Reiki
What is reiki? As far as I know, it’s more than a belief system. It is app parently hands on healing that becomes miracle us ly pass able through an energy attunement from a reiki “master” who has received the necessary attunements to be able to attune others. The history or reiki can be found here: http://usui-reiki.org/history_of_reiki.htm or here: http://www.reiki.com/history.html or any number of places on the interwebz, but I’m not interested in his story, I’m in interested in hours. The attunement is apparently necessary since one acts as a conduit for divine ki energy (the chi in tai chi and qi gong) to flow through them into another. The attunement opens the energy centers that make this channeling pass able. There are specific hand positions to follow when conducting healings, but the general idea is that no matter where your hands are placed, energy will flow to needed areas within the body. For example, my hands can be on your shoulder, yet you may feel energetic sensations in your heart or ankle.
I have been “attuned” to Level II at the cost of $500, and while I loved my experiences with my reiki master Zeljka and think she is one of the most amazingly powerful and beautiful people I have ever met, I can’t help but also feel that I may have been duped into spending 5 hundo and remain continuously duped in my daily practice.
As you can tell my lack of discipline with these Dews-day posts (it is Dews-day today, On Time yay: http://www.mtvu.com/music/video-premiere/the-disco-biscuits-on-time/), my daily reiki practice is not all that disciple needed, but I do find time to give myself some form of “reiki” everyday. All this entails is invoking/drawing specific symbols, usually on my hands, which are given w/ a level II degree as level I does not have any symbols, and placing my hands over my body through intuition and near where I have pain.
This hands on healing is app parently very subtle, and while I continue to use reiki due to very noticeable sensations during my “healings,” my external situation does not seem to have been healed in any way since I became attuned over two years ago. My shoulder is still nearly always painful, and as this was one of the primary reasons I initially decided to become attuned over two years ago, I am left to doubt reiki’s efficiency. My mental/emotional/spiritual outlook also has not really improved and may have even dissipated since I’m now more afraid of myself than ever, and also more cynical of others than ever. Reiki doesn’t seem to have helped, though I know there are an infinite # of factors that may have contributed to my changes, and perhaps reiki has kept things from becoming any worse.
I initially was very excited about reiki, and still perhaps feel that it, more than anything else, has the potent ill to heal the world, but I think the direction this healing must occur through is quite different than what other reiki practitioners may believe about the spread of this practice. I have talked to Zeljka and her husband Robert about finding grants for a reiki institute, and what I have in mind for this instant tune is no more than a grand experiment.
This experiment could and should result, in my mind, in one of three possible answers if done correctly. Research would have to properly examine the physiological responses to routine reiki experiments on injuries, through MRI’s + X-rays, etc., and also examine the psychological views one may have of reiki both before and after these healing experiments. Reiki is already offered in hospitals throughout the U.S., and is even offered as continuing education credits for nurses in California, yet there still remains such a large shadow over this puzzling practice. I have no idea why such an experiment hasn’t been done and reported yet, especially since this is already in hospitals officially, and if I am simply unaware of any, please point this out to me. Back to the experiment experience, the three results I see possibly arising are 1) reiki works and heals both physically and psychologically, 2) reiki doesn’t work at all or works randomly, or 3) reiki works for those who believe it will. This third result, which basically equates reiki to a placebo, is perhaps the most interesting and the one with the most potential for healing the world, especially if some real physical healing could take place simply through reiki + belief in reiki. I have heard numerous stories of miracle us healing through reiki, and though I have yet to see anything truly remarkable with my own eyes, I’ve certainly experienced enough strange sensations to know that something seems to be going on since this attunement.
We continuously agree here on Evolver that our thoughts influence the external world, and such a result from a large scale reiki experiment, if done scientifically and presented to the public with enough fanfare, could truly create the healing the world needs by helping everyone arrive at the re cognition that thoughts do indeed shape reality. Everyone hurts, and if everyone knew they could ease and heal their hurts simply through hands on healing and belief, then certainly interest would spread and we’d soon have a whole healthy harmonic population.
The best way I can ultimately explain reiki to those unfamiliar with it or skeptical of its healing powers is through the role of practitioner. The practitioner, who is supposed to do nothing other than act as a conduit for this divine ki energy to flow through them into the patient, merely serves as a witness to the patient’s own healing. This healing does not come through the touch, but rather through the patient’s own listening, since anyone who nose knows that all real healing is listening. The role of the reiki practitioner is then to provide a space for sacred listening and serve as a witness. I hope we witness the profound healing the earth and ourselves need before 2012, and I believe re key may be key. What are your experiences with reiki? Thoughts on reiki? I know our lead evolver Jonathon Phillips is a reiki master and I’d love to hear your thoughts on this subject Jonathon, as well as everyone of you. The public is growing increasingly curiouser and curiouser (“Cried Alice. She was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak good English.”) about chakras and reiki and energy healing, and since in my mind this stuff is specifically evolverses’ bag, I think it’s about time we had a serious discussion that can hopefully provide some sort of experiment or at least spark some debate and generate some interest, healing, and love. What do you say? Are you listening?

first experience
I had my first Reiki session a couple of weeks ago. A friend of mine just moved close to where I live and she is (not even sure how you refer to it)...basically a Reiki "healer"?
I did not have any expectations i.e. with regards to "healing" but as I had done some Matrix/2-point/energy flow seminars last year which provided me with insight into the flow of energies and more within myself and around you I was eager to experience Reiki just so I can feel the flow - if that makes any sense?
My friend found (and I could feel as well) two areas that need attention...my knees and my respiratory tract (at that time I had a bad cold)...I could feel the tension and her hands were shaking. But other than that i.e. whether anything healed I have not yet come to see and think could not be done within one session anyways.
With regards to healing I actually believe you need to believe as well - not in the practice of either Reiki or whatever but just that the mind can heal as well. Just as the mind can make you sick. I see this with my brother and his situation(s) - they have effects (i.e. stress levels) on his food intolerances going up and down - it is not only the body i.e. the physical thing that influences us but the psychological things as well. But that's just how I see it.
Coming back to the Reiki experience I so had - I felt the rush of energy (magnetic) throughout my body (however mainly through my temples and head) as well as seeing only a colour...indigo blue. My friend told me after we were done that it was the first time she saw a colour as well and that it was purple. I have no idea whether this means anything but it sure was a strong visual effect (I normally do not go visual i.e. seeing something is a big deal for me :)..).
I enjoyed it - be it only to find peace of mind (which I am not very disciplined at finding all on my own normally), relax and listen to my bodily experiences. As well as to enjoy the "connection" with my friend.
Do I need scientific proof whether Reiki works with regards to healing? NO! Do I believe it does heal? I leave the door open on that one - but do we need to explain things logically and obtain proof for all and everything?
cheers

I agree with CK - on the
I agree with CK - on the point that it all depends on what you believe. If you believe in the power of Reiki then it WILL work. It is dependent on perception.
Great summary and ideas
I'm a healer myself, and I have a Reiki education (second degree), but I use many methods.
I find this summary and your ideas great, and healing is surely something we should work on in this community. Love and devotion, all the way!
Namaste!
