The New Age Is In Danger Of Being Stillborn

This sounds like an unbelievably negative statement, but it’s not. It’s a critique of the state of play in our current evolution as a culture, as individuals and in the wider scheme of things. The New Age is in danger of being stillborn, of dying before it has ever gotten off the ground, of being destroyed before its time.
Now there are those of you who might think that outside forces are conspiring to destroy it, but I can guarantee you that the greatest danger comes from within, from some of those who believe they are working for the furtherance of the New Age. The danger is from within.
It seemed so promising in the mid-90s. The New Age was naive and fresh and young. Now it seems darker, more jaded, prone to complete collapse somewhere around 2013 because of our attachment to fear and literalism.
Let’s take a historical case. The last time a World Age was born was around 2000 years ago – yes, we’re taking the really long view here. An obscure Jewish prophet from an obscure Galilean town was executed for sedition against the Roman state at around the same time that the Lamb of God sought to turn into the Fisher Of Men. The notion of a single individual dying for the sins of the whole of humanity is a profoundly moving one, and the idea that Christians all over the world even today shed genuine tears for the suffering of their God is beautiful indeed.
But within 300 years of this act, the community of the faithful had divided into Gnostic and Catholic, each despising the other, and both evolved into harder and terser forms (the Catholics became more dogmatic and literalist, the Gnostics became the Sethians who pretty much despised the entire world). Catholicism won out, and brought back Zeus’s fiery thunderbolts from the previous World Age, and the great promise inherent in Jesus’ magnificent immolation was snuffed out. It took 300 years all told.
Let’s for a moment realise that if the Gnostics had won out, it would probably have been the Sethians who took the reigns, and Europe would likely have still become the spiritual desert it eventually became in the medieval period. But I digress…
Our current New Age appears to be in profound danger of faltering before we reach that crucial date of 2012. Here’s why.
There are some who believe that 2012 is an important year, the best chance in 2000 years of genuinely evolving into a transformed consciousness across the world. There are others who believe that 2012 represents the greatest danger, since it means fires, floods, pandemics and great calamities will prevail over humanity, and that those who die “will die because they cannot handle the new energies coming into the world”.
Many people believe both of these at the same time. Let’s ignore for a moment the tremendous callousness of that last statement about those who die, which was a quote from a spiritual teacher who best remain nameless, and focus on the 2012 panic. Fires, floods, pandemics, earthquakes and so on. This is simply a replay of the old World Age, in particular, that part of it entitled The Book Of Revelation. One reads some of the dire predictions from New Age texts and it seems all we need to do is identify the Four Horsemen and the Great Beast and we’re there bang in the middle of the Christian Rapture.
These calamities will not come to pass. Will not. Come to pass. Every word that is spoken of them focuses what should be positive evolution for the future onto old ideas which we can see have outlasted their welcome. The notion of a Grand Apocalypse is now well over 2,500 years old – does it really belong in our modern world?
(For the record, the burgeoning swine flu epidemic might seem to contradict the above, but we’ve been overdue a new strain of flu since the 1980s… this is simply nature doing what it always does: evolving and exploring. We may as well say that 1968, or 1918, or the 13th Century were crucial years spiritually too…)
So we can entertain literal apocalypses if we like, but this is us becoming lost in the labyrinth when we should be preparing to build, together, a beautiful mandala for the New Age. Don’t you think many of these fears are simply fears and archetypal demons coming out to be exorcised? Don’t you think they should be taken as they are – archetypal, not literal – and thus be exorcised? It seems there are too many people willing to drag them into the New Age because, well, fear sells. It sells books, it sells papers.
McKenna’s original idea in 1996 that 2012 was a time of spiritual evolution for humanity – and this idea *is* McKenna’s, by the way: it really has little to do with genuine indigenous Mayan thoughts on their own calendar system – is a profoundly beautiful one. Let’s focus on that and leave the Bible where it belongs: in the last World Age.
The second major danger the New Age faces is conspiracy. Here again, do I mean external conspiracies, the Bilderbergers, the CIA, the Secret Cabal of the Illuminati, chemtrails and so on? No, I mean the people who believe they are working towards the New Age bringing their fear-laden, frantic and panicked interpretations of the current political climate into the heart of what should be a spiritual adventure together.
Here, evolver.net is already tainted and one can see this by checking out the News section of the site. Government idiots fly AF1 past the Statue of Liberty and suddenly it’s all Illuminati Got A Plan, Man. Swine flu emerges from a pig farm in southern Mexico, and suddenly it’s all been made in a lab in Austria… if it’s not the CIA or Illuminati, it’s the Alien Lizards, but I’ve spoken about that before.
Now the explosion of conspiracy theories in recent years is strongly indicative of two things: 1. OUR OWN FEARS about a violently changing world. Surely someone has to be in control, even if they are malevolent – utter randomness is far more terrifying than a controlled malevolence. And 2. The basic fact that our governments aren’t really working that well anymore. Capitalism doesn’t look too pretty right now. Communism is all but failed. Social democracy is something that no American will consider, mainly because in Europe where it is practiced it is far too fractious and anally-retentive to be considered a viable political system for the New Age. So we have a big empty hole where a political system should be, and that frightens most people. Better that there’s at least some structure, even if it is a conspiracy or a Cabal.
Regarding conspiracies, there are two basic things to be said. Occasionally some of them are true. But the undeniable fact that can be found running through every modern history book is that in 200 years of supposed operation, the Illuminati have spectacularly failed to stop the march of history. They have singularly failed to make humanity a slave race, or stem the clamour for liberty that has pretty much engulfed the whole world outside China and Africa.
