Why Are We Waiting?

The other day I saw '2012: A Time for Change', the fantastic documentary I'm sure most of you are familiar with. I feel that the ideas put across in the film for it to be 'we' who together create the future is really refreshing instead of waiting around for stuff to happen.
The film made me see that this 'waiting' is what we do all the time. Our society waits for things. I'm in the UK so we're definitely used to waiting for things. If we see a queue, we join it, out of instinct. And we wait for our problems to be solved by someone else, or something else. We surrender our power to these invisible entities that we think, very naively, will look after us. Will present our best interests and like loving parents nurture our lives and well-being. Although I have believed for a while that this is very far from the truth, I couldn't help but wonder why we do this to ourselves, because we do do it to ourselves. All the issues and problems we face are our responsibility. So why do we do it?
I think, although I could really be wrong, that it has everything to do with empowerment and people simply being afraid to be responsible for themselves.
In Britain, we are told that if you do well in school, get good grades, go to a good university and get a good job, then you will be looked after. Pay your dues and reap the benefits. I guess this way would work, if the goal of working hard was for the benefit of every other person on the planet and not the financial and destructive legacy of the state and the corporations that control them. It seems we work for a very select few people, rather than for each other.
I don't know about you guys, but I would rather work a full day down the pit knowing that that toil directly improved the life of my neighbor than a day in a comfortable air conditioned office at the behest of the greedy.
If people were empowered, we would not need government, corporations and charities to look after us, because we can do anything and we can do it now. Now it seems is the only time you've got any power anyway, so why give it up for some lousy bits of paper you can't eat or drink. You can't even wipe your arse with it, it's too rough.
Without the constraint of waiting, we achieve what we always dreamed of in this moment. What do you fellow evolvers think?
Also, if anyone has seen the movie, why does the story at the beginning come from?
Much love

little off topic..
I didn't see the docu your writing about Andy which makes it my comment somewhat off-topic... but also not at all.
In Spain is just exactly happening what most of us are longing for no more corruption and a society of equality. It is all to do with the ideas you mention. It so worth spreading this news... so we don't have to wait anymore..!!

perhaps the question should be why are YOU waiting? I never have been.
