The Price of Spirit.

What does it mean to be a healer? This is a question I have been asking myself ever since I found an interest in the healing arts, as well as the awakening of consciousness. After two years of deep transformation, I find myself wondering how I can share this beautiful wisdom and love with other people, that others might be able to experience the similar awakenings.
In western society we now find a variety of healing arts popping up. They seem to come and go as quickly as fashion trends. Many of them are supposedly connected to ancient traditions which have been adopted to fit the western mind (Reiki, Yoga, Shamanic Practices, etc), while others are creations that have been birthed out of the western mind itself, such as quantum healing and a wealth of new age practices.
There is so now much "Fluff" around the idea of being a healer, people have come up with all sorts of elaborate systems that are supposed to help one heal or become more enlightened... I've seen interdimensional travel classes selling for $500 a session, and "Certified Shamans" who spent thousands of dollars on week long retreats and online classes. We've taken something that is supposed to be sacred and turned it into everything else in our society. We've become so distracted by all of this Shiny new-age enlightenment that we've forgotten the true purpose of what we are doing, and disgraced the Spirit upon which all these "Ancient" traditions are based.
Regardless of which particular modality is in question, it would seem to me that the ultimate goal of healing is to put the other person in a position where they are capable of healing themselves without the aid of something external. So in reality, is it really our job to "Heal" anyone? Perhaps we are simply meant to catalyze a transformation.
There is now a tremendous market which has been created for various forms of "Healing". Almost every healing practitioner I have met claims to have the ability to provide either some powerful form of healing or transformation, yet so very few are willing to provide these services for free. Isn't the awakening of the collective consciousness dependent on more people realizing their true nature and their own innate divinity? Why are we charging people for this knowledge and healing? Why are we discriminating towards people in this way? Why are we selling "Energy"? Do we own energy? How can you put a price on Spirit...?
When confronted with this, everyone seems to hide behind the idea of an "Equivalent Energy Exchange", stating that there must be an equal exchange of energy between two people. While it is true that one should not freely give energy to a being that is taking it for granted (thus resulting in at least one person being drained and depleted), it is also true that karma will inevitably balance itself out in the grander scheme of things. Many self-proclaimed healers have used this idea as an excuse to justify a sense of self-entitlement, as if the universe owed them something. There are many healers who consider their "Service" so valuable that they charge several hundred dollars for an hour long session, while simultaneously owning nice houses, driving nice cars, drinking lattes, and feeding back into the consumerist machine that is destroying the life on this planet.
It would seem to me that as long as a person is truly being receptive to a form of healing or teaching, as long as a person is willing to help themselves as much as you help them, this alone is payment enough. What could be more valuable than really helping someone else transform? What could be more worth while than another beings attention , dedication, and receptiveness?
From my observations, it would seem to me that most people who practice these healing modalities are still trying to live a luxurious life. If you make more than a hundred dollars a month, you are probably living several times more luxuriously than many people in this world. Any time you try to filter energy through an intention connected with material profit, something gets lost along the way. You can not transmit energy in it's purest form if there is a self-serving transaction involved. Energy in it's purest form is channeled freely out of love and service to the cosmos. Spirit is Eternal. Spirit is free for all beings. It is not something to be possessed, nor is it something to profit from. The need for such profound material acquisition is a self-created illusion that our society has become plagued by.
Those healers that do give away their services freely are often channeling some of the most potent and pure energy. The best "energy work" I have ever received has been given freely, while in the past I have bartered for other forms of healing and experienced almost no effect.
When we are still operating within the restraints of this old-paradigm mentality of consumerism and loss/gain, we are not healing anyone! All we are doing is feeding into a perpetual cycle of greed, entitlement, and victim consciousness. By creating a market for healing, people are encouraged to create a need for "Healing". Many healing practiconers allow themselves to become energetic-dumpsters for people who don't want to deal with their own problems. If someone is consistantly manifesting a problem for themselves, it's a lot easier to pay someone $50 a week to do "energy work" on them than it is for them to actually confront their own demons and take responsibility for their own healing.
Instead of trying to sell people God for Money, maybe we should be more concerned with really providing people with experiences that allow them to take responsibility for themselves. A real healer should be able to create a situation in which others are able to do the same things for themselves! A real healer should be to enable another to Transcend their self-created need for a "Healing".
There is no market in showing people how to be fully responsible, fully illuminated beings capable of healing themselves and manifesting beautiful realities. If people can heal themselves, they won't need to pay you to do it for them.... In this sense, I see the healing community selling themselves out to the same follies of western medicine.
So I ask this of you, if you are really capable of helping someone, if you are really capable of aiding people with transformational experiences, then make yourself availability! Provide these services for those that need it! Empower others to do the same! We desperately need more self-aware self-responsible beings on this planet if we really want to create a profound shift in consciousness. Extend this into every situation possible in your life. Help the guy next to you at the bus stop undergo a paradigm shift, Give a stranger a hug, find ways to assist all beings in their growth and development whenever it is feasible.
Helping others in their awakening process is one of the most important things that can be done - Does it matter if your directly receiving something from them in the form of some kind of payment? Who cares! The change that will be created in the world because of this service should be much greater than any material exchange.

