Cynicism-the worst Meme of them all!

We live in a world entirely made up of Meme’s. What is a Meme you might ask? A Meme is an idea that has been permeated through culture to the point that it is consensually accepted as reality; accepted as “the way it is”. This my friends is an unacceptable way of living our lives. Most people can point to a large number of things that are wrong in today’s world; that’s the easy part. Try pointing to ways that today’s world can be improved upon. Activism you might say? Writing your Congress man? Donating money? I’m sorry to say that these things provide temporary changes at best. They are all performed within the constructs of the already established Meme’s of society. To cause real change we need to attack the Meme’s; attack the core of societal belief’s that are fundamentally flawed. So how do we do this? Where does change begin?
Well the difficult part of this is to change the Meme’s that you have sold yourself about your own personality. Too examine the idea’s that have made up your personality, the Meme of “Such and Such”. One all too common Meme that I seem to be experiencing in many of my good friends is Cynicism. What exactly is Cynicism? Well here is the definition from dicitonary.com “An attitude of scornful or jaded negativity, especially a general distrust of the integrity or professed motives of others.” I have a different idea of Cynicism. It seems too me to be the ability to see things that are wrong with other people or the world in general; but the failure to recognize them as Meme’s, nothing more than idea’s. A person that has become a Cynic has failed to separate themselves from the things that they are so judging of. They spend all their time pointing at the things that are wrong with the world without addressing the causes. It seems that somewhere along the ling Cynicism also became the backbone of humor. That this attitude has developed that “all you can do about it is laugh”. This seems like a defeatist attitude too me.
I have heard a lot of people express the belief that being an Optimist in today’s world is just being naïve. Well I actually feel that being anything but is naiveté’; based on a lack of understanding or the way culture works. Where did all of the societal Meme’s come from? It wasn’t stone tablets delivered from “god”. They came from the people like you and me. In a world made up of idea’s humanity acts as the architect. There are millions of new ideas every day. Our culture thrives on the continuation of new idea’s that keep us going. Corporations, Governments, Laws and Religion are as much an invention as electricity is. What if we found a better source of power? Well I hope I’m not the first to break this too you but we have! We also have better forms of Government, Laws and Religion. So why haven’t these new idea’s taken hold of society yet? I feel a great deal of the reason why is that we are stuck with the Meme of Cynicism. Too many people see these problems; without seeing the possibility of change, when there is so much of it. Look at how much the Meme’s are changing in just this country. We actually have a plan on the table for universal health care! Members of Congress are actually suggesting transparency of the Federal Reserve. I don’t believe that either of those bills are the best things possible but they are better than what we have now; or at least they are a far cry from the state of things just a year ago. We are in a world of change and we have never had a better chance to change our societal Meme’s as dramatically as we do now. So drop the Cynicism, give Optimism a shot and help our world change for the better!

YES!
I could say so much, but because I so thoroughly agree, I'd just be re-writing your post! Freedom starts in our mind, the rest is just detail that comes together the moment we chose to allow it to. Thanks for this, good heart medicine for us all :)

Optimism and Cynicism
I don't normally think of cynicism as a meme, but I suppose it can be carried in certain cultural memes... a lot of which are floating around right now.
It think South Park pretty much sums it up for a lot of what people think these days. Yes, it is fucking funny but it leaves a bad taste in my mouth afterwards. And by that I mean a metaphorical bad taste in my mouth.
Balance, Balance, Balance. We need some cynicism in our lives to avoid being self-righteous douchebags, and trusting things that we probably shouldn't trust. But lets not take it too far and become self-flagellating self-hating worthless members of the human virus.
war and peace...
911 truth is a great example, some of my friends call me cynical and pessimistic for focusing on it or even giving a shit about it. Because the government would never be up to stuff like that... there's too many good people in the world. And one friend of mine says, "I just don't want to think every time I drive past ground zero that the government did it". Optimism.
Other people choose to be 'Optimistic' about the economy, and that there was just a little bit of corruption (those CEO's and their bonuses!), and Obama really cares and is cleaning it up, and bank bailouts saved us from ruin.
Sure, maybe 'balance' isn't exactly the right word... but I think it has something to do with it. Maybe another way of putting it is 'everything in it's right place' or 'work with what you've got'. Balance is really a relative term and it fizzles out when pushed to absolutes, as you pointed out.
I do believe in looking at everything equally as information, rather than focusing on a 'bright side' or a 'dark side'. And what you do with that information is another matter. It's your creative act, that part of the universe that you get to control. I don't think it's optimism to want to go on living through the darkness. I don't think it's optimism to love other beings and want to help them, even if there's a snowballs chance in hell that you will succeed. Some people might even be doing the right thing and knowing they will fail, but doing it anyway because they feel it's their duty.
Cheers,
Meade
Cynicysm is a narrow view of reality
Cynicism is taking the teeny tiny bits of reality that you don't like and making them your life focus.
If you think about the greater scheme of things, good things far outnumber the bad. I mean by a ridiculous amount.
Imagine a photograph. A wonderful scene of say, Paris. In the background the Eiffel tower is lit up, there is a beautiful full moon and thousands of stars in the sky. A woman sits at a large table outside of a cafe celebrating an anniversary with her partner, surrounded by friends and family laughing and having an amazing time. There are beautiful flowers and plenty of delicious food and drink scatted about the table. In front of the woman sits a bowl of steaming, hot soup. And if you look very closely, and squint you might be able to see the tiniest of black specks in her soup.
Now, when looking at this photograph, you see nothing but happiness and beauty. But to the woman whom which I speak of, the fly in her soup was enough to ruin her whole evening.
There are plenty of reasons why she can justify being upset over the fly in her soup, but why would anyone want to find reasons to be upset when the big picture is so beautiful?
Life is beautiful. We just get so caught up focusing on the little bits that we don't like, that we forget to appreciate it.
