It's Just Five Dollars!

I really can’t understand why a bunch of people that want to see a world without money are so adamant about not giving it to anyone. It’s a bit ridiculous to me. First this membership fee isn’t going to affect anything that happens on this site for free; it is only going to add bonus content for the people that purchase the membership. Second, it is only five dollars. Really five dollars is nothing, it doesn’t even buy a whole lunch. So the backstage pass is a bad idea, the retreat is a bad idea, a membership for bonus features is a bad idea, basically it seems as though anything that involves money is a bad idea to a lot of the people in this community. Everyone that thinks it’s such a bad idea should continue working their jobs and no longer accept the money, because that’s what you’re asking Evolver/RS people to do. This amazing group of people has spent four years doing everything they can to try to change the world and now it has gotten them to a point where they can’t continue. I guess they could all start couch surfing and bumming food while living on their computers so everyone here can still enjoy all their hard work for free. And really what it comes down to is all the thousands of people that they have been working so hard to cater to for four years don’t want to spend FIVE DOLLARS a month so they can have a place to live, and pay their bills. So what happens if Jonathon or Daniel’s computer were to break? Apparently they aren’t supposed to make any money, so they wouldn’t have it to replace their computer and then it’s all done. I guess everyone on here just needs to ask themselves if the conversations and blogs here, the Spores in all the cities around the world, the teleseminars, Videos, and all the other things they have going for ME and YOU are worth not buying one Latte a month and giving them the five bucks instead. If you don’t think that’s worth it why are you even on this site pretending that you care about it?

its a mindfuck. no one
its a mindfuck. no one really got an explanation of what's going on in the back end of this project. so it's a simple misunderstanding I'm sure. It would be cool to get to know the people pulling the strings "up there", and what mission control looks like. We are all trying like hell to do our own part, I spend many nights getting little sleep, to work all day at doing my own part.
Let us know what is going on, I grokked this because it's an important issue if you guys are broke and need a hand or something, but let us know what you need a hand with. I know some drupal, and am up for learning more. I'll be growing a surplus of food this summer so you guys are welcome to that. I also live pretty close to nyc and my cousin lives in Brooklyn and would probly let you guys live there for real cheap because he's short on money too. Let's make this thing work. We have the best and brightest here on evolver. Let's find out what we wound up with, who's really on here and what we all can do, and want to do. You guys should sit down and watch Grant Morrissons talk @ the disinformation conference some years back. Important things have been said about taking a step back for some perspective in times of tension. peace..

Well Chris, I share your frustration to a point. I think a lot of people still don't really understand what Pinchbeck is proposing in his blog... perhaps you can help me... but the idea of paying a modest membership fee for something that functions as a 'commerce platform' is actually why I signed up in the first place. I signed up for the backstage pass too but to be honest, I'm really not interested in too many more videos. I can already see a lot of good shit on youtube.
Don't get me wrong, I think the blogging platform is great. If the Team doesn't have the resources to keep this going, in my opinion they should make some moves to keep this website sustainable as it is, a blogging platform, before they move on to offering more services with the hope that it will bring in more money. I'd rather that they act like a cactus. But perhaps I still don't understand this.
In my opinion, considering the lack of financial awareness and knee-jerk reactions you have pointed out, I really believe that Pinchbeck is better off with a DONATE button and some specific purpose the donations are going towards. Very specific. I'm mostly thinking of the power of those 'money bombs' utilized by Ron Paul and Alex Jones.
Evolver can attract a lot of talented, creative individuals. I honestly don't believe that the Team needs to produce that much more shit. They need to work with what they have... and pay it forward.... we all do. If I invest my considerably limited funds in this website I only do it because it ultimately is also an investment for myself.
Cheers,
Meade
The problem is it's not even
The problem is it's not even close to self-sustaining, it is running on a team of people working more than full time. Second they have nothing left really to run on, they have run out of fuel, they need some revenue so they can afford to live without having to get other full time jobs and dropping Evolver.
I think it's a good idea that the website should have a tiered system a bit like deviantart for example. If you don't get the membership, you just have more ads. All I'm saying is that in this case the membership itself should be paying for extra features. I have trouble wrapping my mind around that membership initially providing the funds to save Evolver.
In my opinion a "Save Evolver" campaign. Or a "Reality Sandwich, don't bite more that you can chew" campaign would be better for what they need. Specifically state what they need and let the community pay it forward if it wants.
But they should probably do both anyway. But the pr needs to be better... most people still don't realize that all the free shit would still be there just at a slightly lesser level of service or with more ads.
Furthermore, I think that it takes time for these communities to build, I have seen an increase in the quality, interchange and traffic of users here, and eventually there will be money from ads. Same ads like are successful elsewhere... for seed companies, off the grid hardware, art, other cool stuff etc.
I couldn't agree more: a
I couldn't agree more: a donation button would garner them far more than they might expect. Not to mention that as we all, together and one by one, gear up to start living our lives in exactly that way - doing what we love because we love it, letting whatever benefits we accrue come about as a result of gifts freely given from those we help - going the Donation Button route would be a good symbol of that. Personally I'd donate well more than 5 bucks. I've done the same on other sites.
(Yet I haven't signed up for the backstage pass yet ... I'm such a hypocrite! Go figure....)
Now all that said from the sounds of it on the thread, they're going to be installing such a button. When/if ... time to put our money where our mouth is ;)

i think this site in general
i think this site in general is shit... but hear me out.. there's a lot of constructive and informative dialogue on the site but 90% of posts and blogs are posturing and soapboxing a bunch of contrite platitudes. there is nothing here that cannot be found in normal face-to-face interaction (gasp), web surfing and just plain reading. I think my cynicism stems from the fact that we "evolvers" seem to feel like were the cat's meow because we jibber-jab back and forth about this and that, (not directed at anyone in particular) it's nothing new and we're no better than anyone else. As far as the five bucks go, yeah it's no big deal, but at the same time it's no big point either.

