Hi Folks,
Here is my first crack at promotional copy to invite our community to contribute regular membership dues to the Evolver Social Movement.
On one level, I can't help approaching this entire project as a conceptual art project - an example of what the German artist Joseph Beuys called "social sculpture."
I would love to hear from people about how this copy could be made more effective. Also if it is offensive or annoying in any way, please let me know and also feel free to offer your own specific corrections or contributions to what we are proposing.
Looking forward to this process.
Yours
Daniel
Reasons to Join the Evolver Social Movement
By joining the Evolver Social Movement, you contribute directly to a transparent organization devoted to the transformation of human consciousness and society. Evolver spreads the seeds of an alternative culture, one devoted to rebalancing the human relationship with the earth and exploring new forms of nonsectarian spirituality. At the same time, we believe Evolver has the potential to grow into a movement capable of influencing debate on important issues of our time, such as the War on Drugs, corporate overreach, climate change, preservation of wilderness and natural resources, and many more.
You can contribute anything you like to the Evolver Social Movement, but we propose a $5 monthly membership charge. Anything at or above $5 per month, and you will be eligible to receive, if you desire one, an Evolver Social Movement Membership Card. We plan to develop a tangible set of rewards, including reduced price ticket to events and discounts at local and national businesses that accord with our community’s values, that will make the Evolver Card a useful and valuable item for many. Through the Evolver Card, the Evolver Social Movement can outreach into mainstream middle class and lower income communities who may not immediately connect with the deeper ethos of the movement, but can respond to direct commercial incentives.
Your membership in the Evolver Social Movement allows us to develop our ongoing projects:
• Media: Evolver publishes Reality Sandwich, the leading web magazine for transformative culture. Membership dues will allow us to develop new content features, produce new multimedia content including news and interview shows and other video series, and promote and market Reality Sandwich content to the world.
• Network: Evolver.net is our community home for the Evolver Social Movement. Built on the open-source Drupal platform, Evolver.net helps our community to express themselves, find each other, plan events, and collaborate on projects. As soon as possible, we intend to add new features to the network and make it more user-friendly. We would like to build a platform for alternative exchanges, timeshares, and barter arrangements. We would also like to add a marketplace, the Evolver Exchange, for Evolvers to share their goods and services with the community. We would also like to launch a multimedia platform for Evolvers to share videos professionally produced by Evolver members, potentially creating our own user-generated network. Revenues will give us the opportunity to improve Evolver.net, and market and promote it.
• Community: The Evolver Social Movement currently includes as many as 50 regional chapters that put on monthly themed events, called Evolver Spores. The Evolver Spores bring communities together, educate people on new perspectives and critical issues of our time, and promote Evolver to new people. The Evolver Regionals are the core of the Evolver Social Movement. We have seen some groups blossom, putting on Evolver-themed festivals, developing permaculture gardens, community spaces, and other projects together. Money from membership dues will help us develop Evolver Regionals in new locales, while potentially funding projects and initiatives undertaken by current Evolver Regional groups.
Beyond supporting existing initiatives, revenues collected from members can be used to develop new projects in a variety of areas.
• Evolver Festivals and Conferences: Evolver would like to bring together current thought leaders and creative impresarios at live events, festivals and conferences. For those who cannot attend, Evolver will broadcast panels and workshops out to the community, and hopefully far beyond.
• Peace2012: In Conjunction with EarthDance, Evolver supports Peace2012, an initiative to create a synchronized world peace meditation on December, 2012, the last day of a 5,125-year Long Count Calendar, according to the Classic Maya Civilization in the Yucatan. The end of the Mayan Calendar is already on people’s minds due to a barrage of films, television shows, and other media, much of it designed to make people afraid of some type of catastrophic event destined for that time. The intention of Peace2012 is to make use of the energies already focused on that date for the cause of world peace. Scientific studies have shown that prayer and meditation have measurable effects, increasing resonance and coherence. A globally synchronized peace meditation – whether on December 21, 2012, or at another time – could bring about a new level of coherence for our evolving planetary consciousness.
• Partnerships: Collaboration with organizations involved in the protection of the Amazon jungle, the rainforest of Guatemala, and other threatened bioregions. Collaboration with organizations like the Buckminster Fuller Institute, Burners without Borders, Institute of Noetic Sciences, and Dr. Stanislav Grof’s Transpersonal Training Institute.
