In tribal cultures the shaman (known by many other names) is the person who sees into the world of energy and shares these visions with the community. The shamanic journey is familiar to the people of Siberia, the Q’ero of Peru, the Mangar tribe in Nepal, the Malay tribes of the Southern Philippines, to the Dudun on Borneo, the Russian Voronezh, to the Christians through Jacob's Ladder, the gypsies who journeyed using a tambourine and the Sora of India, among others. As people today look for insight and help from the world of Spirit this is a simple technique to learn and practice. Journeying seems to be innate to humanity.
On a shamanic journey or flight, we may explore the spiritual universe, contact helping spirits, recover lost energy, or discover more about ourselves and our purpose. Speaking with the spirits of plants, rivers, wind, the landscape angels, the elementals, the planets and stars we can tune ourselves with the cycles and rhythms of Nature. Of course one must also care and talk with them in the physical reality as well. Journeying can be a relaxing, peaceful way of communicating with benefactors and teachers and experiencing the wisdom and of Spirit.
You don't have to be a shaman to journey. Many people learn to journey because it is a tool that can advance their own personal growth. It is beneficial to learn to journey with a shaman who can help to protect individuals in the group from negative experiences. One can eventually use it to heal others as shamans and healers such as Edgar Cayce did. It is not ethical to do any healing work, or even observe others, without their permission. Shamanic work and journeying is often enhanced when in community. There are specific things that should be learned and then one can journey by oneself. A shaman undertakes a journey with forethought and heartfelt intent as the shamanic journey may cause shifts in “reality”.

The first journeys are usually focused on becoming acquainted with your power animals or spirit Helpers. These are entities that once lived on the Earth and have volunteered to assist you. They have committed to help others still on Earth and further their own spiritual unfolding as well. That help becomes more available when you become consciously aware of their presence. Power animals and spirit guides can be thought of as the ambassadors of God/Goddess.
Turning to our Helpers for healing and support is a sacred time. One may experience our connection to the Universe and a sense of peace by opening the heart to receive the messages, sights, sounds, feelings and joy sent by Spirit.
If this practice might resonate with you join us for a shamanic journeying experience in Santa Fe on March 4th from 5:00 to 7:00, also on March 19, or in central Colorado on March 27th.

Just a note...
Journeying is not the only thing in which a shaman does, Ive found in working with animist healers that embodyment is much more frequent then a journey out of body, or a flight of ecstasy. I think embodyment is much more frequent and is also very over looked. I have actually never myself witnessed or spoken with any animist traditional healers that journeyed, the most frequent thing I have witnessed is a getting out of the way and being a vessle for spirit to work through, at these times the ego is not intact, but the awareness of the healer exists in an expansive state that is inclusive of other beings in nature that they themselves work with in absolute synergy. This I beleive is much more frequent amoung animist healers and spiritual practitioners.

Thank you for pointing this

Thank you for pointing this out. Of course, you are right, journeying is not the only thing a shaman does.

Journeying is a good way for people just starting the path of the shaman, or even those who may not follow this path, to begin to communicate with their power animals and spirit guides.

At my website, curanderahealing.com you can see that I offer ceremony to the community as well as healing work. Whether or not journeyers want to go further into shamanic practice is up to them.

Meaning

I would like to offer that it is not just the seeing into the world of energy, and the sharing of the vision, but most importantly the acting as a guide to discern the meaning of the experience. Helping to put the experience, the healing, or the vision into a relevant, functional, and meaningful context is what allows the experience to reverberate through our lives as we walk forward and carry the medicine purposefully into our day to day lives.

Thank you for sharing AthenaWolf!
