NEW: I started an evolver group called EDUCATION FOR EVOLUTION.... Please come introduce yourselves and join! http://www.evolver.net/group/education_evolution

Many people are focused on the short term goals we need to address immediately. We absolutely need some people to bandage and start to correct what we have been doing, but that's not where we need the most work.

Right now, our children are growing up in a highly materialistic, consumerist society (USA, at least) that is caught up in an economic recession. Many of our young people are worried more about their survival than their education - gang violence, children with children, unavailability of jobs, homelessness.

UltimateIy, I would like to change the institution of K-12 education in the United States, if not worldwide. To begin, I would like to create a curriculum for educating our young people in schools. An integrated, all-encompassing approach that addresses basic literacy & mathematics related to living skills; spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical well-being; local to global personal impact and responsibility; sustainable, simple living practices; the value of active participation in the local & global community. This would be an integrated, thematic approach. No separation of subjects would be involved - teach children as life happens, not in neat orderly units and lessons. Allow for tangential and relational learning to occur, initiated by teacher or student. Teachers need to be taught to lead, organize, and guide the learning and discovery process, not impart useless knowledge from the podium and expect the students to remember what the teacher thinks is important.

Admittedly, this idea is probably not new. There is one other education oriented project on here so far, involving media awareness and sustainability ideas. This is a good start. There is more and more on the web about integral education, holistic education, and other versions of alternative means to educate young people.

Please feel free to write comments and join me in my quest for a better future through educating our children in a better more wholesome manner that better serves them and the planet at large.

I'm interested

yes it's not new but it's not done yet so .... what's the action plan? what do you have so far?

Action Plan

I don't know? I have a degree in art education at the bachelor's level. I don't know what I would need a degree in, nor do I have funds to go back to school at the moment.

I think my best hopes are to find like-minded people in high places receptive to taking drastic changes in education to save our children and grand children from inheriting our current situation.

Perhaps we can gather some support on evolver and move from there?

To anyone interested in education reform as change for the planet, please, comment or add me as a friend!

Perhaps I will start an evolver group on this topic...

Thank you for your interest.

Namaste & Happy Holidays!

cool idea

The education system in America is hurting, that it doesn't ask much of a students questioning/free association aspects of mind is a major detriment. very sad. Whats good is that children don't really learn behavior in schools. School is mainly used to get children to work productively inside a scheduled regimented environment found in most job places. Behavior is learned much more effectively with video and comedy/ music. Usually using some form of subconscious methods, rather than overtly telling how to act or live. Just the way it is, so take advantage with things like youtube, or other video sources. The formal public education system would be an extremely tough cookie, to crack, and even if you did, Kids hate school.

Thanks for your response...

Well, yes... kids will probably always inherently hate school... although I did not... But either way, even if the kids hate it just the same afterward, the schools in america need to change.

In the inner city and even the rich suburbs, where the parents may not parent much due to both parents working or kids parenting kids, schools are expected to pick up the slack... I think that some behaviors are picked up at school through teachers and other mentors and also peer interaction. Children imitate what they see around them... So I guess trying to fix all the students parents is kinda out of the question... but we can change the schools...

The structured work environment is part of the industrial world on which the current education system is based. More and more people are able to find lucrative, productive employment more in tune with talents other than English literacy and mathematical calculations (made so important by the standardized testing); many jobs are available that don't necessarily have a 9 hour work schedule, and might not even mean leaving the home...

Please feel free to react... also, I started a group called Education for Evolution on here... come "introduce" yourself, and join as my first member (other than myself)!
