the individual vs. the collective

I have been thinking about the words community, communal, communism, without the baggage of history. I may be stating the obvious here, but what's happened in the past 20 years is that capitalism has taken over the world. We have been brainwashed by the corporatocracy to believe that 'life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness' can only be achieved by individual gain. To be successful means to be independent with the power to acquire whatever we want. An overabundance of commodities have been produced to keep feeding that idea of success. Now here we are, alone, with all of our things. Education under capitalism has taught us that more is better, to be good at something you have to go to extremes, do it all the time, maintain linear focus. To strive for balance is undesirable, an impediment to the idea of progress or becoming the best. Western capitalism has demonized the concept of communalism because the sharing of resources undermines its fundamental premise: to each his own.

I sometimes imagine myself as an 'alien' watching the human race race towards its annihilation. Modern humans are now able to see how we have developed as a species. Not all of us, but many Americans have increased in body size, have multiple mental and physical disorders, and our children suffer more developmental problems. Contemporary life in this capitalist society is making us ill and we need to disengage to become whole again. If you are reading and writing here, you are the beneficiary of the rewards of our way of life, yet we know that it's an approaching dead-end, or we wouldn't be here. Do we have to implode before we can start over? Is our destiny to be witnesses of the end?

Someone here mentioned that the creators of evolver were writers who took drugs and wanted to become famous. Isn't that what we've all been sold as the alternative to a boring enslaved existence, to become rock stars? We have appeased ourselves by living through our "stars" whether they be entertainers, writers or artists. Capitalism is constantly moving, appropriating, consuming, turning creativity and innovation into money. Let's become entrepreneurs of a new way of thinking. A good idea doesn't have to be hoarded and exploited. It can be gifted, put to use for the common good. Let's change ourselves so we can change our lives.

Read This Book!

After reading your post, I thought I'd mention a book I just started reading which fits almost too perfectly with this topic. The book is called Hooked! Buddhist Writings on Greed, Desire, and the Urge to Consume edited by Stephanie Kaza. It features 17 essays that each, to some extent, deal with this "hooked" feeling; when we give in to an all consuming desire for a certain material object, and after you get this item of your desire, your left feeling empty, and basically wanting some other object to fulfill this emptiness, and so on ad infinitum. It also deals with how this hooked feeling has gotten us to the point that we are currently at in the world, economically and environmentally. I've only read the first two essays, but so far its been a fantastic and insightful read and something that I highly recommend
All the best,

hooked

I like this book already, will certainly look for it, thanks.

I definitely agree!! I'm

I definitely agree!! I'm glad so many people on Evolver are along the same lines of thinking! If you look at how capitalism is progressing you can see stuff like the euro, Amero and other things coming into play. An interesting thing someone else brought up in one of they're blogs was, when your stuck on a homework problem or something you always look to your parents or someone for help instead of generating your own ideas and answers, I'm only 18 so it wasn't that long ago I was in school still and your right schools really do just teach you how to be a working component within our system.

The brainwashing started much more than 20 years ago...

I think the brainwashing started much more than 20 years ago, and has much more to do with the problem of an ancient idea of humanity that ideas are hierarchical in their "value" = some are better than others. We have often been lead by a "head/-s of the tribe" who decided the world view, and if this head/view was insulted, we all were insulted. According to my opinion, this is a much bigger problem than any monetary system we can invent as long as our consciousness does not evolve to a point where we understand that ideas are not hierarchical. Basically, I think the problems in the monetary system is just mirroring this problem.

I also think that the creators of Evolver wrote their books, made films etc because they want to inspire a healthy evolution of our society. Maybe they have hero or rock star -complexes, who knows, I do not know them personally - but whatever. What they have done with it is still great, and I am quite convinced that they are working on themselves, as do so many of us.

Besides from that, I am basically agreeing with you =)

So what do you suggest we do here on Evolver to get more practical about stuff?

Here a link to a post from June in which the admins explain what functions they aim to add to this community page:

Do you see anything missing? I will think about it as well, and we could have an exchange =)

I really liked the initiative you made with you last post, and I am very much pro getting active and that we should maybe share more of our practical experiences of our daily lives and experiences in living "of the grid", helping in your community, etc, etc. There has been some such posts, but there could be more. I have to admit that I myself have not written any such post yet, but I'll get around to it =)

With love!

getting active

Yes Susan, becoming more active is the hard work ahead of us if we are to manifest our dreams for a better world. I have been quietly working in my own community, but am frustrated by the shield of denial most around me maintain. Most people are just scrambling to make ends meet, pay their mortgages/rents and put up a good front. These are wonderful folks who volunteer their time, care for others, are generous, recycle, work hard and play hard. They are artists, musicians, educators, social workers, tradespeople and parents who are aware of the precarious state our world is in, but continue to live their lives as they always have. They are not on this site. I see a disconnect between the 'boots on the ground' and the cyber community here. I am at the point where I want to be part of a group or community that is actively creating a new way of living, aligned with the earth, working towards self-sufficiency.

I do believe what the creators of RS and evolver have done is enormously important and influential. I was simply making a point about how we vicariously live through our "stars", whether they be rock musicians or new age gurus. We create fantasy worlds that we inhabit to get us through the daily realities, and I believe this is what is holding us back from taking action.
