I got inspired by a performance this week in California by Anna Joy Springer. Pure punk/DIY/healing/audience participation. So, here's what I thought would be a cool response to her work.

I am going to teach a class at San Diego State University (California/USA) in the Fall of 2010 It's called Theory from the Street. It's required for grad students in English, but anyone reading this can buy the books and e-mail me about your thoughts on the readings. I'll share your comments with the students. You can also direct me to your youtube performances or send CDs: Emily Hicks, 1341 31st St., San Diego, CA 92102.

I was told recently that I could never teach philosophy to "the kind of people in this neighborhood" (my neighborhood). I live in a mixed ethnic ex-ghetto working class diverse neighborhood near downtown (Golden Hill). So, I'm going to show the person who said that that we can all learn philosophy from each other, at raves, cafes, sitting in dorm rooms, waiting at bus or metro stops and standing in line. Anywhere.

I will incorporate what you send into the curriculum. I can e-mail lecture notes. I also teach in Chicana/o Studies.

Send Stuff for a Show

You can include your "submission"--as accepted already if you want to add it to your CV/resume. The show will be a Fluxus-inspired exhibition September 1-December 31, 2010, Singularity Gallery, Border institute for Advanced Studies in Nonlinear Events and Structures, San Diego State University, 5500 Campanile Drive. Nothing will be "peer-reviewed." No curators. You send it. Up it goes on the wall (if it is a Xerox), or on stands/tables (if it is a 'zine/CD, etc.). The title of the show: Complexity Fluxus Exhibition. Mail art, music, whatever, in any format (vinyl would be cool:)). There will be one lap top and one screen. I will promote it through local, nat'l and international channels. You can too! Deadline: August 15, 2010. Nothing returned so make it a copy (not an original). I will write about the show (somewhere--I am a writer). I may be able to get others to write about it. I will post photos of the opening. I'll ask Anna Joy Springer if she'll submit something.

Here's the book/reading list:

DJ Spooky
The Vanuata Pacifica Foundation web site
Rivkin & Ryan, Literary Theory
DeLanda, Intensive Science and Virtual Philosophy

This might be of interest to anyone thinking about applying to grad school--to give you a crash course in what's up with how theory overlaps with the rest of what you are doing (if you are a musician/artist/filmmaker/poet/spoken word poet/performance artist/etc).

DIY--all age--no questions are "bad" questions--and I might not be able to answer them anyway.

Also, check out lectures on European Graduate School web site.
