Observing the Republic: Blah, Blah, Blah

The other day I had a good friend ask me, "Why the fuck do you care so much about the people in the world, or for that matter what happens in the world?"

"What are you talking about?" I replied.

Simple Pleasures

I really like it when I read something a friend has written, and I can hear their voice.

What are some of your simple pleasures?

I love the sphere (and the North)

The sphere has always been my favourite shape. Early on in my life I had a plastic sphere, about the size of a beach ball, that was hollow. Its entire surface had holes of various shapes - triangle, square, star, diamond - and correspondingly shaped mini-three-dimensional objects. The objective was to take one of these shapes, find the right hole, and put it inside the sphere.

A Response to Evolver the Social Movement, Be Evolution the Social Movement

I would like to begin my post here today by extending a big big thank you to Daniel Pinchbeck, a personal hero of sorts for me. No ego here, just a personal thank you to an individual whom I feel helped to get me on the right track so to speak.

Observing the Republic

I don’t know what I am talking about and don’t listen to a word I say because I don’t know what the fuck I am talking about most of the time.

Vacation

Once there was a man who seemed to be homeless. He dug through the trash for any scrap of food he could find. He walked barefoot in the coldest of nights. He wore old clothing until the last thread and did what he could to get his hands on new clothing when he would dumpster dive.

Remembering Through Sounds

One of my earliest memories is sitting on the front-seat of an old truck with my grandmother. The seat was no longer in the truck, though - it now belonged to a small hill beside my grandparents’ rural home.

Novelty denied

An infant stares courageously into the most phenomenal example of novelty it will ever witness, it is consciousness. To many, this would be down right terrifying.

What Google Teaches Us About Being AW.SM

Ask any blogger, online business owner or marketer what they want most for their website and you are inevitably going to hear a chorus of the same response, "more qualified traffic from Google."

Empathy

A homeless man begged so much for change throughout the day, he gained enough to order himself a nice dinner for the night. It was a cold winter night so he wanted to enjoy his meal inside a warm Café. When he entered the nearest Café he knew of, he was shooed away by the owner because of his filthy appearance.

I Think You Should

I think you should pick up the phone and call someone you love even if you are not sure the message will be received. I think you should stop falling asleep with the company of the television screen. I think you should lie on the kitchen floor and stare at the birds and planes out the window -- it's amazing how similar they look from that perspective.

Year of Balance - Regaining Balance in Troubled Times

Every year I write at the end of the year to introduce a theme for the new year. In the past, there was the Year of Unity and the Year of Hope. These served as an anchor to my writings for a continued theme through the year. These were accompanied by the occasional Wisdom From a Fortune Cookie.

True Value

In order to really begin thinking about alternative economics, and to understand systems and understand our own system to hopefully design a better one, we need to start thinking about value. Any economic system needs to address this question... and I think it's a lot more central to our problems than we think.
