Why, why, why can't I seem to correct my self defeating ways...? I'm having serious trouble leading a healthy, proactive life for myself and the ones I love... My mind craves and accepts things that I know aren't good for me. (unhealthy food, laziness, uncleanliness, etc, etc, etc) I tell myself time and time again to mimic nature's ways; that simplistic, hard working, beautiful methods of living are obviously superior to the unsustainable lifestyle that modern civilization has so readily made available to me...

What rituals or reminders do frequenters of this site utilize to keep the mind focused on a more conscious path?

I'll be out of town without internet for about a week, so please excuse me for not responding right away... I look forward to reading your responses when I get back.

Seems natural

I could have written the same blog. and it only seems to be getting worse with time. I guess that nostalgic view of ourselves can be a little deceiving. Just accept that your life has changed and the challenges your life presents you with today are different than those in the past.

Spreadsheet

I've always struggled to be productive at home. I'm fine at work but once I get home I have a tendency to switch off. I'm constantly trying to improve my lifestyle but have a tendency to oscillate between two extremes of asceticism and indulgence.

I've recently created a spreadsheet where I monitor four things on a daily basis. Positive productive achievements, negative indulgences or slip ups, my energy levels and my mood. I've created a scoring system. I find now that it helps me gradually improving on a weekly basis rather than being perfect slipping up and then going on tilt.

I also find that it is helping me have a realistic view of things like drinking or smoking. There can be no kidding myself now as it's all there in front of me. I can also measure the effects of things like drinking, eating, sleeping on my mood and energy levels.

If you or anybody else is interested I can send you a template. I use open office but I can save it as a microsoft excel file.

Peace

spreadsheet

I would love to have a copy of said spreadsheet, if possible. I'm sure that would help me track so many of my bad habits, and unfortunately they are many.

I'm working my way out of what I feel is a psychically caused pattern of illness, and I'm trying to use as many tools as I can.

Thank you so much

We can start by rephrasing the question:

"Why, why, why can't I seem to correct my self defeating ways...? I'm having serious trouble leading a healthy, proactive life for myself and the ones I love..."

Notice that this question supposes that you CAN'T correct self defeating way. This is a negative thought loop that can keep you from growing and may be the cause of a continuation of habitual self-defeating thinking.
When this thought comes up how about rephrasing a bit:

How can I correct my self defeating ways? I would like to lead a healthier and more productive life!

Now you CAN do it. Maybe you're not sure by exactly what method it will come about but letting the question be positively answerable is half of the way to not being self defeating.

Don't worry or beat yourself up about unhealthy habits. I would go and find some good new ones before getting all worked up about "quiting" things you know aren't serving you.
Get out in your community, volunteer or meditate. See what's out there...I know there is a lot out there...more and more

Mostly start with the thoughts. No more negative unanswerable questions that leave you stuck in the muck!

How to correct

Well I too had that problem and finally I gave in and received Rapid Eye Therapy and it totally changed my life, (and I mean changed!) Whether you have large and deeply rooted problems or you just need to clear some things up it is a sound and safe correction method. It's just a suggestion. Yoga always helps too, always. A steady practice, or as steady as you can manage in these wierd times, will help you overcome nearly any weaknesses you may be observing inside yourself.

Also, please never beat yourself up for any shortcomings. If you catch yourself putting negative words or phrases into you thought stream catch them at once and put a positive spin on it (as suggested by Eureka above) Always love yourself and be gentle and caring. Allow mistakes, they are there to teach you as much as the smooth times.

All the Best!

How to Correct

Energy Psychology (EP), a rapidly growing field, has some interesting ideas about how to overcome "bad" habits, resistance to change. I use to ask myself the same questions you asked.

Like I would go out at midnight and walk three blocks through freezing winter snowy nights to get a pack of cigarettes if I was out. But when I tried to put drinking more water into my daily routine, I couldn't get off the couch to go to the kitchen to get a glass of water. What the heck is up with that kind of self-sabotage?

First of all, words are infused with energy. "Bad" and "Good" imprint our brains so dramatically. I've learned to reframe my buzzword selftalk. Instead of "bad" habit, I try to think "this isn't serving my heat's desires now". Instead of "good", i try to think "this is serving my heart's desires well now."

Anyway, in EP, the idea is that when we first begin a habit, or have a fearful or angry or sad experience, our energy system and brain are imprinted in a particular way. Perhaps cigarettes relieve certain tensions. Perhaps playing computer games give us the "pleasure" of tuning out for a while.

