Uschi Kolb Gallery is pleased to present Los Angeles: Aspects of The Archaic Revival

Los Angeles: Aspects of The Archaic Revival is an exhibition curated by artist Dani Tull, featuring 16 artists from Los Angeles.

The exhibition title is a reference to Terence McKenna’s book, “The Archaic Revival: Speculations on Psychedelic Mushrooms, the Amazon, Virtual Reality, UFOs, Evolution, Shamanism, the Rebirth of the Goddess, and the End of History”.

Essentially, McKenna’s “Archaic Revival” hypothesizes that our civilization is currently in a process of reaching back through evolution and the genetic archive, and reawakening primordial awareness and traditional attitudes toward nature. The “Archaic Revival” signifies the eventual breakdown of the pattern of male dominance and hierarchy based on “animal organization,” and moves us toward the idea and ideal of a vegetation “Earth Goddess,” the “Gaia hypothesis.” The Archaic Revival draws esoteric and scientific links between the use of psychoactive vegetation and the origin of Human Consciousness, 2012 Prophecy and Extraterrestrials, Shamanic ritual and the “Technosphere.”

The exhibition features works by 16 established and emerging artists from the great basin of Los Angeles, a county whose Fine Art Museum straddles the primordial ooze of the La Brea Tar Pits, the self-excavating wellspring where Prehistory is raised into the present. The works in this exhibition are manifestations of a burgeoning cultural dialogue within the strata of our collective unconscious. These artists use the past to push into the future; and as our future is undoubtedly becoming stranger and more uncertain, and humanity ponders the possibility of its own extinction, we are nostalgically reaching back through history and mythology for steadying metaphors, and a greater affinity with our own genesis.