Beautiful lessons learned
Your depth of awareness and your words here are profound. Stay true to spirit, there is the truth. When the breakthrough occured for me there was a profound sense of gratitude that overcame me for the gift of awareness and spirit. The immediate thing I wanted to do was give it away becasue that is being in the flow of spirit, energy, the universe the earth... who would not want to. And it took many years of healing and giving to meet an elder who noted to me that the healer not only has a responsibility to hold people in highest regard and aid spirit in healing the body, but also to teach them to value and take responsibility for the gift of spirit. Not everyone is like you and gets that to give away is the only way to stay in the flow. So my elder said that it was key to help people understand that responsibility through give-away - an ancient teaching of balance. Even if someone came with nothing but a penny and the heart and kindness of their intention was true, and that's all they have, then do the healings, he noted. But don't put a specific price on spirit... when we do it runs out. It takes time to help people understand this flow. It certainly is not in 1000 dollar workshops. When we do the give-aways, the responsibility and energy flow goes up beyond any level we can even know.
Thank you for your awareness, heart, and sensitivity to the real workings of spirit. Keep giving, it aint easy, but there is never a loss.
Peace
contrasting perspective
I have seen this type of comment many times...the old argument over whether "healers" should accept money. Spirit is available in abundance for anyone who knows how to tap into it. I help people tap into it. I charge not for spirit itself, but for my time, skill and hard work.
Spirit is the essence of everything in the material world. Whatever work you do, however you offer your time, skill and hard work involves spirit, whether you are an awakening facilitator like me, whether you have a job that would be considered more "mundane," and everything in between. The time will (hopefully) come when we can instantly manifest everything we need and want with our minds (our natural state of being), but until then our time, skill and effort are needed to work with the spiritual in the material in the old fashioned way.
I dream of the day when my work is no longer needed (often impatiently!), but for now the mass conscousness is such that many people can benefit from the assistance I, and others like me have to offer. I hope people value your time, skill and effort too- enough that you can afford a place to live, food to eat, the car/bus or bicycle you use for transportation, even the cost of your computer, power source and internet service provider you use to read this message. It is all an exchange of spiritual energy. May we all be blessed in all the ways we exchange it. ..even if you disagree with the content of this comment ;)

This is a really beautifully expressed message, Sky.
I struggle with what feels right and what doesn't in regards to money and charging for healing-type work. I personally have a lot of associations with money that make it 'bad', and even that feels like part of my personality, not my essence.
I totally agree with the concept that we are not doing the healing, rather creating the space in which the other can heal themselves.
That said, I am more inclined to agree with Linda's response with regard to $. For me, charging for my commitment to healing (in my case, that looks like coaching) allows me to continue showing up in a good way for my clients.
Showing up in a good way requires me to put in a lot of time and effort to do my practices, and continue learning and healing myself so that I can provide information in the form of a vibration. At least, this is the phase I am in right now.
I believe this vibration gives others a chance to feel what is possible, which is why I am more inclined towards one teacher/healer over another — their vibration is showing me what could be in myself.
Either way, this is a great conversation and I appreciate the chance to listen and be heard.
Peace,
Matt