• Projects from, or proposed by, the Evolver community: As the Evolver Social Movement grows, a defined percentage of revenues received will be put toward projects that gain the most impassioned support from the Evolver community, who will have the opportunity to vote and comment on what they would like to see manifest.
We hope you will be inspired by what is possible here, and contribute generously to the Evolver Social Movement, an activist community that reflects your values and your ideals. Beyond donations of money, we are equally, if not more, interested in other ways you can contribute to the movement. We intend to create a system that will allow people to participate as members by contributing their ideas, skills, energy, and time – giving their gift in the best way possible for them.
While the Evolver Social Membership actively seeks paying members to intensify the range of our activities, we will in no way exclude people who do not want to contribute in this way, or who believe that paid membership dues go against their principles. Both Evolver.net and Reality Sandwich will remain available to all.
As most of us recognize, we live at a time of accelerating change, increasing threat, and extraordinary opportunity. Currently, mainstream media and social networks tend to keep their viewers and users distracted and detached. Rather than alienate people further, Evolver.net seeks to reconnect people to their local communities, their native earth, and their own soul. Ironically, we intend to use the extraordinary capacities of our communications networks to get people away from their computers and back in the world, collaborating to bring about the more beautiful and peaceful world we deserve to attain.

It's so affordable
That's crazy. Five dollars a month is easy to give. It's so easy that the thirty or whatever I would have given I would probably give anyway now. What other system do we have that is already in motion enough to work, at this still pretty smooth point in time, that we can all fall back on in a time of actual crisis? That is correct you lovely Evolvers , Evolver is it! It's all we've got on the earthly macrocosm that is willing to do something for the people by the people and the people running the show are all right there in NY and not in some gated community with guards and dogs and lazer beams aimed at your jugular so you could easily reach them if you wanted and storm the castle if you felt any harm from any of the effects of giving $5 to something you're already attached to and using anyway. It's quite perfect and completely clever. Place your money and your bets in a safe place now for a safe future landing so when the money machine finally breaks we're not left freaking out in the chaos. What could be better?

hey
why stop at "preservation of nature and natural resources", how bout "expansion of nature and it's resources"? now that's something enchanted to shoot for
preservation of nature feels a bit like treating it as a museum piece or something, which seems to be what many people want right now, but can't be what they actually need.
Let's see the Old growth forests return to New York State, and return to Europe, and let's see the 6' lobsters back off the Maine Coast that they used to catch when they first come here, so many years ago. Can you fathom roaming packs of Buffallo and free roaming humans? Organic farms outside of small cities dotting the country side, similar to Hayao Mayazaki's "Howl's Moving Castle" set and setting. no suburbs, just country dotted with small harmless "cities". But also some extravagant Victorian-style cities, with sidewalks near the tops of buildings, a roller coaster spanning the skyline and on down to the street level through old times square, ...just for a little afternoon adrenaline rush.
To continue, Grand Central gets relocated up there too for shits and giggles. Maybe rebuild the old trade centers to boot. We could have forumula one races through the 5 boroughs, and underwater cities off the coasts of LA and Miami. Floating towns or cities also, ontop of the vast oceans, and the freedom for people to do whatever they want. The fun part would be building this, the pay off would be when it's so cool we drool.
Old Major highways could be transitioned into high speed rail ways connecting major cities. Maybe use the idea of a pneumatic rail similar to the bank tellers send box at a bank drive-thru to connect smaller ones. could invent anything we want. do anything too.
The best thing would be to have importance put back into the wisdom of the "elderly"... They still use the old peoples wisdom in government, they know how smart those peeps are, our world should have that too.
world peace would just happen if the world was that cool. and the system of life was based on wonder, rather than money. We could probably build an elevator to space if we wanted to.
Evolver social movement is a key component
hi folks
I Will give 5 bucks because that IS a move of change. If we decide here and Now that we want to be a part of a big transformation, at least i feel evolver is it. It has given me so much. And hopefully many others who have connected locally and on the site has too. This movement includes US. Thats the point. We have come far across the globe with regionals by the initiative and help Of evolver. Lets raise our heads and be the change you wish to see. I would Love to support evolver.