Every major opportunity they have had to take control of the modern world they have wasted. For example: who in the hell let the Internet out of the bag? People who never could meet talking and interacting with each other, a veritable antithesis of everything these folks are held to stand for, and with their superpowers they surely must have been able to do something. Apparently not. I can honestly say that if I was a member of the Illuminati, I would have shot Tim Berners-Lee in 1970. Nip that internet in the bud right there.
I’ve even read on this very site that if the new swine flu takes off, we should not take ‘their’ vaccine because it will be a form of mind control. Five words: prozac in the water supply. If I was an Illuminati member, that’s how it’d be done. The infrastructure is already there (water-piping) and the mind control chemical (prozac) has already been proven to be non-toxic. Forget chemtrails, forget secret vaccines, it’d be anti-depressants in the water supply, every time. Or power sockets: in every home already. Why do we constantly invent the most irrational conspiracies when there are a 100 more viable and practical ways to achieve the same ends?
Now either these are incredibly rich but incredibly stupid people, or they simply do not exist. I’m not sure which to believe, but either way, they really aren’t a threat. Of course, that’s what they want us to believe etc etc, but once you find yourself in a paranoid mindset about the world, no amount of evidence or suggestion to the contrary can convince you. But the fact remains, in 200 years they have done jack. The best you can say about them, if they do exist, is that their hair-brained schemes make Wile E. Coyote look like Stephen Hawking.
To be honest, conspiracy theories encourage a modern-day literal fight against the darkness which again speaks to me loudly of the previous World Age. Siding with God and the Angels against Hell and the Darkness in a literal fight for creation. Now I have heard the voices of angels, and I have also sensed demons, and I have found them to be Within, not Without. I suggest the same is true of these conspiracy fears. They are mostly Within.
The key point about the New Age is that it is not about polarity. It is not about dark vs light, or apocalypses or conspiracies. It is about PARTNERSHIP. It is not about order, but balance of chaotic forms.
Here we all are, asking how can we overcome the malevolence that is of this world (Illuminati) and not of this world (Lizard Aliens) to make a new Age. Why aren’t we asking how we can overcome our archetypal demons and integrate them into our wider personas, spiritual, cultural and personal, to create a psychedelic, partnership society?
These for me are the important questions:
What would a Modern Western Partnership Society look like? How could we take steps to create it? The last great western Partnership society was the Minoan civilisation. I know it well, but there is not so much that we could learn that would fit well into the Modern West. No one these days is likely to climb mountains for an epiphany experience. It’s more likely to be on a dance floor in the midst of an urbanscape or in a field or desert in a festival.
What would a Modern Western Psychedelic Society look like? The last great psychedelic society was the Aztec civilisation, but considering the constant warfare and mass human sacrifice, it seems more like a nightmare than a dream (mind you, I can recommend their poetry as some of the most sublime you will ever read!)
Why are so many who are working towards the New Age so determined that Science Is The Enemy, rather than simply another tool to aid in our development? Why do people associate Science with Being Told what is true and rebel against it instead of subsuming the scientific facts into a greater and more holistic reality? For example, for me, the theory of human evolution is one of the most sublime and spiritual things ever put to paper. Why can’t it be in Partnership with spiritual experience? The New Age will not stand if it isn’t in partnership with science, trust me on this.
Why are so many determined that Rational Thought, a prize hard-won over thousands of years, should be excised from our society? It is another tool, not the trap that many take it to be. Granted, it does not deserve the dominant position it currently enjoys in our society, but it surely still deserves a seat in the partnership circle, along with spiritual, synchronicity, emotional, intuition, sensation, vision, transmission and many others. Partnership means not just the structure of our society, but the structure of our thoughts too, the structure of our humanity.
How are we going to use evolver.net to effect positive change in the world HERE AND NOW? Let’s start talking about that one right now. How are we going to do it? Forget waiting til 2013, the time is now. Forget the Secret Cabal and suchlike, the Supposed Apocalypse, what concrete action can we plan and take to effect the greatest positive change and potential that this planet has seen for nearly 2000 years. The time is right.
What would a Modern Western Partnership Society look like?
What would a Modern Western Psychedelic Society look like?
How can WE effect positive change HERE-NOW?
If we can’t answer these big questions here, and keep spinning around with apocalypto-conspiracies, then frankly, I will go elsewhere. I don’t want to, because I see this place as an amazing potential. But I am alive to serve humanity and effect change that will powerfully affect us all in the long term. And in the long term I mean thousands of years. I think that long term.
Currently the New Age mandala is darkening, and becoming a twisted labyrinth. The only way forward is Through: by accepting these darknesses, not as literal realities projected on the world, but as archetypal sensations within all of us, can we start to step forward past these darknesses towards the integrated realities that wait for us. How can we hasten that process in a healthy and balanced manner? We won’t go forward by rejecting them, or by projecting them, but by accepting and integrating them.
What can we do of the same level of gravity and importance that Jesus did when he self-transformed an Old Age into a New Age by dying for all humanity? What can we do that will have that far-reaching importance?
Think big, people, don’t get lost in the little darkness. What can WE do, HERE and NOW? It's a difficult question. By no means do I yet have an answer, but in a cultural environment where lizards and illuminati seem more important than evolution, no one else seems to be asking.
Asked with much love and joy,
Spoken softly with love,
Peace to all who read this,

I agree with much of this.