Habits that no don't server our heart's desires are usually habits that relieve some stress or tension, afford us some pleasure in some way. Like being overweight may serve as armor, or a very messy house may feel like protection in some way. These habits have energy imprints, and EP takes the energy approach.

Guilt, shame have nothing to do with it. Here's how I quit smoking using EP. I had to wait until I had the urge for a cigarette, because for EP to be most effective, one has to be FEELING the fear, desire, anger, stress to un-charge it. Just thinking about it isn't as efficient. Whenever I felt the urge, I would to the tapping routine on certain meridians. By tapping on the meridians, the energy charge that is connected to the fear, desire, anger, stress is neutralized, making the habit easy to drop.

Of course, the above is a simplistic explanation. If you want to learn more, google Energy Psychology or go to www.emofree.com.

My 2 cents.

Progress is a lonely path

To make real progress with right relationship to self is to find yourself in a peerless group. The vast majority of people relate to each other in their submission to their weaknesses. Having the strength, courage, and determination to do otherwise alienates others.

The average person does not want change or progress. They want to be validated, listened to, and loved.

If you are really determined to continue with this line of thinking, you should start with the big things like "what do you do for a living?" Is it fulfilling on deep levels of your being? Do you provide a product or service of quality to others and the planet?

If the answer is no, no amount of chasing the little things is going to provide you any relieve from your condition. If the answer was yes, you would not have written this blog.

Love is the law, love under will
AA

It's only a ride.....

My brother Brownie, it is only illusion which keeps you from experiencing a new reality. Your concept of self will dictate what self becomes. You are God, as such, you are the creator of your own reality.
If you tell the universe you are a lazy, sloppy, unhealthy slob, you will become just that. If you tell the universe you are a God, all powerful, knowing and loving, you will become just that. Let me lay a couple of facts about who you really are.

1./ You were never born and will never die.
You are not your body. Think of your body as the little car you ride in when on a roller coaster. You are consciousness Brownie. Consciousness is not physical, it is energy. The consciousness you enjoy has been with you forever and will be with you for ever more. I am the same consciousness as you, we are not separate we are truly one. Every sentient being in the multiverse is the same consciousness as us, we are all one. Our name for consciousness is the same all around the world " I ". Consciousness is energy it can neither be created nor destroyed it is eternal.
2./ The world around you is not physical.
You may perceive the desk you sit at, the computer you type on and your own body to be physical or material things. This is an illusion, our world is made up of energy. The frequency at which energy vibrates is what creates the illusion of physical matter. Our world is best described as a quantum holograph.
3./ Dualism is an illusion. It is only your believe in good and bad which keeps you from loving yourself.
4./ You are God. Great spiritual masters and scientists around the world will teach you every atom in all of creation is interconnected. There is only energy. Everything, all expression, manifest and unmanifest is this energy. Some call it God some call it love, either way this is exactly what you are Brownie.

How does this apply to you Brownie?

If you can come to know these four truths mentioned above you will never ask that silly question you asked to commence your blog.

1./ When we see our life in the context of a given span of years we create angst. We feel we have to measure up to others, which usually means having more than others. If you knew your life to be eternal Brownie, you would not feel so compelled to stuff yourself with today.
2./ You see the world as real, it is most certainly not. This lifetime you are experiencing Brownie is better described as an amusement park ride. The holo-deck on star treck is a much more realistic depiction of true reality than you would ever believe. Your body is the seat which affords the experience of the ride, your consciousness is the one riding not the body.
3./ Because you cannot yet understand there is only one, you cannot understand there is only love. Imagine if you loved everything and everyone Brownie. Don't you think your life would change? When you learn that all mass is energy and all energy is love then it impossible to not love everything. Breaking the bonds of fear and hate are crucial in understanding your every expression is love. It is only your false perception of reality which allows pain in your heart Brownie.
4./ When you know yourself as God you will become one with the world. Pain will be replaced with love, you will never look back.

Your messy behaviour is contributing to your inability to see clearly. Clean your home; taking pride in your environment will lead to taking pride in your reflection.
Your body is your temple. How can your mind function properly if you destroy your body. Respect in your body will come as you begin to realise who you really are Brownie.
Exercise your body and mind. Sell your television, instead use the time for reading and physical activity. If you can go without T.V. for a month you will never go back.
Empower yourself, stop crying pathetically about what is wrong. You are God, start acting like it.