I agree with Matt, Sky, that your post is well written. I appreciate your bringing up a controversial subject so we can discuss it. There is something I want to add to what I posted earlier. It is about the separation of matter and spirit.
A lot of religions and spiritual practices teach that matter and spirit are separate. Matter can refer to anything in our material world for example our bodies and our money. Even people who are not religious or spiritual often carry beliefs about money that come from the separation paradigm.
I believe that spirit and matter are one, that the essence of matter is spirit, and that spiritual growth depends on appreciating and embracing the spiritual in the material. This includes financial abundance. As embodied beings, part of spiritual mastery is having the material resources necessary for survival, well being and even enjoyment of life. I believe we are meant to enjoy the material world as part of enjoying divinity. Unfortunately, many people have fear or limiting beliefs around money and around themselves which creates the greed and other unhealthy ways money is used. Money is neither good nor bad, but how we are in relationship with ourselves in regards to money needs to change.
I have provided free services to those who need it. Occasionally I still do, but unfortuantely my landlord does not. Likewise for the people who sell food, provide utilities, etc. I believe I deserve a place to live, and the resources to make ends meet, even to do some fun things that are not just survival. I am an awakening facilitator (healing seems too limiting a concept and practice for me) but I know a LOT of healers. None of them are driving fancy cars, or living luxurious lives. I do not even own a car and upscale living is not important to me anyway. Most of the healers I know are doing their best to survive, but maybe that is just the people I know.
If you know of any very wealthy "healers" who need some assistance addressing their inner sense of lack, feel free to send them my way. I gratefully accept and appreciate the divinity of abundance!

money is neutral?
matt,
your reply (and OP) resonate with a 'vision' i had 35 years ago. i saw an empty earth with 'pallets' of money stacked and ordered as in a warehouse. row upon row of stacks of money. nothing else. no trees, animals, mountains, lakes, etc. only money. no life. no sound at all...
the natural world is being turned into money, allowing you to 'exchange' it without hesitation, remorse, or forethought...
the money we 'spend' is literally the sorrow of slaves, the souls of the 'native peoples' we conquered, the animals we slaughter, the air, land and water we pollute.
does anyone actually believe 'money' will save us from ourselves? to me, it is precisely the abstraction from nature to 'money' that allows the disconnect between what money represents and what we think it is...ymmv
richard.
you're wackin' my world here
you're wackin' my world here tonite, thank you.
the price of a healing session is to attend, mindful of sacred space,
heartful of the intended grace, aware of the similarity
between 'attention, attending, intention, intending"
healing others IS the payment, for is not our wellness inherently found
in the wellness that surrounds us. there IS NO 'your' healing, 'my' healing,
your wealth, my wealth, your work, my work. all these things are OURS.
within that shift, that recognition, we return to the natural state,
free of this insane separation of self from other.
we all remember this song...
"maybe i'll be there to take your hand,
maybe i'll be there to share the land,
that they'll be givin' away
when we all live together,..
i'm talkin' 'bout forever now"

cool posts!
I do not believe in "healing." As infinite beings, we already exist in all stages of being, including wellness. There is nothing to heal, only choices to make about what to embody. Just wanted to clarify that. I dislike the term "healer." It is irrelevant in my paradigm.
As for money, I still believe it is neutral. It is pieces of paper and metal, numbers on a computer. We can choose how we experience ourselves in relationship to money. Money is a mirror of our fear/lack as well as our love/abundance. It is an opportunity for self transformation as in: What do you see when you look in the mirror? I believe someday money will no longer be used as we will move into a more direct exchange without the extra step of paper, coins and numbers. For now, at least for most of us, I believe the mirror of money is serving a purpose.
Sky Harmony, I think it is awesome you are living without the need for money. That is not my path at this time but I think it is admirable. I am working on my openness to abundance in all its forms, including money. As I transform my relationship with myself in regards to abundance, I continue to move more into the surrender that you mention. For me, truly surrendering means non- attachment around money, both having it and not having it. I am not sure anyone can surrender if it involves only being open to one polarity, only some outcomes but not others. Obviously I am not "there" yet. I am wondering if any of us posting are. If we were, we would probably not be feeling strongly enough to post about it. My opinion anyway...