I agree with much of this. I have no issue with the issue of conspiracies, in general...many of them, as you point out, do turn out to be true. I don't know about the full mythology that has grown up surrounding the Illuminati, but an at least implicit cooperation of the various world elites against those who create their wealth for them seems fairly plausible. Lizard Aliens...well, I would have to see some pretty impressive evidence to believe that, and thus far I haven't. I qualify it as a 'maybe'...but not a 'likely'.
Just my opinion, though.
Regardless, however, the question is, you are exactly right, what are we going to do, here and now, about it.
A call to arms, I am uncertain of. For one thing, those serving the memes that created the Old Way have pretty much got a lock down on that sort of power. It is their forte par excellence. To paraphrase Sun Tzu, never fight your enemy on the battleground of his choosing. Take him to an arena where you have the advantage. And for another because that is exactly the solution and the mentality that created this world.
To quote Albert Einstein, "You can't solve a problem from the same consciousness that created it."
A creative, step-by-step approach seems in order, to me. Making changes first in my own life, and then branching out from there. I hope to begin organizing people to help the needy within the next couple of months, and in the long-term I hope to begin to purchase property to start a sustainable community.
I think the best strategy is to A) unite as a movement, and become a visible force for good in the world. That gives us moral high-ground, and generally good PR. Then, B) begin to create communities along our principles. If it is truly a better way to live, people will begin to notice (and they will be looking because we do so much good in the world, so consistently).
I believe we should work more to create what we are looking for, and draw others towards it by virtue of its virtues, than focus so much on destroying the old...for it will wither, and die, faster than you would believe without the total support of all humanity.
Secret Cabals, conspiratorial elites, and whatnot may indeed begin to move against us as it progresses, and becomes perceived as a threat. So much more reason to be a visible force for good. First, because it will take longer to get on the radar as a 'threat' if we aren't being openly combative; and, perhaps most importantly, we win the friendship of the populace.
Then we have allies, and backing. Not saying I want to become this per se, but simply as a metaphor: What do you think would happen if any government in the world suddenly decided to 'move against' the Red Cross or the Catholic Church? And why?
Mostly because they are seen to be positive forces in the world, and so any who moves against them trespasses towards all of humanity.
And if there are no such things, then it won't be a problem. ^_^
Anyway, just my 2 cents on this issue. I think you have your finger on a critical issue here, personally.

Bruce......
Don't leave!:-) All of the ideas and conspiracies and words (including yours) that are filling this site are fantastically colorful and irrational and rational and lovely and true and false and right and wrong and ABSOLUTELY needed. Let's watch to see how this EVOLVES! I am completely entertained and moved and curious. This should be a fantastic ride!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some thoughts for Bruce:
On conspiracies:
I think focusing on the illuminati or reptoid aliens, or anything for which there is not overwhelming evidence... is probably unwise, but I'm not going to tell anyone how to think.
However, I think that hardcore revelations about the monetary system and 9/11 especially, are playing a big part in the culture right now. It really shouldn't even be lumped in with other "conspiracy theories". Just in the underreported and hidden news category.
Yes, I'm sure that most of us knows that one guy who knows he has a chip in his head and the government is f**cking with him. Well, I'm the kind of guy that will smile and nod to that him and at least listen to what he has to say.
Some positive effects this knowledge has had on me was first to teach me how little I really know about the world, and second to understand exactly how close to a truly better world we actually are, because I understand the forces that are literally at work suppressing the creative, healthy spirit of humanity (notably the school system, money system, food system). I look at it like a great dam holding us all in.
Whatever the new age will look like, if humanity truly comes together in peace, freedom, and enlightenment it will have to be under a very large tent- a very basic cooperation that easily dissolves into most forms of belief, yet at the same time dealing with some hard realities. We're probably far from that. At the moment we are barely on the training wheels.
Right now it's all about staving off the tendency towards tyranny that is easily observed in human history. That's why people are worried about the government using swine flu to take freedoms and worse, and we should recognize that any serious attempt to further the cause of peace and freedom, and well-being for humanity seriously threatens the hierarchy, regardless of who's in control, and they are not afraid to use force and trickery. In their world, the Minoan way of life is simply weakness. I'm all about the nonviolence, but that doesn't mean I don't have to confront the violence. That makes it a fight one way or the other. Even if it's fought with information.
I agree that the illuminati or aliens are as you say, 'functionally irrelevant'. (Logically, it is impossible for us to actually say one way or the other if we don't have a control planet to compare this one to, to see how we would have fared without them). Theoretically, if there are some arch-controllers, a true believer could easily say that it is all part of the plan, same as with God (usually god makes it into the story somehow). To me, it's just irrelevant. Like has been said, I focus almost entirely on changes I can partake in myself and manifest directly.
So yeah to recap, I agree with much you are saying Bruce, I think we need to focus on integrating here. Its not going to be all harmony and light all at once, we have a lot to untangle. A lot will never be untangled but at least people can agree on certain things through dialogue. There's a distinction between social capital that's bonding and social capital that's bridging, and I think that rounding out the edges of some of the more hardcore conspiracies or belief systems certainly contributes to the bridging capital (the big tent), whereas fragmenting into one camp or another, whether it be 2012 or the New Age or Global Warming or Illuminatis, just results in heavy bonding capital. In other words these groups just reinforce inner bonds. If this website is really going to be an evolver, we probably need to emphasize that bridging capital... while still building up some bonding capital (you still need that to get things done).
Cheers,
Meade
Great blog and well argued.
