A few years ago I purchased (a rather expensive) set of bamboo utensils. I have never
ironcally used them.. they sit in my car.. ready for the next event....

But then I thought that it would be great to have a wooden bowl to bring as well.
(I got this idea from going to Renaissance fairs and Pagan festivals). I drilled
a small hole in a wooden bowl to where I could attach a string or some similar item.

To then carry it around at a party....

but then I also had an idea about when I go out to dinner and have leftovers. They
always serve you styrofoam!.. Drives me nuts. I started to think I should just bring my
own rubbermaid containers!.. (but was that too tacky?)

Then I found TIFFEN ware. (http://www.to-goware.com/store/cart.php)

The metal lunch containers used in India. They use those even for takeout. (If you
know you are going to pick up some take out.. bring that for them to put it in!)

and THEN.. I thought..

I could gift folks with reusable bamboo ware.. Sew up little pouches myself. Buy
the 5 dollar bamboo utensil set...

and then also buy some "cheap" wooden bowls (and or plates) and make up
NICE little bags for them.

Gift these to your friends to encourage them to reuse.

If you want.. and have the money you could buy the TIFFEN ware (15-20 dollars )

So.. if I can get it together.. that is what I am going to do. I need some motivation
to actually USE mine myself.. so the more folks doing this.. the more fun and
more likely hood others will too!

ALSO .. think about how much $$$$$ restaurants spend on styrofoam/takeout containers
They probably would thank you too and eventually could lead to cheaper prices.

They could (like coffee shops do) sell reusable containers for take out!

I don't see how this could be a big problem for any Health thing.. but that might
be the ONLY concern... but what do coffee houses do?.... folks might
bring in not very clean travel mugs.... no one has died.

So .. spread the word!

Stainless Steel Utensils for C$ 2.00

I found a set of 6" stainless steel (18/0) utensils in a Dollar store that I carry around in my fanny pack (fit perfectly). They cost C$ 2.00 (Canadian) and are actually labelled for children but work excellently for me.

Hope you found your TIFFEN

Hope you found your TIFFEN ware locally otherwise it's gonna take you a lot of dinners out before you offset that carbon footprint.

One more note... if you're

One more note... if you're trying to be environmentally friendly you could grow your own bamboo... or at least not get them from to-goware because they ship their snazzy bamboo utensils from China.

i really like this idea.

i really like this idea. i've been organizing potlucks as part of building the tribe/collective thats one of my personal projects right now, and i always encourage people to BRING utensils & plates. i have my camping ware that lives in one of the kitchen crates - always a little horrified to go to festival and see people w/'disposable' cutlery etc.

i can see that if youre gifting it you might want something a bit more aesthetic, but really, there's no reason you can't find old/interesting/funky mismatched cutlery and bowls at a thrift store. Making a kewl carrying pouch for them could be done from 'recycled' material as well - some thrifts sell fabric remnants, but old placemats or tablecloths could be repurposed to it as well.

Ha ha, maybe i will have my group do a craft day to all make their own, like making situpons back in scouting.. ;-D
