On that impossible day when the skyline of New York City collapsed on its southern tip - I watched from a rooftop across the East River - we entered an unexpectedly peaceful eye of the storm. We all fell toward the terrible scene. We fell through tunnels, over bridges.
There is a moment half-way through “Tweets from Tahrir” – the new tweet by tweet running quotation of the Egyptian Revolution – where the reader gets goosebumps. It’s when you realize, “I could do this. I could have my own personal Tahrir.”
It’s the worst of times and the best of times. We now face the power of the ultimate destroyer. Major institutions re-ignite their consumer democracy, showering detractors with greenwashing rhetoric as CO-2 emissions rise every month. There is commitment by leaders to a deadly gradualism. On the other hand, we don’t have a social movement. Have we ever needed one more? There’s no uprising.
I have been having more and more lucid dreams and I am beginning to ask more and more questions. Funny how the path down the rabbit hole works like that. Last night I had one that made me wake up scratching my head.