Great blog and well argued. I have been a conspiracy observer for many years but as I evolve I can see that I need to look within to improve my own life and play a positive role in the evolution of the earth as a whole. If I continue to pay huge attention to all the conspiracies (over which I have no control or hope of thwarting) the best I can hope to get from it is the opportunity to say "I told you so" at sometime in the future. If we focus on evolving however perhaps the genuine and dastardly conspiracies will be redundant in the New World we create.
Hey, this is a great
Hey, this is a great discussion so far! Never ceases to amaze me, the mass genius that visits this site. I get great hope reading through all of the posts and comments, and seeing that so many really are thinking about these issues and trying to make changes that seem appropriate to them. =)
I just wanted to make a quick comment on 'being the Mandala', consciousness evolution, etc...I think it is truly a matter of being 'non-dual', or 'not two'. It is both.
By being the Mandala, I am assuming you mean something akin to "it is all happening as it is supposed to happen", or something like that. If that wasn't what you meant, sorry! =P I realize I may be mis-interpreting you, as I'm not sure exactly what that means to you.
We are the Mandala, but our thoughts, actions, and beliefs are all a part of the playing out or creation of that Mandala. We are the ones we have been waiting for, and we can feel this unmistakable draw pulling us inexplicably towards some future point. We aren't quite sure why, but this world feels wrong. We aren't quite sure why, but we can feel that a better world is possible.
Our feelings and thoughts draw us to act, and through that action we are transformed...and so is the world.
However, while transformation to the 'fourth phase' is, I agree completely, ultimately inevitable...it isn't necessarily inevitable for us. I believe evolution is earned, not simply given away. I believe we are given some kind of choice, and we can choose to say 'no'. That is our opportunity and tragedy.
The ideas of 2012, Apocalypse, et al have always been ones of transformation to me, not death. What we are witnessing is the birthing pains of something new. If you were to walk in on a woman giving birth, and didn't know what was going on...you'd likely think the poor creature was dying, such is the agony of labor.
But mothers can die while birthing, and some children are stillborn. So I believe it behooves us to act to begin alleviating as much of that suffering as we can, and to aid in the process of labor as much as we are able. It is a very uncertain process, and the pressures involved are enormous.
On the wholly Absolute scale you are speaking on, Rudy, even the death of the entire planet would simply be a 'part of it all', so to speak. While I think it is absolutely necessary to touch and experience our connection to that Absolute, and to remember always that scale so that we can act from a place of calm, understanding, and love -- rather than panic, ignorance, and fear -- still I think it needs to be kept in mind that all of that Absolute plays out here on the Relative.
Just knowing that we are the Mandala, while beautiful and encouraging, does little to tell us what to do to create the better world our intuition tells us is coming; any more than parents telling their children, "You'll understand when your older" informs that child of what it truly means to grow up and live a life.
What it takes to 'grow up' is precisely what we really need to get to discussing and planning, because the Manifestation of Infinity marches ever-onward, and big changes/chances are a-coming our way. If you wanna stay part of the Manifest, you must adapt to new parts coming in to being...and learn to do without those that are returning to Source.
Otherwise, the Divine will be quite happy to simply welcome you home. ^_~
I agree completely with your outlook on this, Bruce, I must say. I will have to research the Minoans, as they seem very much in-line with my own general philosophies. I also, however, must sadly agree with Rob that we may, eventually, have to confront the violence. Hopefully, by that time, the infrastructure and power of the 'old guard' will have been immensely reduced. But 'they' have gone after every single other movement of this kind in the history of our species...so it seems likely that they may do so again.
But, again, that is why I am all about just building something better and drawing people to it because it is something better. It brings the competition to an arena that the 'old way' hasn't been very successful in: making people's lives better, richer, happier, and more fulfilling.
They haven't done very well at that at all, in general. They tend to be pretty greedy whom they give their 'luxuries' to. =P
"You must *be* the change you wish to see in the world."
Mahatma Gandhi
A Ha!
So, then, my interpretation is that you are saying "By concentrating on any image, idea, or 'thing', we are only ever seeing our own reflection"?
Nothing in the world I can agree with more. We see the darkness in conspiracy theories, and we are looking only at that darkness which lies within ourselves (whether those conspiracies are 'real' or not). We see hope of a better world, and we are only seeing what we truly are/could be (whether that will ever be, or not).
"You must *be* the change you wish to see in the world."
Mahatma Gandhi
Bruce, you say, "My basic
Bruce, you say, "My basic premise here is that the Illuminati and Lizard Aliens, whether existent or not, are functionally irrelevant to our movement towards the New Age."
Like you, lately I have been bringing up your "irrelevancy premise" to my conspiracy friends as well and understand your concerns. At the same time, I am incredibly greatful for all of my conspiracy friends - they are incredibly lively and thoughtful and dynamic and amazing.
Something I see as important about our "conspiracy brethren" is that they ARE tapping into something in the collective unconscious (maybe they are seeing the collective shadow - and it's ugly and destructive). In your initial post - you mention that we need to get out of literalism - so I say to you, don't take the conspirists literally - take them symbolically. They are verbalizing and symbolizing a part of the collective shadow - and I love them for it - even if I don't always agree - doesn't matter. They are a sign of an awakening - of course this awakening will take all forms/stories/symbols and may be bumpy and crude at times. But I love their passion and their minds and that they care and that they want things to be better - no matter what the cause.
