The Vaccine Diary

I decided at the beginning of the year that in 2010 I would say yes to any opportunity that came my way and see where it would lead me. So far it has been great I am pleased to report!
However in my enthusiasm to just say yes when a great opportunity came my way to travel to the other side of the world I forgot to consider something very important:
I HATE Vaccines - I have long been suspicious of them and when it comes to the big decision whether to have them or not I have opted for not on more than one occasion. I won't go into the reasons here as I am sure most Evolvers are at least as informed as I am on the very worrying aspects of the Vaccination Business and that is not the point of my blog.

I am getting a number of vaccines - which I see no way out of getting including Rabies in less than an hour. This means I will be getting 3 shots over the next month or so and I intend to post comments on this blog as I go along.
I invite you to subscribe to new comments below and I will keep you informed of my progress as I go along. I am doing this mainly because I am scared and I am a bit annoyed with myself for getting into this situation without so much as a thought!

I will ask the doctor/nurse as many questions as I can and I will update on physical symptoms too. I am not fully sure yet which vaccines I will allow but I will list the ones taken in my next installment.

So dont forget to subscribe to new comments and I will be commenting later today and again when I have updates.

First visit

After a dubious start the Doc turned out to be very informative and open about the vaccines and the side effects. As the rabies shot seemed the most serious one she outlined all the facts when I asked.

Turns out you still need rabies shots if you are bitten even if you have the jabs. However you would also need blood products (Rabies Immune Globulin)which you don't if you have had the 3 shots first. Anyway I got so flustered I decided to leave the Rabies shot and have a think about it so I just got the Hep A and the typhoid .

As I was walking down the road I seemed to have a massive "compute" of the info and based on the fact that I would have to have even more of the Rabies Jabs if exposed to a risk ( I will be exposed to Cats, Dogs and Monkys) and also Blood Plasma products I changed my mind and ran back. She very kindly let me back in before the next client and gave me the first of the 3 shots.

It wasn't half as sore as I expected - though I felt a bit perculiar for a couple of hours after. I had some light headed moments and a strange coughing fit.

I have to go back on Monday for the next jab ...will keep you posted.

Has anyone any info on Malaria Tablets while we are on this topic?

12 hours later

began to feel very weak and panicky and when I finally got to sleep I had vivid nightmares all night. Arm was very sore from about this time.

Feel a bit better and not as sore this morning

exhausted

sooooooooooo tired and my joints hurt. Hope it is a co-incidence.

Still Sore- cant complete treatment

I found my arms and legs very weak in the last few days and felt like I had to concentrate on my walking which was a tad alarming. anyway I also got some shooting pains in my elbows and knees.

I have just been to have my first top up which you need to do 1 week after the first injection and after much discussion with that Doc and my GP it has been decided not to follow up the treatment. The symptoms are associated with side effects and although I am displaying good muscle strength I cant ignore how I feel. Also being an asthmatic I am at a higher risk of getting side effects.

This is a total pain as I will be spending quite a bit of time around animals and so I am a bit worried.....

pain!

Good grief - pain getting worse. Its like stabbing pains, joint pains, muscle pains, restless legs and tingling at various times.

Will have to go back to Doc tomorrow.

I've been following your

I've been following your story. I hope you are okay and that your trip is worth it!