I would be happy to help you with filming and editing. Just Let me know.
peace
I grok the idea.
It's not the money that's even the idea here. It's about the symbol that money represents, as always: contributing yourself in a manageable, if not almost completely effortless, way to something that you believe in. The problem with the world has never been, essentially, about the money, but simply in what people believe in.
But to continue with this idea of effortless yet effective contribution by all, I'd venture to say that even, say, 15 bucks would be asking too much as a flat rate. It needs to still be so accessible that even someone on a shitty, broke day, can just stumble upon this and start contributing without having to worry about going hungry that night.
Well I don't have five bucks
Well I don't have five bucks so I guess I can't afford an evolution ticket, aha. I propose you add more ways for people to contribute outside of the monetary system, you listed that as an option but it doesn't seem like very much thought has been put into it.
You rejected the suggestion of volunteer work in the other thread, so what can someone who has no money do to be more involved in your proposed social movement?
Love....
In Lak'Ech, I am another yourself.
Ad
Very well written advertisement. Should reel some in, but like sky harmony, i simply don't have the five bucks, but would be more than willing to offer up the services I have available through an evolver exchange (I remember this was in talk at the origin of rs, and would would love to see an evolver tiny set up and don't see how it can be that difficult).
One suggestion to help make this much more effective is to offer full transparency of all accounts received so that the community knows exactly where there dues are going and can help direct the budget as well. We need full democracy here and not just another political organization that tries to talk through money but can't (Greenpeace, etc.).
All bridges can be rebuilt.
Nice summary...
I'm glad you emphasized that participants can still contribute in other ways. I for one will be doing both.....so as soon as the button is ready, I'm sending my first $5.
Very exciting to think of all the possibilities you mention. Thanks Daniel & staff...
"We are the mystical.....the sweet science of seeing the whole"
I support the idea, even if
I support the idea, even if I cringed at the "Evolver Social Movement Membership Card"-I think "Evolver Activist Network" might work better. It sounds as though this "social movement" requires a membership card (even if it does not in fact), and if I didn't know better would write it off as another commercialized "revolution" milking a certain demographic.
To me the main draws for community dues are greater support for the Spores and an alternative exchange hub here online. I think cultivating (or colonizing to use the correct term for mushroom mycelia) the regional spores to bring the knowledge and skills to thrive in a new paradigm to their localities is perhaps the most effective way Evolver can connect with more people. This is where I would like my money to be going for the most part, though I do support the other proposals. Perhaps we could vote on where our money goes?
If we were able to choose, the system would organize around the collective will of Evolvers, and encourage us to research and scrutinize how money is being spent in a way that I feel would benefit the overall effort. I trust in the quality of Evolver and Reality Sandwich that Daniel and company know what they are doing, but the more members are involved in decisions and processes the better I think.

i do not have five bucks to give each month either. I'm based in central america where its quite a challenge to make a living, and try to use money as little as possible, at the moment im working more than 8 hour days, if there is any evolver events that need broadcasting i could be advertising them on my podcast, id be happy to contribute that way, or it will be a sad day for me if i have to leave evolver becuase of five bucks.
No one is going to have to
No one is going to have to leave Evolver over 5 bucks, or over any money, unless they just don't get any and they go under. The free website will still be the same, if not better after this second tier membership takes place. The second level is just going to have some bonus features and help to make all of it better for everyone. You don't have to worry if you can't pay the membership fee, you will still have the amazing free website.
I don't understand why this
I don't understand why this argument keeps on going rounds about the money. It's been made perfectly clear that unless RS/Evolver gets some money soon it will go under. So I don't want to have this argument anymore, I've had it enough. I'll pay the membership and be stoked about it.
I appreciate that you take
I appreciate that you take the time to explain the goals of the organization. Obviously want to avoid the standard sales pitch and display more respect for the readers than what they are used to seeing. People considering becoming paying members will want those answers readily available to them. As a marketing piece though, it might be a little heady.
I would make the bullet points stonger, shorter and stand out more so that people can scan through it, get a feel for what it is about, and go back and read it later if they choose. Just distill and crystallize the information. It's sad, but the reality is that if it appears shorter, the more likely your audience will take the time to digest it. Insulting I know... but it's how I make a living.