And hell, if you like science and evolution - I'd say the conspirists are fantastic winnowers and furrowers of the social/psycho science bucket of ideas (although in a rather unconventional sense, they are in fact, presenting hypotheses and presenting them for testing - they are the idea generators). For example, it is a FACT that the mainstream media is a mouthpiece for the existing power structure. No conspiracy in saying that - it's literal and it's the truth. I suspect at some point, this idea too was considered a conspiracy theory but is now widely accepted. Science and evolution of thought in action!
I see all of this exchange as so exciting - a literal thought and idea experiment in a magnificent evolving cauldren (and I might add, a great use of the internet). We know that the current power system does not work for the interests of sustainability, cooperation, enlightenment. So, whatever the exact theory states (no one NEEDS to be right) - irrelevancy of the system is the result and more and more people are 'seeing' the relevancy of this truth.
Also, somthing to note:
I was reading the April 2009 issue of Conscious Choice - Chicago and something Daniel Pinchbeck said resonated with me - which I think fits in with this discussion:
"The truth is that we need to make a deep and rapid change in our current social systems and in the underlying models and ideals of our society. It is highly unlikely that those who have been part of the power structure, whether within government or the mainstream media, possess the necessary will, vision or inspiration to make this happen. Also, when we consider the self-serving support for a delusional model of infinite growth on a finite planet, ignoring all evidence to the contrary, our mainstream pundits and politicos have clearly forfeited any claim to authority, and should never be trusted again."
Yes we did....
Rudy, so based on what Daniel P. propses, "It is highly unlikely that those who have been part of the power structure, whether within government or the mainstream media, possess the necessary will, vision or inspiration to make this happen."
Do we consider Obama part of this power structure? Is that even a relevant question to what we are trying to accomplish (Bruce, this brings us back your Q of relevancy)? I beleive it is a relevant question but also an auxiliary question. As we are all certain that many CONSPIRACIES abound on this matter, let's stir it into the cauldron of evolving ideas! What are we going to do now to invoke change? With Obama or whithout him....knowing what he is or not knowing.
One thing is for sure in my mind, Obama symbolically represents a savior figure in the minds of many. WE are projecting this upon him. Without judging it, WHY???????? Are we being brainwashed by the media, or is this some deeper part of our psychic evolution?
So Rudy, as to your Mandala
So Rudy, as to your Mandala comment (that was well put). Is Obama serving as a "mandala" for the collective to project upon?
Howdy Bruce,
You have done a good job of pointing out some of the confusion resulting from our current shift in consciousness. I prefer to call it a shift rather than an evolution, but that is another story.
Your post got me thinking. Like you i have considered moving on. Evolver hasn’t found its voice, but where else can we work this out? This is a good bunch of folks, with some experience with real life changes in consciousness. And so... Free Will, Entheogens and Conspiracy Theory, my first blog entry.

bruce don't gooooooo
Bruce,
I will admit that I don't always agree with you. However, I find your cynical and down-to-earth point of view to be enlightening and absolutely necessary in a forum like this.
You are an excellent writer and I would urge you to please not take your fabulous blogs away. You have made a fan so I suppose I would just follow what you write anyway, but who wants to make the extra click if you don't have to....
Three days before all this craziness came into my life, my boyfriend and I had a conversation about 2012. He said "What do you think is going to happen on December 22nd, 2012?" I said, "The same thing that happened on January 1st, 2000. I am going to have a hangover." Little did I know I would remember uttering that sentence forever.
Anyhow, the point I'm trying to make is, you seem to be an exceptionally intelligent guy and I'm assuming that if you do see evidence to the contrary, your opinions will change and evolve, as will mine. You have offered me much food for thought.
I would urge you to keep an open mind as well, and monitor both sides of the story. And if you leave, ah well, then just leave us a link so we can look at your art.
Good Find Rudy
On the T-shirt that is:-) Bruce, we here are all probably equally if not more relieved about the exit of GWBush. I cried fountains of joy when Obama won the election. His acceptance speech was here in Chicago and all I can say was that the air was electric and peace and love wafted everywhere. HUGE for racial healing - if not on a policy level, definitely on a psychic level. Let us see how it plays out now that our rose-tinted transition lenses are readjusting.
Prozac in the water supply
"Five words: prozac in the water supply. "
The chemical name for prozac is Fluoxetine hydrochloride. You may recognize the FLUO part as signifying 'fluorine', the atomic element that is the most important ingredient in fluoride, with which the water supply of most of the developed world is (wait for it) fluoridated.
So, you were saying?
Hmm ... this is one of those
Hmm ... this is one of those posts where it's very difficult for me to say, do I agree, or not? No doubt you've already sussed out that I'm a bit of a conspiracy nut myself, so I hope you won't be offended that I take it upon myself to defend that aspect of the Movement (and it is an aspect, and a valid one).
I'll start with the things I agree with. We must look within: yes and absolutely! yes. The time for looking to answers from outside leaders or gurus is past. We cannot solve the real problems of the world until we resolve those problems within; there's no point in holding a revolution to unseat a tyrannical government, if deep inside, we're still ruled by our own inner tyrant. Otherwise a 'revolution' will be exactly what the word implies, a turning of the cycle, a return to the beginning, and a repeat of what went before....
Also: I agree, 100% that an integrative approach is necessary. The New Age, Science, Mysticism, the Conspiracy Theories, the whole bit, if this thing is going to work (and it WILL, of that personally I have no doubt) then it has to be fashioned into a bigger tent than any ever imagined. I do wonder at your own attempt to put conspiracy theories beyond the pale. Doesn't that violate the integrative intent you espouse? Because I assure you, there are a LOT of people involved in this movement (which is after all much bigger than Evolver) who came to the movement through conspiracy research and as a result know a very great deal more about this kind of thing than you seem to so ... some humility, perhaps, might be called for.
