Why with hold information?

Humanity as a species has moved along and made amazing technological advancements. However I believe we are going at a slow pace compared to the possibilities. The internet could be used as a worldwide hub of information, I mean that is what it is. But in north america you still have to pay for knowledge, think of how much quicker technology could progress if everyone had access to a database of different schematics.
The most brilliant minds in the world could work together, rather than working against each other. Here is an example: Car companies. Ill use Mazda as an example, they have a rotary motor, no one else does, no one else is allowed to use this idea to advanced their own product. This way of doing things is due to capitalism, I have something different, possibly better. So buy my cars instead of my competitors. Now suppose instead of having this mentality the information was shared with other companies and they had a choice of whether to use the idea, try to make the process even more efficient while using the idea, or decided not to use the idea. Now say Honda makes a few adjustments to the idea and it works a little better than the original made by Mazda. Honda then shares the idea out with their competitors. In the end the competition would not be required, the greatest minds on the earth in any given topic would collaborate their idea's and work together to make the best technology we have ever seen!
Now imagine if it was not only the auto companies that shared all information willingly, The human species decides to share all information and techniques on how to manufacture things, using an idea that may not be related but may very well be relevant in regards to designing something entirely new that no one has ever thought of before, Becomes more probable. This system would not work in the current system of capitalism. Due to laws on intellectual property, patents, and using idea's to make a living. However when you have a community based system such as in my previous blog on Greenhouses. Where your immediate needs are covered, working with the people around you allows you to live a happy well balanced life. Thus working with other people to create technologies that are readily available and affordable for everyone.
If it were made illegal by the people to purchase companies with opposing views and with hold the patents of green technologies from the world. Like electric cars, Hydrogen fuel cells, that can operate current vehicles as a replacement to gasoline or diesel. The world would be a much better place, the world have the capacity to be greener. Our emissions would cut down drastically. The earth would start to replenish itself.
Think of if we are no longer using a system where money rules over everything we do, what do you do if you want something? well thats simple, we will still have manufacturing facilities in place for such items. If you want something you have to work for it. So you goto a facility that creates that item and get taught how to make your own. Think of if everyone who owned a car had gone through the entire creation process. They would understand a lot more about the machine and be more capable to troubleshoot anything that went wrong. You understand and respect where your car came from. You also have the options of inputting your idea's into the creation process of that item. You may think something would work better if done differently. Many minds have many idea's, This would definitely make a lot of people live more to their potential. Not being held back by social status.

Because of competitors
"think of how much quicker technology could progress if everyone had access to a database of different schematics."
We do not all agree on many things. We do not live in an imaginary utopia where everyone gets along or share things well. These societies have been tried but to date have always failed. The most recent one and the largest was the Soviet Union. To share information might give ones enemies or business competitors an advantage that might cost those that freely give away their information dearly. It's about trust and frankly some can't be trusted.
Tell the communist in Russia that if you would.
As we speak the Chinese progress toward a more capitalistic system. Sorry the idealism sounds good but to date does not work. Socialism is as close to succeeding these notions have gotten and wishful thinking will not change it.