Solution; If you are just blathering for attention, then I have obviously been wasting my time. If you are sincere Brownie, then I am prepared to work with you privately by e-mail. If you give me three months of your confidence and attention your life will change forever. When we are done Brownie, I promise, you will never give your power away again.

Namaste, my brother Brownie, I love you. Soar like the eagle into the light.

THANK YOU ALL... keep em coming please!

Wow. First and foremost, thank you all for responding so quickly and eloquently... I guess my initial reaction is to perhaps be a little embarassed that some of you think this to be a silly question. But once this feeling subsides, I feel pretty good, after reading 8 beautiful responses to my first blog entry on Evolver... It's good to know that there are people willing to help out there. Sometimes it doesn't feel like it where I come from. In fact that may be one of the problems here. I could probably stand to surround myself with a better environment/people. A move out of my hometown will come very soon I feel...

In response to some comments: I never reffered to myself as a lazy, sloppy, unhealthy slob... I am actually fairly healthy , I just tend to be on the unmotivated side and really enjoy a big meal of savory meat, carbs, and fats over veggie meals, which I know to be better for my body and mind... Zezt said it well -

"Try and sit still in a quiet place, in nature, or where you live. Now.....allow yourself to be come relaxed and with eyes shut FEEl your body--how it feels, and picture it like you are going on a journey all over it wherever you wish. See how your arteries are like roots, and/or branches of trees, and how UTTERLY AMAZINGLY compex they are, and how they carry OXYGEN to all parts of your ORGANISM."

-This paragraph makes me really appreciate my body... A beautifully prosed trip through the utter complexity and godliness of my many organs and cells. This makes me want to love my body and treat it as such. It makes me feel like my body would even respond to me loving it and love me back! woww. that's a thought I've never had! Thanks for bringing that out zezt...

Also, I (almost) do enjoy my line of work. Although we have just begun and are not quite reaping the response we expected from the seeds we've sewn, I believe that through the evolution of our ideas and practices we have the ability to do a lot of good in the public mental/spiritual world... Perhaps this initial lack of response to our efforts is dragging me down a bit though...

I think that my initial question was termed in a self-defeatist manner because that is how I have been feeling lately. Eureka's response of "How can I correct my self defeating ways? I would like to lead a healthier and more productive life!" would put me in the driver's seat so to speak. Thank you for that obvious correction needed in my thought process... and you are right about finding new healthy habits instead of trying to just quit the old ones.

As McGarr suggested, I'd begun putting together a spreadsheet/daily schedule of sorts a couple months ago, and never finished it... Perhaps if you could email that to me McGarr, I could add some elements of it into mine... I'd love to look it over. My add is in my profile...

Also to add to the spreadsheet are questions to ask myself at different times of the day, like Dust23 suggested:

"keep note, in the log possibly, of how you feel when you're doing the indulging activities and how you feel when you aren't, so you can ask yourself objectively why you're doing them if they aren't filling the sense of un-wholeness that you are most likely trying to fill with them."

I do ask myself these questions, but only in my head where they can be easily masked over in a minute or two... Perhaps crystallizing my thoughts onto paper and having them physically to look over later would be beneficial... thank you, I think that this blog and comment sections are doing the same thing for me right now...

IAMGOD... Thank you more than I can respond to right now, as my hands are getting cramped... I would love to get in touch with you when I get back in town after Burningman... You're right, we're all Gods of our own bodies and minds. I'll keep this in heart for the next couple weeks and see how it goes...

I asked about your rituals or reminder systems, to which many of you responded with great ideas... Thank you for this... Please keep them coming... I think that just hearing a real person advise me on something personally, although perhaps I've heard the idea before in books or the Internet, really has an effect on my psyche, as I don't usually ask these type of questions to others in my daily life...

I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I never write openly on the net, and I don't know what I expected in response to my questions. I guess I just wanted some people to talk to about what I believe to be a serious mental roadblock of mine... I just want to know that there are good people out there that actually care about me and want me to do well... because I care about others. I want to see everyone on this planet and all plants and animals healthy and thriving as well. My work tends to deal with big planetary consciousness issues, and I can't seem to guide my own consciousness sometimes... Perhaps it's just gonna take some more loving attention to attract better things...

Thanks again everyone. Your caring responses are priceless to me right now...
Talk to you in a week or so.