Good grief Charile Brown!
For those individuals who still seem to have a problem understanding the simple & practical issue at hand here, maybe I can just pose a few questions to clarify:
Do you use evolver?
Do you enjoy and / or benefit from evolver?
Would you like to see this social networking / blogging site continue?
If you answered yes to at least (2) of those questions, then pay the goddam motherfucking membership fee and stop whining.
Budgets are relative, but in general - money is tighter for everyone....so you're not the only one dealing with cutbacks. The bottom line is if we don't step up and contribute, evolver will be no more. I suppose it may take extinction for those people to realize what it was they actually have here.

donation
Yes, a donation option is totally the way to go, no one is saying they don't believe in this or don't want to help in some way, but the concept of paid access is antithetical to the spirit of this community and will severely limit its growth.
Evolver's Future
Chris, thanks for the supportive comments -- which I really appreciate.
I think that part of the reason the community doesn't realize how much effort RS/Evolver takes, and our need for cash to sustain it, is that we didn't broadcast it publicly. We've been trying to make it work as a (semi-) traditional indy media company, and we kept our operations opaque, as media companies tend to do. It felt a bit self-indulgent to me to let folks know just how relentlessly our tiny team of 3 full-time and 3 part-time people has to drive itself in order to keep up with all we've got going (daily publication, Spores, regional groups, promotion, Evolver.net blogs, books, Intensives, events and retreats, etc.). Personally, my days are so jammed that I don't even have time to write posts or comments...
Not to mention the time it takes to attract financing, so we can keep the operation growing.
But it's been clear for a while that Evolver isn't ever going to be a traditional media company. The way the community has come together around RS/Evolver makes this a new kind of animal. In many ways, we're merely the facilitators of a conversation -- the keepers of the forum, where everyone can convene. No one should underestimate how much time, energy, and dedication this requires. But, at the same time, it's the most personally rewarding effort I've ever been a part of. Just mind bogglingly beautiful.
Still, I have a new baby (almost five months old) and expenses to pay. For the past three years of 60 hours work weeks, I've barely been paid. The real unsung hero of Evolver has been my wife, Carmel, who has subsidized this operation with her day job.
The trick for us now is to establish a revenue stream to support basic operations, to ask the community we've been serving to enable us to keep things in motion. Daniel has suggested some of the possibilities that we're exploring -- which includes a donation button. But whatever we do, it should be a program that does more than, in effect, put out the donation cup. Folks should pay to help build the movement, take Evolver to the next step, so it can continue to grow into an effective force for change.
I've had my hands full the last couple of weeks, and haven't been able to post here about what we're concocting. But I've cleared out time over the next few days so I can offer some ideas and see what other evolvers think.
I love this forum and the passion of the people who are taking part.
Silly
I find the amount of bickering over this to be completely absurd. Chris, you are hilarious, have you gotten the vindication you so desperately seek from the RS/Evolver staff? If you guys want money that bad, you can have it, but enough is enough, money needs to be given out of love, not out of fear or ideology or worship. This is really quite silly.

But if that was true..
Why hasn't the money been given already? Why haven't the Evolver and RS people been showered with money by an adoring community?

have you gotten the vindication you so desperately seek from the RS/Evolver staff?.... that's a cheap shot... keep the comments about the membership/donation subject
I value honesty above
I value honesty above everything else, and so I will be honest. I've had people respond to my blogs with comments like "it seems to me that your actions are covering up feelings of guilt," etc. I took what they had to say and thought about it, and let it go, this is my choice.

New Group: Building the Evolver Social Movement
We've created an Evolver Group for an ongoing discussion about building the Evovler Social Movement, for those with ideas to offer or thoughts to share.
See you there.
maybe it's time to throw in the towel
Maybe it's time to just throw in the towel here and move along.
Growing a community by begging for money is not evolved, it's business as usual. If you want money, you organize a leprechaun hunt, pure and simple. Do you have any idea how much you can sell a pot of gold for nowadays?
There are many other perils and pitfalls for people like ourselves in even attempting to work together. If the CIA, FBI, or the Men in Black haven't already infiltrated the leadership of this community by now, they will soon enough. Really, if you think about it, who is to say that any one of us isn't an undercover operative just ready to spoil a perfectly orchestrated Utopian community at the most opportune time?
Maybe the most evolved thing to do right now is to hold a vote whether or not the people running the Evolver site should hang up their website smock's once and for all and call it quits. If they don't get the financial support soon, they are going to have to close their doors anyway so why not give them the heads up now so that they can move on to bigger and better things?
Evolver dating
I don't have any problem paying 5 bucks, but I don't think this will generate the kind of revenue RS/Evolver is looking for.
If Evolver needs some cash they should add a dating/personal ad component to the site. Look at a site like plentyoffish.com It is a free dating site that Alexa ranks 103rd in the US and consequently makes a lot of money from advertising.
I think there is a real market for a... let's say counter culture dating site. If you smoke pot and don't care for american idol or the NFL you won't find much on most dating sites. Most of us would not feel comfortable on something as overt as 420 dating. I think Evolver dating could fill this niche and market the dating site for people who are into...well all the things we talk about on these sites. This might also draw more people to the RS and Evolver themselves.
Just a thought.
