IcerocketReligion is a very powerful tool where by the sheeple are told what to do, what to say, what to pray, what to think. Words that keep people in a box, told not to question, not to think outside that box, just have faith! People accept this because they like to fit in, feel welcomed as part of the flock, with Jesus (or Glen Beck) as their shepherd. When you are trapped in this box, it becomes very easy to blame free thinkers, or progressives, or liberals, or Muslims, or Jews, or any other group that doesn't think or look like you. You must demonize other groups to compensate your own shortcomings and inability to think outside the box that you constructed by your beliefs. This is the cause of conflict in our society and our world. The labeling, categorization, and name calling only demean yourself and become a shortcut to thinking about the real humanity of people. I pray that one day you will all open your hearts and your minds and realize that we are all one, realize that the conservative vs. liberal, the us vs. them, mindset is all fake and serves only the powers that be to keep us separate and divided.
You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one....

Long ago I read that Marx said "Religion is the opiate of the masses." At the time, I thought, damn what a jerk... I have come to realize this is true. Religion makes people go to sleep in a drug induced haze of fanciful stuff. As a result it is all distraction...

hello Dox, Let me offer another angle. You tie words together i.e. religion-sheeple-box (confining)-Jesus-Glenn Beck-trapped-demonized-shortcoming-labeling-demeaning. All these words are used to condemn religion (?Christianity?) Do progressives (marxists), muslims or liberals think outside the box or do they have their own agenda and bigotry. They are no different from the polyester preachers of televangelism because they all share the same level of consciousness. Religion is not bad in and of itself.. It's what men do to pervert it that's the problem. Catholics had their inquisition, the Muslims conquer and convert, the protestants live a superficial, cheapened spirituality with a capitalist twist. All of the major and minor religions have been diluted and betrayed. Do you think Jesus would even recognize modern Christianity? He said he doubted he would find real faith on the earth when he returned. Over and over again we are told throughout the New Testament to AWAKEN, to be born again into new level of consciousness. One reason I think shamanism is becoming more and more popular as an alternative to religion is it's honesty and practical methods that actually work for real internal change. Forget the myriad of modern religions of 'ordinary' man and seek what is real. The old is rapidly dying, let it. In the new paradigm there will be no progressives or liberals and conservatives or Christians or Muslims or whatever. Theoretically, all will be renewed. And if we have elevated our consciousness to the approprIate level, then we will SEE and can continue our journey. What a wonderful mystery is our play here on earth.

Hi Dox, I've been puzzling this for some decades now and I think I'm getting close. I totally agree with Alex. We need to rise beyond the duelistic arguments that bind us to separation(half) and realize the resonance of the larger "pond"(whole). If "religion" is used to separate it is broken, and broken tools suck.
I looked up the word religion in the dictionary to see if their might be something there I haven't taken into consideration on the issue before. To my satisfaction I noticed the next word on the page...relight. To reignite ones connection to the divine requires no human intermediary or manmade structure. So, to me, religion is the personal connection to source via spirit which is in essence a transpersonal or mystical experience not viewed favorably by the "broken tools" that are dangerous and costly in many ways.
However...these broken tools ARE a part of our world. How we recognise them and attempt to heal them just may be our greatest mission.