Look, I could care less whether or not you really think there's an Illuminati controlled by timeshifting reptoids, or whether you think that's just a manifestation of the shadow side of our collective psyche. What to believe is your call and as for me? I don't really 'believe' anything, anymore, or maybe it would be better to say I hold my beliefs lightly. I will say this, though: if integration is the word of the day, if that's what this global awakening is about, then we have to integrate light and dark, beautiful and ugly, pleasant and disturbing, sane and paranoid. We can't turn away from something merely because it's unpleasant to think about. That way lies intellectual laziness, which is lethal to mystic and scientist alike.
In my view the great unsung theme of the counterculture this decade has been the gradual merging of the worlds of conspiracy theorists, new age types and environmental activism ... every aspect of the counterculture coming together to finally form not just an opposition but a real alternative.
So don't be a hater, man. And to threaten to close up shop and go on your way if we don't all fall over ourselves agreeing with you? Sorry, but that's not very open and accepting, now is it? Kind of juvenile, in fact.
That said, I really do hope you stay. Your artwork is beautiful and you write well.
I have been a 'conspiracy
I have been a 'conspiracy nut' myself for some time. At first, it was all really serious (and still is, to a degree)...but I began to notice -- because I trusted no single source, and kept looking for some kind of mutual verification -- that, from exactly the same facts, people were drawing completely different conclusions. So then the question becomes, which version of the 'Truth' to believe?
And doesn't that always end up being the case? As Rudy points out, why do some see the Messiah in Obama, and others the Anti-Christ? Indeed, isn't one the other, depending on which group you claim to 'belong' to?
Various camps seemed to emerge, each 'preaching their own doctrine'...and, ironically, anyone who questions these is immediately labeled, by each camp, as being 'blind and simply following the mainstream'. It is a sort of unquestioning belief that feeds back into fallacy -- as it is only shorn of its absolute statements that any individual idea can be truly embraced (even that one).
Conspiracy theories became, eventually and for me personally, far more interesting as a tool to understand consciousness than current events. This has gotten me in trouble repeatedly throughout the last several years, as persons seem to assume that any conspiracy theory I want to bring up or discuss is one that I personally believe is completely -- heck, even partially -- true.
I remain fascinated by conspiracy theories, and understand that most of them generally have a grain of truth at their core (most -- as opposed to all -- being the key word in that sentence). But, as Bruce has pointed out, it doesn't make that much difference regarding what we should do.
That is where the problem beings to arise. Most (again, most being the key word here) conspiracy theorists I have met want to inform me that every action I take is a useless one, because 'they' control everything.
Even if that is true, who the heck cares? I'd rather go down swinging for the cause, than cowed in the corner of unquestioning servitude. And if enough people make that decision, mightn't we end up winning?
One way or the other, we all need to come together and work towards a better future...or, submit to our new Masters, and stop complaining about it so damn much. ^_~

Emotional-Psychic Stagnancy and the 2012 meme
So much appreciation for that, Bruce. Seriously, somebody needed to say it. When it comes to the issue of "what will happen on 2012" I often find myself within a thread of argument between heaven and earth.
Although there is - as any tuned-in evolutionary can feel/know- a tremendous upheaval in the energetic vibration of our planet, and a transformation, just as the spring season sees energy rising up from the earth, the plants and the animals stretch as with the Qi of Earth moving anxiously towards the sky.
However there is a huge danger right now - recently discussed by Pinchbeck with his usual eloquence in Age of Uncertainty: "I don't know whether anything special will happen on 2012".
For sure "the shift" is as unstoppable and organic as a flowing river, but there is a recognizable danger in over-literalizing the whole 2012 issue. There could be a temporary, or long term, emotional blowback if the more dramatic things people are predicting don't take shape.
As for me, I believe in conscious evolution, but I'm hedging my bets in the mean time. 2012 has very real significance for me, but I don't want to carry any unnecessary burden of anticipation. In Chinese Medicine we call that Qi stagnation.
Evolution happens when we don't have a shut down, uptight or fixed perspective. I'm for open-ness, not ideology. On the other hand, I do have some interesting experience with a Sunni Islamic mystic who had dreams of "the return of Issa" (Jesus) on December of 2012.
This without any apparent knowledge of the Mayan calendar or the other hundreds of prophetic voices on the subject. I take the messianic islamic metaphor of Jesus coming back to lead an army (the Qur'anic version of the story of revelation , by the way) as a metaphor of course.
It seems to me that a lot of intuited information arrives in metaphorical contextualizations. It is possible that the human mass civilization (as opposed to groups with archaic tribal sensibility) is in the early phases of developing a knack for translating. I don't know what exactly is going to happen on 2012, but it would behoove us to open our heart connection to the dance of possibility.
Chibi, I agree 100% with
Chibi,
I agree 100% with what you say. Just because there are conspiracies, some of them old and potentially vast beyond belief, does not mean we lie down and accept defeat. It is simply part of the odds arrayed before us, the furnishings on the obstacle course of existence as it were, and of that merely a single aspect. Consciousness very much and inevitably becomes a great part of it: for many, it is one of their first protracted exercises in thinking about the unseen. Some come that way through mysticism and others by way of math, but it's a realm that, once entered, changes the way the world is perceived forever. And is that not almost the definition of a change in consciousness?