Dual Belief Systems

Hello Fellow Traveler,
You are being tossed about by the stream of thoughts that are being generated by conflicting subconscious programs, and fundamental confusion as to who YOU are. The Lower Self only identifies with the embodied personality and the embodiment experience, which is just a very small part, a sliver of the real, Higher Self-enSouled Spirit which is the authentic YOU. Dual belief systems, especially when they are not in alignment, place you in a no-win situation of constant suffering. If you read The Voice of Knowledge by Don Miguel Ruiz, who also wrote the Four Agreements, you will recognize your predicament and have a strategy for changing the unworkable, faulty subconscious beliefs that are running your life through these negative, self-denying, self-sabotaging, self-destructive thoughts. I too, am a practicing spiritual healer combining spiritual healing, vibrational medicine, hypnosis, nutrition and intuitive work. You can visit my blog if you'd like to find out how the process of self-transformation works; www.ajnira.com but starting with The Voice of Knowledge and some of the great comments posted here, you are on your way.

Blessings,
Ajnira

I want to throw my two cents in to.

for me, replacing good productive healthy activities with bad ones is a matter of euphoria. When the euphoria of the good behavior outweighs the euphoria of the bad, I'm capable of reconditioning my habits. There is no incentive for me to change my ways if there is no inner reward. So the main thing I do and am always reminding myself to do is be conscious of what makes me feel what. And I then try to follow the healing and healthy path...whatever that is in the moment...sometimes that means being rebellious. Easier in theory for sure, but that is just because life is typically two steps forward and one step back when it comes to progressing our dreamy lives...especially deep personal progress away from destructive habits..........

Yes yes

I use to put it like this: when the pleasure no longer compensates for the pain . . . but I'm finding that isn't true all of the time. Still, I've managed quite a bit of behavior change in the last decade. I also used to say my ideal world was a socialist utopia with a bad side of town . . . because sometimes I just need to go to the bad side of town. Oh well, I guess perfection means one is ready for the next life form.

I love how this turned out

I think the bottom line of this would be that this wisdom, once it has changed your life, must be told to others people in need to change their life like yours has been changed. The most rewarding action one can do is helping others.
I know some people who feel good right now :)

my turn

Okay, firstly, I want to say how great it is to be in a community with people who offer such wonderful support to each other. I also think that some of the things that people have said are wonderful and should all be taken into account.
For myself, very recently I learned the importance of the material and the carnal. I have always been very spiritually and intellectually minded, sometimes maybe a little too much. I have found it has caused a negative feeling in me for the times when the baser instincts kick in (ie:laziness, frustration, anger, lust, etc) Lately I have been learning to give these things their place, and not to neglect the energy in the lower chakras. By doing so, not only have I found more enjoyment in the simple things in life (always a plus) but also that my own magic (energy) has increased in purity and effectuality. Harmony and balance must be achieved in all things. You are a spiritual being in a body and that body has needs, don't deny them completely or it will become an enemy that you cannot defeat.
You need to find the balance for yourself. One way is to allocate time for various activities, yes, even a time to be completely lazy. If you have trouble sticking to a schedule or getting yourself off the couch when it's time to do something, ask a friend to call you at certain times to make sure you're sticking to what you set out to do. When it comes to diet, I find that if unhealthy food isn't in the house, I usually won't eat it, and if the craving is strong enough to make me go out for it, then my body probably needed a little junk, which, in moderation, isn't bad for you.
I hope I was able to offer some practical advice. I'll admit, I need help with this myself sometimes...then again we all do...we're all human.

it could be

It is most likely that you have simply gotten comfortable inside the system that the government has offered and provided you with since your birth, but we all have a hard time changing, whether what it is in regards to. Change is a natural thing but I believe the powers that control this world have made you rely upon the ease of a specific lifestyle. Of course it is more convenient, all you have to do in order to be provided with food (however unhealthy), water, power, etc is to contribute to the system by working jobs that need to be filled within the system.

I heard about this guy, I guess he's a friend of the family, but he lives out in the woods in a cabin, in a SELF SUSTAINING manner. This is incredibly interesting to me. I find myself still distracted by TV sometimes or find myself eating stuff I know I shouldn't. I would have honestly have loved to live in North America before the European system got to it. Would have loved to live with my ancestors in the Cherokee tribe.

It's just like quitting smoking, which I am also currently trying to do. You have become used to the way you do things. All you have to do is stay focused. If you give in and drink beer or eat mickie D's, don't worry, just try to eventually change. Eventual is better than never.

Peace to you.
