Has anyone seen this? Thoughts on it? It's out in theatres now. I've been e-mailing and talking to a Buddhist monk recently and he said....

"went to see imaginarium of dr. parnassus. directed by terry gilliam with heath ledger and johnny depp. it has the whole thing, good, evil, and the devil of course. includes some tongue in cheek visuals....but the whole of the path is there with our own cultural references; brilliant...."

So i asked about Avatar...

"its playing at kerasotes showplace east....i saw avatar twice earlier. imaginarium is way deeper on a philosophical level and even more magical in many ways...."

SEE IT!

LOVED IT

I feel that it wasn't as publicized as it should have been, but I enjoyed it very much =)

far more contemplative

it really lends itself to much deeper contemplation as well as subconscious absorption than avatar. nuff said ;)

Awesome

I was surprised that it wasn't really talked about at all in the mainstream media. I mean, if they (media) thought that it wasn't as gossip-worthy as compared to some other crappy date movie - I can understand that. The plot kept me interested, and I loved the visuals and gypsy-style attire throughout.

I think that this was far better than Alice in Wonderland. Comparing the two films, they have very similar elements (Johnny Depp aside). Entering a dream-world where the spirit-body travels through the light and dark.

If I had the choice to choose one or the other (and this pains me to say, for I am a Tim Burton die-hard), I would say pass over the expensive 3-D/Disney marketing of Alice in Wonderland - go see Imaginarium.

if your into imaginarium also check out: INK

i loved it... and i cant believe that not even the counter culture scene has been talking about it either. glad to see it comes up in a blog here... (leave it to evolver!!) another movie that got no hype or attention at all is: INK, it was released on dvd a few months back. it was one of the most well done and insightful films ive seen this year. i highly recommend it,.
much love

* on a side note a friend of mine told me that Gilliam is high degree mason. hearing that and looking again at films like this one and 12 monkeys i think their is some connection with the philosophy.

damn

ok im sold ha.. so surprised to see this blog had 11 groks today

It's been out in theaters

It's been out in theaters for quite some time now, and yes, it is fantastic! The plot is a little bit chaotic and confusing, but on a symbolic level it is a great introspection into the human imagination!

Lovely Universe

I don't often pay to see a big screen movie lately...but I saved myself for the Dr. Gilliam has become one of my favorite artists over the past decade. As I learn more about his work I can see why I love his creations so much, and that is because we have similar visions, fantasies and ideas. When I stepped through the Imaginarium I felt very close to the creative energy of this lovely universe. Not only was the film fabulously beautiful, mindfully rich, darkly thoughtful and awkwardly sarcastic...but it was also so perfectly timed to match my own life. Parnassus went through so much before it made it to the theater including hard critiques, budget issues, death, reformulation, transformation and strong belief from the makers. It seemed as though the movie waited to release until I was right where I needed to be in order to fully appreciate it. Not only had I mirrored the path the movie had traveled, but I also had been studying the topics it pried as well. As much as I really loved the film in all the important areas of commentary I feel even closer to what I learned: On the path be ready for everything to talk to you in the exact language you need to hear. Everything talks to us, looks at us, feels us and shares...and it is when we open our cells for absorption that we can sense the amazing nutrition the universe sprinkles on us at all times. We don't need interpreters, doctors, guides or gurus to crack the codes or translate, all we need is to have fully digested our own selves. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus spoke to me in many languages and volumes, and satiated my spiritually creative appetite.

oi

Aside from the costumes, I thought this was literally the worst movie I've ever seen... I seriously almost left multiple times. For real... Just awful, man! Just awful. Made me feel simultaneously embarrassed (for being in the theater watching it), disappointed, slightly angry, distressed. The worst was the sad echoes of monty python (ie giant cop head scene). Argh... I wish I hadn't been reminded. I don't mean to dis anyone by saying this, but I'd have to stretch pretty hard to extract spiritual meaning from this film. Well, meaningful meaning, anyway.

a great modern myth

this film was fantastic. I think if Joseph Campbell could have seen it, he would have called it a great modern myth. All the critical themes are there: life, death, wealth, poverty, suffering, non-suffering, love, mirrors, give, take, and the story...
The story is a labyrinthine mystery. I loved it.

speaking of Gilliam

Anybody remember Time Bandits?

Yeah for some reason I always forget the title of this movie, but I also heard great things. Didn't know it was Gilliam, though.