Rudy:
I was most certainly being defensive ^_~. It was a role I took quite consciously, as the Queen's loyal opposition. Devil's advocate has been a role I've occupied much of my life, which is probably why I have a head full of the odd stuff that I do and find myself, here, gathered with others with their heads full of odd things about to discuss with Zanthe here that great big oddity we're all really here to talk about in a meta-contextual sort of way:
Zanthe:
The true conspiracy theorist in me wonders if 2012 isn't all a conspiracy, meant to bring about world religion, to go with world government and world banking and the whole rest of it. What we're living through now is the hype, the marketing campaign, with a great big payoff scheduled for the day itself where we'll all be treated to some kind of celestial light show. Another part of me knows that, in a sense, it almost has to be that way and that at the same time that really is just one way of looking at it, just one filter to throw in front of this multidimensional 'transcendental object at the end of time' (as I think Terrence McKenna put it) in order to get a sense of this thing that we're approaching.
You might also say, that it will in a sense create itself, this moment. The expectation of something exceptional, but otherwise undefined, becoming widespread through the population might precipitate the event, either through the law of attraction, or perhaps just in the sense of triggering a shift in consciousness throughout the population for no other reason than that it is looked for and, en masse, found. Neither of those of course are mutually exclusive, and the lack of mutual exclusivity is of course one of the hallmarks of the massive spike in novelty that characterizes this era. Any manifestation that is looked for, will be found and that will be even more the case as time progresses.
I suppose you might also say this is the point where, if you circle back to the conspiracy theory theme one of the primal dangers of the hobby presents itself: spend too long, look too hard and you risk drawing into your own experience the very dangers you're merely trying to stay cognizant of.
Let me say one more thing: the potential payoff, on the other side of this event, is a dramatically better world. One with world government, world religion, and world peace. Isn't that the same New World Order I claim to resist? Ah, caught in a contradiction, but really it's all about the details. What's planned for us is a totalitarian world banking state with the peace kept by propaganda, mind control and a terrifying military, and a population of genetically mauled remote-controlled cyborg slaves who worship a global AI god and, of course, pay their respects through that Deity's representatives on Earth, a god-like overclass with access to every miraculous technology the singularity has to offer, to whom it matters not if the Earth herself dies for the universe is their playground. That's one future, and it's a viable one but not, for a human, a very attractive one. But it doesn't have to be that way.
World government, world religion, world peace....
If instead of a government we have no government at all; if the peace were that of the anarchy that rises when each rules from within; and the 'religion' an authentic and individual spirituality founded on principles so deep they need not even be spoken, and so are shared and understood by all; if these were our world government, world peace and world religion well then I'm all for it. The spirituality would provide the underpinning of the peace that would allow letting go not just government but the whole controlling dominator mindset that gives rise to it.
Of course, getting from here to there is going to require a lot of individual work and probably some traumatic events will be necessarily to catalyze it all but, that's a big part of the reason we're so lucky to be now, and not otherwhen.
I began reading all of the
I began reading all of the comments and had to take a little break. I just wanted to mention that I enjoy reading/reading about / writing about conspiracy theories from a sort of anthropological perspective. I'm not interested in which ones are "true," since I am not of the mind that we can really know if many of them are, in fact, true. So that is sort of a useless dichotomy to me. I'm more interested (as in the folklore article i just posted abt alien encounters and fairies) in why we have so many conspiracy theories and where they come from. many people do in fact believe in them to be true, even completely contradictory conspiracy traditions. why? i think it stems from the very Modern idea that there is a universal narrative. Postmodern critique has shattered that notion, and now we have a multitude of moebius strips of truth/non-truth instead. this all is probably why pynchon's "the crying of lot 49" is my favorite book! either the conspiracy is entirely true or she's crazy. or maybe both? or maybe there is overlap? the reader never finds out. the individual living a life and exploring truth and knowledge may never get the answer, either.
just rambling on the nature of conspiracy theory.
I focused on the 'prozac in
I focused on the 'prozac in the water' comment because, despite the difference in chemical formulae there are a lot of people who believe, and not without evidence, that water fluoridation is carried out more for purposes of mind control than dental health. The first locations to practice fluoridation were Nazi and Soviet prison camps, in order to render the inmates docile; those programs having been apparently successful, they were implemented on a wider scale, in order to subtly damp down the minds of entire civilian populations. So when you said,
". If I was an Illuminati member, that’s how it’d be done. The infrastructure is already there (water-piping) and the mind control chemical (prozac) has already been proven to be non-toxic. Forget chemtrails, forget secret vaccines, it’d be anti-depressants in the water supply, every time."
I was merely trying to point out that antidepressants in the water supply is exactly what is, in fact, being done. Yes, sodium fluoride is a much cruder compound, but prozac isn't magical and despite it's high tech gloss actually is pretty toxic, itself, with most of its 'antidepressive' effects arising from the brain damage caused by the presence of fluorine. So, you were actually kind of close to the mark there, without realizing it maybe.
As to the combative nature of my initial posts, well, yes, guilty I suppose. That's a personality thing and perhaps it wasn't called for in which case, I apologize. The primary intent was to offer a spirited defense of a way of looking at the world that has proven invaluable in prodding me to question without mercy every notion about the world I'd ever acquired. It's also a lens that, slipped over one's perceptions, throws various anomalies in current world events into sharp relief. With practice, the use of this valuable cognitive instrument renders the man behind the curtain gradually easier to discern ... and with any luck, one becomes less easily manipulable.