Example this:
To this:
EVOLVER EXCHANGE: Evolver.net helps our community to express themselves, find each other, plan events, and collaborate on projects. By becoming a paying member, you are helping Evolver.net add new features like Evolver Exchange. Evolver Exchange, will allow members to share their goods and services with the community by providing a marketplace for alternative exchanges, timeshares, and barter arrangements.
CREATIVE EXPRESSION: Evolver.net hopes to launch a multimedia platform for all Evolvers to share videos and other professional multi-media projects produced by Evolver members. Additional funding allows Evolver.net to not only create our own user-generated network, but also market and promote it.

Scholarship program?
Ok... so we have a very eclectic group of individuals who are present on Evolver. I agree that the tiered membership just doesn't feel all that right to me. It makes me feel as if a caste system is being set up for this community, lol. I kid, of course.
That being said, I feel that with all of the diversity why couldn't we set the system up so that the people that have more monetary wealth may provide a larger sum of money, a love offering of sorts, which would be applied to anyone who could not provide with money to the cause?
I know the spirit of the people who frequent here. I truly feel that individuals would step up and provide for others.
We all have many beautiful gifts to bring to the table, I would hate to see someone go without just because they have chosen to live a very lite life.
Any thoughts?
The Gift of Giving, Indeed!
I love the Evolver project, and was so damned happy to be invited to help out at the HQ in NYC almost a year ago. Unfortunately, the pressure's of city living have eaten my time and I still wish to help in any way I can fit in.
Giving $5/month will actually make me feel better about contributing something to a community I want to be a part of and see blossom ever-further. Until the time comes when I can participate more, I'm more than happy to give $5/month.
I love the Scholarship program idea!

Its time to trust! and know that people will support. Accept the help the those that don't have the money. And believe and trust that those that do have the money will give like
We have arrived at that time of trusting and Believing!
easier way out?
the tiered membership does not sit right with me either...but giving as much as I can afford I would - however it should not exclude anyone at all.
I suggest Daniel et al to let us know how much money they would need to raise a year or a month in order to make the things happen Daniel has lined out, and keep Evolver going - is it USD 10,000 a month or 20,000? More or less? Give us the option to donate up to that amount (it seems to have worked for other issues as well - just think about the Wiki stuff, or I have experienced it with other causes - where the guys needing the support turned round and said what they needed and how much and the community chipped in to cover it - without leaving information on who put how much in, and without giving more access or background "treats" to those who did and leaving the others out).
If you claim you want to be a transparent organisation - start with telling us how much you need and we can then organise ourselves to ensure you get it - how about that?
Regards,
ck
Pay What You Can
Membership will be pay what you can ($5 is suggested, but not required), so it won't be very elitist -- in fact, quite the opposite. We will offer interesting services, like conference calls with the team to discuss movement strategy and to have Q&As with key figures in the consciousness scene as a thank you to those supporting and sustaining both Evolver and RS, as well as our regionals infrastructure.
If we don't pay tech bills and at least ensure people who work on this project 50-70 hours per week can pay their rent, there will be no Evolver. We're asking everyone to do their part (on whatever level they can) to make the movement happen. If you have absolutely no money, we can find ways for you to contribute time, but due to lack of resources, we don't have the human-power for those requests at the moment (it takes a lot of time to coordinate volunteers). I hope with this new initiative we will be able to do that in the near future. We appreciate all your help in making this happen.
Blessings,
Jonathan
National only?
Why so much US-centricity? Is Evolver going to transcend those kinds of boundaries and function more expansively than the limited scope of current sociopolicital layout? Isn't this a global movement? How can the international membership become a more inclusive part of Evolver?
To be clear, I don't recognize current sociopolitical designations as the primary identity of a person. There's a world of people who would love to be part of something like Evolver, but it sounds like the energy and focus would stay primarily rooted in the US once membership begins.
Global
Actually about 25% of RS visitors come from outside the U.S., Sean. We've always thought of this movement as global, and there are Evolver Regionals around the globe, as well -- Sidney, South Africa, Vienna, Canada... . So while we may launch the membership with a focus on the U.S., which is where we've got the most participation at the moment, the intention is to broaden quickly to be international. With enough membership support, we'll have the resources to make it happen -- since, as you say, there's definitely a lot of interest.
