches a certain threshold of component complexity, a system of negentropic novelty emerges spontaneously and sustains itself at a higher frequency of order, auto-catalysing and self-organising.
Homo sapiens sapiens, with its burden of (partial) consciousness, seems to rely on such dichotomic constructs to generate intellectual and psychological security; Good or Evil, Right or Wrong etc. are not concepts readily or oft questioned in their undelineated essence, insomuch as such oppositions are embedded in our linguistic logic and hence ideaspace.