At any rate, insofar as I dangled bait in front of you, you completely failed to jump for it and that's one of the things I love about this network.
The kind of "nut" that
The kind of "nut" that realizes that "only words softly spoken will take root, in their own time". Or that 'evolution is a process of transformation, not exhortation". Or, hell, one that just understands that they may be the ones at fault.
If your task is to be acknowledged as 'correct', and to have others say, "oh, you were right, and I was wrong" then it does seem like back-pedaling.
But if you are actually trying to get a point across to someone in a manner in which they will actually give it any real consideration (unless, of course, they are already an Enlightened Master), then you want to sneak past the Ego so that Spirit might hear you without interruption.
It's much easier to discount an idea that has a personality attached to it, by simply discounting that person. But ideas themselves have a way of rumbling around in our heads until we forget where we heard them. It is, at that point, that we begin to believe it is our idea. It is at that point, divorced from a person we can decide we do or don't believe, that all ideas are truly taken seriously and really examined for their actual worth.

The only 'pinch' I was
The only 'pinch' I was feeling was the desire to defend someone I consider a friend from what I felt to be an unnecessary personal attack.
And I must disagree with your take on 'be the change'. It is among the most powerful ideas I have ever encountered, and is almost single-handedly responsible for me making the shift from "stoner arm-chair philosopher", to one who meditates daily, grows his own food, works steadily towards a 0-waste household, attempts -- with varying degrees of success...I am an emotional person, and make no claims about my level of development -- to be kind gentle, and compassionate towards others, and does anything possible to help those in need.
So, I shall continue to use it as my signature, in the hopes that it will aid others similarly. Unless many of you feel it is irritating? To irritate is not my purpose, merely to remind that our words here mean little if they do not translate into concrete actions and choices within our own lives. But I will remove it if I am in any way offending many of you.
And I happen to believe, while it only a manner of speaking and isn't meant to be taken literally, that you can sneak past the Ego to speak with the Spirit. I can witness the phenomenon in my own mind: when people use one course of rhetoric, the idea will sound crazy, or scary; said in another way, it can sorta make sense...and stick there.
I see it all the time in myself in numerous variations. One way 'gets my dander up', and the message ends up lost, or associated with a negative personality that allows me to discount them both. Said another, that doesn't happen, and it is easier for me to 'just listen'.
No one is the same, obviously, so I can't be sure...but I imagine it is similarly true in others.
Certainly, I have had far greater success in communicating ideas and getting others to see from my perspective since I came to understand it.

Thanks nuts!
Hello Bruce and everyone! After the most enlightening read-through of all these comments, I'm still struggling with the notion of a partner-ship society. Usually, I am the best at imagination! Well, pretty good...and I really think that this situation calls for a little starry-eyed imagination.
I keep thinking about Bruce's statement, “The New Age Is In Danger Of Being Stillborn” and I keep calling up the images of a mother deer coaxing her wet faun to get on their shaky legs and start walking. Though I do not know if it's an image from the point of view of the mother, or the child....both? It still seems to me, sadly, that personally, I am outside watching things happen inside, in reference to this whole awakening. I feel like I still would like to take some sort of action in the “birthing process” of this new consciousness...but.... am not quite there yet.
Curiously enough, I really enjoyed what moon was saying,
(If we can learn to follow the Tao, practicing non-action, then nothing remains undone. This means trusting our own bodies, our thoughts and emotions, and also believing that the environment will provide support and guidance. Thus the need to develop watchfulness and quietness of mind.)
I really, super upper like the idea of acting from a place of mindfulness, and not from the place of necessity or desire, and I feel like perhaps most of us on Evolver have a desire to...well, evolve. Maybe I'm just projecting that?
Just a shot in the dark here—If I were to envision a partnership society, or global peace-utopia, it would be fucking beautiful!! And it would have to get started through the healing of deep-gnawing wounds in our collective unconscious. My personal belief (for now) is that when you have such polarities like conspiracy-theorists and already-enlightened masters engaging together, you have the possibility for acceptance and unity; healing, essentially. Perhaps we can have more fun when the reptile lords start to join Evolver? Think of the collaboration!
as I said, I'm still not there yet...though I can definitely feel something brewing in the coffee pot. :) Thanks so much you guys!
Yeah, man. This blog
Yeah, man. This blog epitomizes the reason I come to this site. The blogs themselves are great...but it is the interaction aspect that really puts a shot of nitro in the transformation process. =) Very satisfying.

looking back...
Three months have elapsed since this discussion, but for me it stands as a telling testament to the power of open discussion... reflecting on my own participation, it is clear that , to say the least, I was so wrapped up in my new-found perspective, that I was completely overlooking the 'me' that was making all the 'wise and perspicacious' comments... projecting that omission on others, I acted as if I were not being afforded due deference and finally resorted to telling my story about being 'enlightened,' presumably to establish my credentials, so that everyone might realize they were in the presence of absolute truth!... such arrogance seldom goes unrewarded... I continued up-leveling my demands and outrageous cries for attention until I finally succeeded in getting myself booted off the site... and wonder of wonders, nobody seemed to even notice I was gone... it is now crystal clear that I was nowhere near as 'enlightened' as I thought I was in the glare of the first light of my awakening... it is now crystal clear that I am simply what I am an earnest, sometimes lonely, seeker on an evolving path... like everyone else here... no better... no worse... but perhaps, a bit wiser for the experience... interesting that I should be communicating this to what is presumably an empty theater... perhaps the ghosts are listening... doesn't matter, I am no longer looking for applause...