I understand
Thanks for the reply Ken. I'm 100% in support of this exploration, just checking in with it. Will there be other payment options - yearly/lifetime, for example? Spores are good...when the conditions are right, they'll sprout! When I have more time to offer, I'll let you know.
Flexible
We're still figuring out the details, Sean. But we want to keep it flexible. Still, if we offer a dozen different options, folks will find that confusing. Seems that most Evolvers like the idea of a monthly charge of some kind, so that'll be our priority. Then we'll see what else we can add.
Global Evolver
Hi Ken,
I joined the group UK Collective set up recently to create a place for UK Evolvers to share thoughts, information etc. It has been difficult to trace anyone by location. As our group is small it is not very evident on the group page. Can you trace members by location, and would I be able to do this in order to invite them into the group? The circumstances facing different countries have similariities, but also vary greatly. Whatever eventually gets off the ground in the UK would need to take into account movements such as Transition, and have a few extra golden spheres to add to their models. Also our British pounds increasingly buy less and less to the euro and the dollar, and contributions would reflect the exchange rate problem we are now facing. A form of alternative Evolver currency in the longer term would be more attractive and productive internationally, and make the most of all contributions without them being distorted by currency exchange. If you could suggest a way of connecting up on Evolver by region that would help those of us outside the US.
Search Evolvers By Location
We want to add a feature so you can search for other Evolvers by location. It's at the top of our list of to-dos, and will be one of the first things we do with the E+SM membership money.
The truth from my
The truth from my perspective on the otherside of the singularity is that the money issue becomes as nought once one becomes in the way so to speak.
To use a post-singularity analogy "we" are fond of over here...
"You don't stay afloat stepping on the heads of others, but learning how to swim...."
And with that I look forward to seeing more of you on this side of the shore, where the grass is green, and the sun doth shine (on good days).
reaching out
I hope this discussion isn't just about what each of us is prepared or not prepared to give. But also somewhere to explore ideas on building on the current membership and creating an attractive proposal for people who have never heard of Evolver.
Just put a contribution
Just put a contribution button out there and get it over with. Hire a clean accountant, keep it transparent. Unfortunately our reality is one that necesitates money for survival. The heating bill has to get paid regardless of the singularity.
membership is just an extra
The negativity on this blog is huge I think, and unnecessary. As daniel explained, Evolver.net needs money to stay alive and to accomplish more then it does now. So it's understandable he askes for money of the people who are already interested in this subjects. The people that comment above me in a positive way, doesn't seem to care about the membership. The seem passioned to bring Evolver.net to the next level.
And of course it's absolutely understandable that Evolver.net wants to give back to the ones who can afford to give a various amount of money to them.
So let's al focus on the evolvement of Evolver.net.
Peace!
I suspect that Jonathan and
I suspect that Jonathan and Daniel are NOT going to breeze away with our booty in their yacht beyond the sunset like pirating CEO's. If we think that, then what are we doing here? The "REALITY sandwich" of this is that we live here and now in this reality which functions on currency issued by the FED. Do we love this - not so much. But, here and now is what we are dealing with, not just some future fantasy. He's even saying it's optional. Again, I would steer away form calling it a membership (some more creative structures could exist here). Maybe something along the lines of a contributorship - that's goofy, but can't think of something right off hand. What's more, if this "money" can be transformed into something beautiful, all the better. Take a chance. Again, I have a sneaking suspicion that they won't abuse it. Buidling trust is so important. Let's see how it goes. But again, the need for transparency seems KEY! The internet is a great tool to set up voting buttons for contirbuting and non-contributing "members" to vote on how funds are used. Poor Jonathan should not have to go without food because we want to uphold a vague and stale "ideal" that money is BAD. Unless someone wants to take up a collection - which is completely inefficient. It's just paper and we attach to it what we will. Why not peace and love and evolution? Oh, and I live in Chicago where the city has created - FREE to the Public - a live music venue at the Pritzker Pavilion (surrounded by gardens, sculpture, art, food) - a virtual Eden really - an evolution. They have doners and memebers and contributors to support the functions. However, ALL people are welcome to enjoy the entertainment ALL the time. It's absolutely stunning and beautiful. The pavilion was funded by a gazillionaire, but the central theme is community, togetherness beauty. It's a glowing chakra in the middle of a money grubbing city and it's so amazing.
